Since I've never opened a thread here and people tell me I'm lucky all the time, I'm hoping this supposed luck* rubs off on our Gillou with me opening this thread. :p

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Allez Gilles!!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

*Supposed, because I believe that (for a big part) people can create their own luck. And this applies to most of the reasons why people call me lucky. :)

Not that I'm a "Positive Thinking" advocate or anything, but I do believes it works. :)

If we all think that Gilles will do well in IW, maybe he will :D ;). Allez!

He has entered the Challenger of Sunrise between IW and Miami too. He will probably pull out in last minute like 85% of the entry list, but he's on the list.

He should be seeded 16 here, hope that helps to give him a good draw. Good luck Gilles.

As good a draw as he could hope for. Wonder if Ljubo's still mentally scarred after Paris

03-09-2010, 11:05 PM
I don't quite know what could be consider a good draw for him these days, but I do know what a bad draw would look like :p, and this one isn't that bad, so it's all good then .

He only needs to win one match to defend his pts here, so it's certainly doable ;)

Michael.
03-10-2010, 12:02 AM
That's actually a pretty good draw!

Thanks Lesly for the time of the draw, i am just arriving a bit late now :p

Hum Gael and Gilles in double, can someone take pictures?
I might go to Madrid, hope they will get this idea a second time ;)

And they are preparing the new team of the DC

lalaland
03-12-2010, 01:14 AM
His first opponent is going to be Brian Dabul, the Argi qualifier, who just beat Leo Mayer. tbh, I hate my player has to face qualifier who's in a roll winning like 3 matches already. Good luck Gilles, hope he's getting himself match tough kind of 100% to prepare for this tournament.

sammy01
03-12-2010, 03:21 AM
awwwwwwwwwww simon is playing doubles with his boyfriend best friend tomorrow!

lalaland
03-12-2010, 04:49 AM
Their double is scheduled on the main court, probably thanks to Gael ;). Too bad there's no tv coverage tomorrow. I hope Alli has ticket for center court.

Truc
03-12-2010, 01:18 PM
I don't like qualifiers either.
I don't think I've ever seen Dabul play, I don't know his game at all. Even though he's a claycourter, he hasn't a bad record at all on hardcourt, almost twice as many wins as defeats if his profile is correct and 9-1 on this surface in 2010 (he won a Challenger in January).

sammy01
03-12-2010, 10:19 PM
i hope simon wins his doubes match, i need something to smile about.

good look sexy simon.

lalaland
03-13-2010, 02:25 AM
I scoreboard watched the match, a very boring thing to do I must say. So I did play by play to make it interesting:

Gael served first, got broken. 0-1. Gilles opened his serve game with a DF, but he held on without much trouble, 1-2. Montanes DF at bp to give the game back, 2-2. Gael serves again, he's down 2 bps, saved 2nd bp with an Ace, rallied back to hold serve, 3-2. David held, 3-3. Gilles serves, down 0-30 with his 2nd DF, down 2 bps, saved 1 bp but got broken anyway, 3-4. Montanes held, 3-5. Gael held to stay in the set, 4-5. David held again, so far he’s the only one that hasn’t been broken. Ferrer/Montanes took set 1 6-4 in 32 mins.

Gilles held serve to start set 2, an Ace to finish that game, 1-0. Montanes also held at 15, 1-1. Gael served, broken at 15, down 1-2 for the Frenchies. David held firm his serve again, Frenchies down 1-3. Gilles serves, broken at love. Frenchies down 1-4. Montanes held, Frenchies down 1-5. Gael serving to stay in match, serve his first DF but Ace a 2nd serve to hold, still down 2-5. David, who hasn’t been broken yet in the entire match, serves for the match. He held.

Spaniards beat Frenchies 6-4, 6-2 in just under an hour.

Well, that was quick. Hope they at least have a fun time on court.

Gilles' single match is scheduled on Stadium 3, first match tomorrow, start time 11am. Good luck Gillou.

It is impossible to pay, i tried with different cards and failed each time :(

It is easier to get streaming so almost being illegal  than subscribe to the official channel :o

Hope i can have access before tonight and can enjoy gillou playing... It is good he is playing first, i do not need to get up in the middle of the night ;)

Well, that's what I like about (three of the) musketeers. They don't go by the french saying "the important thing is to participate" ... which is a sucky saying for top sportsmen.

I think it's good for them to feel it's never enough. They should always be willing to win, like Federer, the Williamses and so on.. Even for training matches !! it has to be their way !! :D

Cloudygirl
03-13-2010, 09:08 PM
Gilles is playing like he is barely top 200.

I think he needs lots of practice to get his movement sorted again. He's def a step slower and he needs the movement because he hits so flat he has little margin for error.

MsTree
03-13-2010, 09:12 PM
It's really good to see Mario Ancic playing again too.

Gilles will pick it up, he's just not quite there yet.

Three tournaments and yet to win a set, the morale is very low: "I'm reaching saturation point. Nothing is working. And the worst thing is that I don't see how it would work. Everybody is asking me how my knee feels. You know what? Yes, my knee is fine, but that's the only part of my body which isn't hurting. My back seized up 3 days ago. Impossible to work on my serve normally." It was obvious yesterday against Dabul (44% 1st serves). He even won more points on his 2nd serve than on his 1st serve. But let's go on with the medical examination. "My feet are in blood and my hands not far from it. Blisters, blisters everywhere!... Oh, I forgot! This morning my abs were hurting like hell. My body is a big mess because it isn't used to the effort anymore."
But there's more than that. Simon isn't back to the real Simon yet in the game. His groundstrokes have no fluidity, not even his backhand which is his more natural shot, and his tactical management of yesterday's match was random.
Tulasne says that Gilles was playing at a level which allowed a consistent player like Dabul to play his game. Gilles gives his best, but he's tight on all the big points (he had 5 break points, or rather rebreak points, but he didn't take any). "Yes, there's a lot of work to do, but it's normal after an injury. He needs to be in a match situation to 'unjam'/get things moving again." So the Sunrise Challenger can already book two rooms for Gasquet and Simon.

It's the same, but he explains for example that he couldn't hit a cross FH because of his abs (or his back?), which doesn't make things easier against a leftie.
And it confirms he will play Sunrise even though he keeps complaining that his body is aching all over: "All those little pains will go away at some point..."

JMG says that Sunrise will be on bwin.

I find a bit odd that he's talking about reaching "a saturation point". I hope he said that in the grip of the disappointment.
He knows that his comeback in Marseille and Dubai was ridiculously premature, not even able to practice twice a day, aching all over after each practice session - any other player would have skipped those 2 tournaments. It appears he's still not really in shape to play, of course it's frustrating, but it is a bit early to lose his patience already.
I'm fine with him wanting to play tournaments and to test himself on the tour rather than training in Paris, but he has to put things into perspective then.

He should rewatch the matches of his boyfriend when he came back from his long injury break at the beginning of 2008 - boy that match in Dubai, he was looking like a complete beginner out there, I don't think I've ever seen a pro play so poorly... He started to play better in Miami and a few months later he was in the Roland SF, it's really not unusual to take a couple of months.

My example was not very good, maybe he also says "saturation point" as "this is more than my body can cope with" and not with reference to the time it takes to get back in form. But he does sound pretty impatient anyway in the few statements I read. Too impatient.

Thanks Fran, for the news.

I’m glad that Gilles whined about all these, so we at least know what is his problem, which is still mostly physical at this point. On the other hand, he doesn’t have the right to whine then, since he’s the one who’s insisted on coming back way sooner than he should, the consequence is that he has to now suffer even more physically, he's paying for his choice, so he better just suck it up.

Anyway, I’m thinking maybe he overtrained in the past few weeks, pushing his body past the limit in hope of catching up for lost time. It doesn’t work that way obviously, and the body is breaking down. He should listen to his body and stop the “refusing to be injured” nonsense. And that’s really unfortunate if he is now feeling the pressure of not being able to win a match, or even a set. There’s yet another lesson to learn.

Having said all that, wish I can give him a hug though, it’s hard for him. But I have to believe that he has always been able to work his way out of dire situations before, so he will find his way again, eventually, I hope.

I mean, he's been hitting those ridiculous UEs that missed the line by a mile in the previous 2 matches (don't know about the IW match since I still haven't get the heart to see that Dabul match yet). He hit rather clean today and also did pretty well at the net.

Simon Beats Gasquet in All-French Opener

In first-round action at the BMW Tennis Championship, Gilles Simon (FRA) played near perfect tennis to beat countryman Richard Gasquet (FRA) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Simon's victory marked the first time that he has beaten Gasquet in five career head-to-head meetings.

Simon broke Gasquet’s serve in the third game of the first set, and this one break was all Simon needed as he took the set, 6-4.

In the second set, Gasquet, playing in his first BMW Tennis Championship, broke Simon and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Simon dug in to hold his serve in the fourth game while breaking Gasquet twice to even the score at 3-3. Throughout the match, the two Frenchmen played nearly flawlessly, making few unforced errors, instead forcing the other to earn each point by brilliant play. Simon broke Gasquet once more in the seventh game and held on to win the second set, 6-4, and take the match.

Gasquet’s game is so technically complete, he’s been called the “Baby Federer.” But Simon matched his opponent in technical perfection, giving up few cheap points and capturing the match with balletic overhead smashes, exquisitely placed down-the-line groundstrokes and sharp putaway volleys.

The second-seeded Simon, who is making his third appearance in the tournament, advances to the second round, where he will meet Potito Starace (ITA). Starace defeated Harel Levy (ISR) 6-2, 6-3.

In the second set, Gasquet, playing in his first BMW Tennis Championship, broke Simon and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Simon dug in to hold his serve in the fourth game while breaking Gasquet twice to even the score at 3-3.

Just noticed this as well - 3-0, Gillou held serve to make it 3-1 and then broke Richie TWICE to go 3-3 :haha:

When it comes to Richard my rose tinted glasses are always firmly on but it was too much even for me

:D

maybe they were completely mesmerised by Gilles's eyes and lost track of the match. That is the only other possibility.

I wish I had rose tinted glasses about anything. I'm a realist to the point of pessimist I think

:haha: they do look flawless though

There's a video, with Gilles' on court interview on it:

lalaland

He is a sweetheart. He can't even give a smile for his first win, maybe because it's a friend he just beat, or it's just R1 in a challenger, or he wasn't happy with his game... He has bigger smile when he lost to his friends. (but then, he almost cry when he beat Gael last year :p, no wonder he always lost to his fellow Frenchies :p)

Oh, btw, I read it on MiamiHerald, they thought Simon vs Gasquet was such a big deal that even a French TV station is in Sunrise. Well, it's Canal, so I think that's the Les 4 Mousquetaires' crews. I'm beginning to think that they have cancel the tv series without telling us since most of them (besides Jo) are doing so badly these years. But maybe it's still on, just they were maybe waiting for sth interesting to happen before they finish taping the first epi, hope so anyway.

Even you would have to give Tutu the benefit of knowing that a player doesn't serve two games in a row :p

4-3 1st set, adv Starace and they've stopped, Gillou's got the trainer out to have a look at his right knee :(

I know :tape:

Still, he's back on, I thought he would have to forfeit that game as he had to stop play? But they played the last point anyway, 4-4

Lots of swearing and shouting in French. Racket throwing too

No, they're allowed to get a medical time-out in the middle of a game if the physio agrees it requires an immediate medical treatment.

lalaland

Well, he was playing decently before he called the trainer, and he wasn't even in a losing position then. Why is he suddenly going thru the motion now after the trainer? If he's not hurt, then he needs to start playing like he means it. Cos again, he's playing here to get some match practices, at least make it worthwhile.

He was prone to that instability since the start of his slump last year, before he was injured. That's where I think he kind of regressed majorly compared to 2008, his inability to control his mood and conduct consistently a gameplan throughout a match without one or two berserk episodes.

I started following him at RG last year, he got injured there. I just thought it's a norm that he went crazy every other match (and every match in Cincy last year). I must say, besides that match against Ferrero in Wimby when he seemingly just lost the plot and then was going thru the motion after that, I haven't seen this Gilles much. I'm more used to him just screamed and yelled between pts and back in it once the ball is in place. So Idk, this is not what I'm used to see him. But anyhow, I'm fed up trying to understand. This whole injury ordeal, then every decision he made after seems to defy logic, didn't he study logic when he was a teenager? I'm not frustrated by his losses, I'm frustrated bcos I don't understand him.

I asked the guy of Sunrise if he has heard anything about Gilles' knee and he answered:
"He hasn't said anything about it, he seemed ok this morning as he walked in."

I saw Hajek's first round against Seb and I was not impressed. I'm surprised he beat Lacko who seemed to play well lately. (I'm a bit disappointed, I was already  at the prospect of a Lacko-Simon match - even if we can't see much with the livestream.)
