Tess Gray

We don't have a thread for this yet?

anyhoooo, he'll be playing Marseille first.

In fact, he's on court right now against Josselin Ouanna! :) Livestream can be found on bet365.com. Is there anybody here watching the match?

15 feb: Open 13 - Marseille, France (SF)

22 feb: Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships - Dubai, UAE (2nd RND)

5 March: Davis Cup (through to QF)

11 March: BNP Paribas Open - Indian Wells, USA (QF)

24 March: Sony Ericsson Open - Miami, USA

02-17-2010, 05:07 PM
I'm now :D

02-17-2010, 05:13 PM
Good! ;) Very few people on here lately, unfortunately.

02-17-2010, 05:18 PM
Quite time after a slam, probably. Not much happening, plus I always need some time to catch up with sleep ;)

Jo looks good, both tennis-wise and with the new short hair

Tess Gray
02-17-2010, 05:23 PM
(wasn't blaming anyone, in case it came across that way:lol:) Yeah probably, i personally think this period and the one after wimbly are the most boring out of the tennis season. :o

Yep looking pretty good! Was a nasty fall there, a little while ago, but he looks ok.

Tess Gray
02-17-2010, 05:40 PM
Oh goodie a TB  I just loooove those.

02-17-2010, 05:45 PM
I am just starting to watch and I am :o at the tiebreak.

Tess Gray
02-17-2010, 05:49 PM
omg he hit that smash out! Very sloppy Jo! SP for Ouanna now.

02-17-2010, 05:49 PM
Oh man, that really should not be a replayed point. He returned it and no way was Ouana getting to it.

Lot of sloppy play from Jo, but still in the breaker

02-17-2010, 05:50 PM
eww at that smash
but ace to recover. balance restored in universe.

Tess Gray
02-17-2010, 05:54 PM
I just saw that Jo has a bit of blood on his knee, probably still from that fall.

Ouanna is playing very well! :o

02-17-2010, 05:56 PM
There's an SP and serve :bounce:

BTW, what's up with Marseille scoreboard, it's still stuck on a Monday match

Tess Gray
02-17-2010, 05:57 PM
FINALLY! :bounce: :D

02-17-2010, 05:59 PM
clutched the first set! I hope he steps it up for the second.

Tess Gray
02-17-2010, 06:12 PM
Already a break in the second:yeah:

Tess Gray
02-17-2010, 06:13 PM
Fall #2, starting to look like Gael there :p

02-17-2010, 06:24 PM
allez jo!

02-17-2010, 06:30 PM
Nice MP, congrats Jojo :yeah:

Tess Gray
02-17-2010, 06:30 PM
:woohoo: Nice job Jo!:) Ouanna played pretty well, but still expected win for Jo-Willy:D

02-17-2010, 06:33 PM
good he won in straights
Youzhny pulled out of Marseille b/c he was injured in Rotterdam final. He is replaced by Recouderc. I heard that just now on livestream

Tess Gray
02-17-2010, 06:45 PM
Yeah I heard so:lol: I'm sure that whoever was going to play Misha is very relieved that he is now playing Recourderc :p

02-17-2010, 07:10 PM
Young Rufin is playing him I think :)

02-18-2010, 07:19 AM
Finally some tennis action! Good to see Jo back with a win, and hopefully fully recovered.

Marseille is wide open, good opportunity to defend his title.

02-19-2010, 02:32 PM
Nice start, up a break early on :rocker:

02-19-2010, 04:01 PM
6:3 6:4, not without some to troubles. Either Benny or Monfils in semi.

Allez Jo, take that trophy :rocker2:

02-19-2010, 04:11 PM
:yeah: allez jo defend your title.

02-19-2010, 05:19 PM
Awful performance today I thought, but at least he got the job done in straights.

Tess Gray
02-20-2010, 09:07 AM
Jo will play Julien at 2PM CET. Allez!:)

02-20-2010, 01:24 PM
Jo hadn't faced a break point till then, and out of nowhere plays a bizarre service game at 5-4, gets broken right back. Julien played a nice point to go up a mini-break but double-faulted at 5-3. Jo Had set point on his serve at 9-8, flubbed a volley, and another wild forehand at 11-all. Julien serves it out to take the 1st set TB 13-11.

And Jo gets broken to love in the 1st game of the 2nd set. I have lost count of the number of times Jo has flubbed a 1st TB and lost his first service game in the 2nd set.

02-20-2010, 01:45 PM
did julien play out of his mind like he did against federer when he beat him? or is jo not so hot today? I just started watching.

02-20-2010, 02:54 PM
did julien play out of his mind like he did against federer when he beat him? or is jo not so hot today? I just started watching.

Jo's playing poorly again, Julien is playing pretty well.

Looks like Julien is going to take it in the tb.

02-20-2010, 03:16 PM
Julien was serving for the match at 5-4 in the 2nd set and completely threw that game and the set away. 3rd set was pretty even. Jo had a ton of bps and half chances, but couldn't do much with them. Julien was too strong in the TB. Great win for him.

I could sorta may be possibly cut Jo some slack cos he hasn't played in 3 weeks. But the first 1.5 sets have really pissed me off. Was really hoping Jo would finally defend a title here. Oh, well.

02-20-2010, 03:32 PM
I didn't really watch it but still very disappointed. :ras: I believe Julien and Jo will meet again next week in Dubai first round. Jo will win then.

02-20-2010, 08:09 PM

02-21-2010, 02:44 PM
I didn't really watch it but still very disappointed. :ras: I believe Julien and Jo will meet again next week in Dubai first round. Jo will win then.

sooo... I don't know what I was smoking when I posted this, Jo will not play Benneteau in Dubai R1; he will play Llodra, the new Marseille title winner.

02-21-2010, 03:10 PM
Any news about Jo's health? I saw Truc posted earlier today in the Dubai main draw thread, he might not play due to illness

02-21-2010, 03:14 PM
Any news about Jo's health? I saw Truc posted earlier today in the Dubai main draw thread, he might not play due to illness

:o I don't know anything about no illness but will look it up now.

02-21-2010, 03:23 PM
:D His comments after his defeat in Marseille:

He says that if it were a 5-set match, he would most likely win. For a guy with such a long list of 5-setters to his name, he can't seem to get enough of them.

02-21-2010, 03:32 PM
Well, Jo is not certain to play Dubai, he got a stomach bug Saturday night. He's not due to play on Monday so he still has some time to get better. but in my experience it takes at least 3 days to completely recover and go back to eating regular food when you get that stuff. with the flight and all I'd say his chances are slim.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga est également incertain. Touché par une gastro-entérite dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche, le Tricolore a reporté son départ aux Emirats arabes unis où il doit jouer contre Michaël Llodra.

02-21-2010, 03:37 PM
Thanks :yeah: Hope he gets better soon

I like the attitude if it went to five, even though it's funny given he was a 5th set virgin until recently

02-23-2010, 03:07 PM
:bounce: Takes the first set in TB, after Mika was up a mini break twice. Allez!!

02-24-2010, 05:04 PM
Dubai R2 vs Ljubicic is on right now and there is a stream.
Who do you root for oranges :D? (if you're around)

02-24-2010, 05:17 PM
Jojo :D I've never been a real fan of Ljubo, he likes ot play that passive game all to often for my taste, though he has my :worship: :worship: :worship: for that unbelievable 2005 DC season alone

Jo in a bit of trouble there 15:30

02-24-2010, 05:27 PM
Jojo :D I've never been a real fan of Ljubo, he likes ot play that passive game all to often for my taste, though he has my :worship: :worship: :worship: for that unbelievable 2005 DC season alone

Jo in a bit of trouble there 15:30

:yeah: I like Ljubo, nice backhand and seems like a genuinely nice guy. Jo seems to have recovered fine. a bit boring match so far, especially after watching the end of Murray-Tips.

02-24-2010, 05:46 PM
Jo's BH is getting better and better :yeah:

What a sloppy volley there :o
If they continue serving at 70%, this could be all TBs

02-24-2010, 05:50 PM
I'm glad he didn't get broken. so many tbs for jo.

02-24-2010, 05:52 PM
eww now he did.

02-24-2010, 05:52 PM
 Lame way to lose a set Jo.

02-24-2010, 06:23 PM
yes, lame way to lose the match as well. glad it's over now. he probably did not recover completely from the illness.

02-24-2010, 06:36 PM
Meh, I couldn't see the second set. Hope he gets in the mood by the time of IW and Miami

02-25-2010, 04:07 AM
Just caught a replay. Same old, same old. Ljubicic was barely moving, could have won by pushing him around. Jo did look a bit winded, like he really didn't want to be here. So why bother asking for a wild card? Whatever Jo, get better or something.

Tess Gray
02-25-2010, 12:26 PM
Maybe it's a good thing I didn't see the match, judging from your reports :o He really needs to step it up, big time.

03-05-2010, 04:44 PM
:o Jo dropped a set to Benjamin Becker :ras:

03-05-2010, 05:19 PM
:o Jo dropped a set to Benjamin Becker :ras:

 I watched just the first two sets, he was terribly streaky, from excellent to all over the place and back. Hope he gets more inform for IW and Miami.

BTW, the jumping smash towards the end of the 2nd set, Sampras would be envious :worship: Jumped somewhere around the service line and ended close to the net. Play of the month, at least

03-05-2010, 05:29 PM
I didn't see that smash but I saw another one in the 4th, I guess he was just trying to make up for that dropped set and make me feel better  I was flipping around a lot. Croatia's looking good :yeah:, although I am a bit sad for Nicolas Lapentti because I love him :)

03-05-2010, 05:30 PM
I was like burning in a hell during his last two sets... :(
Jo please!!!! Don't play with as this way! I was about having a heart attack!

03-05-2010, 06:25 PM
May be he's not physically a 100% yet. The 4th set was a lot better.

75 winners 67 ufes
Becker had his fair share too.

03-07-2010, 12:00 PM
How come Jo's playing a dead rubber?

03-07-2010, 12:18 PM
No idea why it wasn't Llodra.

Was anybody watching, did it look bad when he twisted his ankle?
lequipe.fr says it's just precautionary to not jeopardize his chances in IW.

03-07-2010, 12:24 PM
Who did watch it??? What have happened to Jo????? :scared:

03-07-2010, 12:47 PM
I saw the ankle twist on live stream. he was changing directions at the last minute to get to a backhand but instead slipped and fell on his side. It did not "look" like a bad fall -nothing like Sabine Lisicki- but he did stay down a bit. Forget was so worried and ran right away along with the pretty lady umpire (director??) whose name I can't recall now.

I don't know why Jo was playing the dead rubber but I am assuming Monfils and Llodra are a bit fragile and they did not want to risk any injuries before IW. That's why Bennet and Jo had to play. But this is my assumption. Jo is not so hot when it comes to injuries/health himself. (eg: back, knee, stomach and now the good old ankle)

He did hang around barefoot after the trainer had a look at it. He left the court walking, he had a barely noticeable limp. Monfils carried his bag. :yeah: some serious luxury hired help :)

Anyways, I cross my fingers this was just a precaution. I did not see any of the first set but he sucked in the second set. I mean, it was a dead rubber and I understand if he did not give 100% but this game he put on in the second set better be his 10% because it was not working at all.

I hope he gets better soon.

03-07-2010, 01:29 PM
No, I watched a couple of games when I realized from live score that he's playing, but couldn't watch the entire match. Twisted ankle? :scared:

03-09-2010, 01:08 PM
Will he play IW ??

Tess Gray
03-09-2010, 01:35 PM
As far as I know he will :)

03-10-2010, 04:33 AM
Bad draw.

03-10-2010, 10:00 AM
Hard luck meeting Llodra (most likely) in his first match. Don't know the state of his ankle injury, hope he's fit and raring to go.

By the way, congratulations to the French Davis Cup team for making it to the QF. I would dearly love for them to go all the way this year, they have got quality singles and doubles players. All the best of luck to them. (But no more dead rubbers for Jo please!)

03-11-2010, 07:43 AM
gl,in indian wells jo

03-11-2010, 06:06 PM
Tsonga/Benneteau vs Soderling/Lindstedt first round in doubles.

How's that ankle holding up, Jo?

03-14-2010, 07:18 PM
Jo wins 2nd round vs Matosevic (q) 61 63 :yeah:

03-14-2010, 07:21 PM
Very easy, still not his best tennis though

03-14-2010, 07:23 PM
Matosevic played so no good. Jo's play is still a question.

Tess Gray
03-14-2010, 09:46 PM
Good job Jo:) doubles should be fun to watch!

03-15-2010, 07:42 AM
Solid start for Jo. Seems to adapt reasonably well to the conditions at Indian Wells. Draw not looking so bad after all. All the best of luck!

Tess Gray
03-16-2010, 10:33 PM
Jo playing against Montanes right now. He just lost the first set 6-4 :o

EDIT: and won the second:yeah:

03-16-2010, 11:22 PM
He's very good in the last two sets :)

03-17-2010, 04:54 AM
Awful first set. Did he think Montanes will give him everything without any resistance? Did he think he can win by playing on 5% without any trying to work? OK, Montanes made him work. He enraged him.

In next two sets Jo was angry and furious. What a show!

03-17-2010, 06:28 AM
Well done Jo! That's the spirit, fighting back for a decisive win. Now please take out Soderling.

03-17-2010, 07:53 PM
Jo will play Soderling in 3-4 hours. I don't think I'll stay up so Allez Jo! it must be one of DanaKz's dream match-ups.

Tess Gray
03-17-2010, 09:15 PM
I really want to watch it as well, but I really think it'll be too late for me

Allez Jo-willy...:bounce:

03-17-2010, 09:24 PM
I am still around but I don't want to be a waste tomorrow. we'll see... Nadal better hurry already.

03-17-2010, 10:46 PM
:o nadal taking his time and I am off. I expect to see a victory in 8 hours.

03-18-2010, 04:45 AM
Jo will play Soderling in 3-4 hours. I don't think I'll stay up so Allez Jo! it must be one of DanaKz's dream match-ups.

Definetely not! It's always nightmare for me :(
At least Robin is there.

03-18-2010, 04:47 AM

03-18-2010, 05:38 AM
Guys, I feel really distressed about Jo's late results and (the most important part) about his play.
He looks so sluggish, inert, almost lifeless.
His playing is far worst than he played last year or 2008. Usual tons of errors without his usual tons of winners.
All this s..t really makes me feel like tortured!

Looks like he feeling bad or tired or fed up with all this stuff.

Tess Gray
03-18-2010, 09:47 AM
Damnit Jo!! :(:(

03-18-2010, 10:13 AM
oh my gawd, third loss to robin :ras: I will look at the match stats now with fear.

03-18-2010, 12:29 PM
Didn't think Jo would win, he's definitely been struggling since the AO and Robin's a hard match for him. Still last 16 isn't too bad, last 16 or 1/4s in Miami and I think you'd count the first quarter of the year a success.

03-18-2010, 12:54 PM
Definetely not! It's always nightmare for me :(
At least Robin is there.

I'm sorry  I like it when my faves meet.
Frım what I've read, it looks like Jo played ugly. I hope he plays better in Miami, could be better for Jo, not that windy.

03-22-2010, 06:20 PM
Jo will play Clrment or GGL first. Kohli next (no good) and then ISNER!!!!! Mary-fucking-Poppins this is really bad!!!!! Jo hates playing with guys like him and Isner in very good form now... When Jo has to defend quarter... Really bad news.
Allez Jo!!!! Wake up! We need you!!!!!

03-22-2010, 08:27 PM
Yeah, that Isner dude can play and then some. I sooo did not see him getting in top 20 at all but he did it. Let's take it one match at a time and see how Jo will play in his first match.
I wanted Jo to get to number 8 before RG, I'll do the math and see what his chances are.

Tess Gray
03-22-2010, 08:37 PM
Isner :ras:

But let's not worry about him untill we actually have to ;) Kohli will be hard as well. It's time for Jo to win a few epic matches dont you think?

:bounce: come onnnn

03-22-2010, 08:45 PM
Allez Jo, time to step it up :rocker2:

03-22-2010, 09:14 PM
:( there is like a 1000 point gap betw. Jo and number 8. So my #8 seed dream is a dream for now. I mean it is mathematically possible but he would have to win a lot. The semi-good news is Miami Q is the best he needs to defend. I don't want to get ahead but I just want to write before I forget later, with good draw in Madrid and Rome he can accumulate a lot more points.

03-22-2010, 10:01 PM
If you mean for RG, it's a tough task, but by Wimbledon it could be between him and Cilic for No8 as Roddick has some decent results to defend on clay and I'm not sure he'll repeat such a good clay season.

03-22-2010, 10:21 PM
Yes, I was aiming for RG.
You never know with Roddick, he must be furious now that he lost the IW final. If he channels this loss for something positive he might do very well. I don't know what's up with Cilic, I'm scared he is becoming one of those unpredictable players who can lose to anyone at any time and beat the top guys unexpectedly - which I don't need because a lot of my faves are like that.
from the limited play I've seen, Jo's game was not very bright in IW. Let's hope for a more together game in Miami! Allez!

03-23-2010, 06:44 AM
Come on, Jo. Take one match at a time. Just hold serve, don't concede silly breaks of serve and play to your strengths. No need to be intimidated by big servers - after all, you can outserve and outperform any of them if you remain focused. Best of luck in Miami!

03-25-2010, 10:23 AM
gl in miami..hope you embarrass Rafa like you did in 08

Will it ever start, I was hoping to catch some sleep afterwards

Some barfworthy, 'this-will-go-on-forever' WTA match holding it up. AGAIN.
Whoever thought that 'joint tournaments' was a good idea should be ****. :o

03-29-2010, 01:41 AM
Hopefully, Jankovic will serve it out now and the boys will finally take the court

03-29-2010, 02:17 AM
Jo playing well so far, glad I'll not be sleep deprived for nothing :D

03-29-2010, 03:34 AM
Didn't see the match but first set stats look quite impressive: 100% (12/12) won on first serve, 67% (4/6) on second.

Does anybody know where to find more informative stats table? With all these winners, ue's etc? This protennislive scoreboard is not so detailed.

03-29-2010, 03:35 AM
For the match he had 24 winners and 18 unforced errors.

03-29-2010, 03:37 AM
In general, I don't think there is, but for this match, here's a screen cap courtesy of Arkulari

03-29-2010, 03:45 AM
Thanks. :)
As I see it was pretty average from Jo but he was good on serve.

So... No Isner on the way but Ferrero - it will be tough.

03-29-2010, 10:01 AM
vs Ferrero better be at a decent hour... I tried to wait up last night but it did not start and I was too sleepy. nice UE number. I watched a bit of Ferrero-Isner last night. He was good but not exceptional.

03-29-2010, 12:12 PM
Glad to see he won comfortably last night, I got too tired and had to get some sleep in the end. I like his chances against Ferrero a lot more than against Isner and his serve ¬__¬

03-29-2010, 03:27 PM
Jo's energy level was much better last night. Besides the hiccup in the second set (Kohli was playing much better and Jo tended to go for the "flair") it was pretty comfortable match.

Wino looked miffed at times, but maybe it was because it was so late.

Tess Gray
03-30-2010, 04:23 PM
Jo beat JCF 6-2 6-2 :bounce: I didn't know Jo was going to be playing so early so I didn't see it :( But the score looks solid:yeah:

03-30-2010, 04:30 PM
Jo played really good today! He was too strong for Juanqui.
Haven't seen him playin so good for a long time!
Well done Jo! Really well done!

03-30-2010, 04:33 PM
That was so solid from Jo. He was defending really well patiently and knew when to go for the kill. Serve was wonky but served big when it mattered. Under an hour and 6-2 6-2. I'm encouraged.

Also, did you all see this on Jo's website?

How do you feel physically ?

I fell good physically, a bit better than in Indian Wells, I’ve worked well in between these two event but I do not wish to comment on what I’ve worked on as I don’t want my opponents to know.

03-30-2010, 04:53 PM
 When did this start and finish? I'm an idiot to miss. Allez Jo! I'll be very angry with myself if this match that I missed was one of those smashes and exploding forehands parades :(
I saw that hush-hush comment on his website but I thought it was said in a tongue in cheek attitude :D

03-31-2010, 07:40 AM
Yesterday's performance against Ferrero reminded me why I love Jo's brand of tennis. He had it all going:
-explosive serves (did he really hit 148 and 151mph a couple of times?)
-attacking forehands
-solid backhands (this shot has improved significantly and he's defending better from that side); and
-(gasp) returns of serve - he's getting good balls into play and looking to take control from there

Really happy with his performance. Did not have those moments of madness where he loses serve through silly errors. Will need more of the same against Nadal who, as we know, never says die.

So disappointing  0/8 on BPs and way to many walkabouts on his own serve, pretty much beat himself

He came out playing well. Was even hitting casual backhand winners. Looked nervous but reasonably focused. Had a lot of break point chances in the opening game, but was way too passive on some of them and Rafa played really well to save the others. After missing break points in a couple of return games, Jo imploded. The backhand broke and he became tentative, got broken. Complained to the umpire about Rafa taking too much time (which was true), got into an argument. He had chances to break right back. Couldn't and got broken while serving to stay in the set.

Got broken early in the 3rd. More missed break points, same story. Up 6-3 5-2, Rafa played out of this world to break again for the match.

0/8 on break points. That's the most important stat.
Jo needs to learn to cut out distractions and be patient. Rafa would/could have out-played him anyway, but the match could have been a lot closer than 6-3 6-2.

He did not outplay him at all until he generously gave away his own serve. On the contrary. he was holding comfortably and constantly threatening to break and than just :timebomb:

Jo was a real threat for Nadal when Nadal was in best Nadal form - in 2008? they played sp close and thriller matches...
Now Nadal is not so good - and Jo lose him easily: Bercy and now.
