World No. 18 David Ferrer leads a trio of top Spaniards in action at the Copa Telmex. The 27 year old is making his first appearance in Buenos Aires since 2005, when he suffered a first-round exit (l. to Martin). His best effort came in 2004, when he reached the quarter-finals (l. to Acasuso)

Ferrer sets up Ferrero final

Top seed David Ferrer crushed compatriot Albert Montanes 6-1 6-1 and is favourite to beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in an all-Spanish final at the Buenos Aires Open.
Ferrer of Spain returns the ball to compatriot Montanes during their tennis match at the ATP Buenos Aires Open

The title will remain in Spanish hands after Tommy Robredo's victory at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club last year and Ferrero will be looking for a second successive crown in South America after winning the Brasil Open last week.

Ferrer's semi-final victory came in his second match of the day. He beat Russian sixth seed Igor Andreev 7-5 6-2 in their afternoon quarter-final, postponed due to torrential rain at the claycourt event on Friday.

The world number 19 has a 5-1 record against second seed Ferrero and was in devastating form against Montanes, who only managed to check the former world number four's progress for a few face-saving points at the end of each set.

Montanes had a bye into the semi-finals after home favourite David Nalbandian withdrew with a leg muscle tear on Thursday, having won his first two matches in his comeback tournament from hip surgery nine months ago.

"I'm happy to be in my first final of the year (and) happy there are two Valencians in the final," Ferrer said, referring to his and Ferrero's home province of Valencia.

Once again, finishing is his problem. He could have already won this match, but is now on the edge of losing. Ferrero 3 out 3 in bps, Ferrer 3 out 9...

Totally breaks down now, what is that?! He plays an excellent tournament, but loses one set and totally loses it. Happened in Australia and Joburg as well. That's really bad...

I know, but Ferrer in his best days was always fighting and not giving games that easily.

But it's not over yet! It's a great match and I'd really like David to win it. I think it's so important for him to get over his little slump. He has to start returning a lot better though.

Lost. Terrible returning in the 3rd set. Too bad he only plays well for two sets. Ferrero played well though and deserves it.

There you go, that's the David we know and love.:lol:

He should really have won that but .... hey ...... it happens. If he had to lose to somebody I kinda like the fact that it's Juan Carlos.:) David needs to get back to playing more aggressive. I don't think it's a case of giving up or not fighting. I'm pretty sure that's not in his nature. But unfortunately he needs to go back to 2007 to check what that kinda play (aggressive) looks like.

Ferrer wins Buenos Aires title

World number five David Ferrer claimed his 13th career title with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 victory over fellow Spaniard and 2011 winner Nicolas Almagro in the Buenos Aires Open final on Sunday.

Ferrer, runner-up to compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero in 2010, recovered from dropping his only set of the tournament to improve his head-to-head record against world number 11 Almagro to 9-0.

"I'm really happy, this was an account I had pending. This title is something very important to me," Ferrer, who had dispatched local favourite David Nalbandian 6-1 6-4 in their semi-final, said in a courtside interview.

Having conceded the opening set of the final between the top two seeds, the 29-year-old Ferrer said his experience had helped him through.

"With Nico they are always very physical matches. With the passing of the years one doesn't have that anxiety of youth," he said after breaking Almagro in the fourth game of the second set and in the third and fifth of the decider.
