Better defender: Murray or Fed?

Fed's past his peak but at his best, is Murray better? All I know is that watching the Cilic match Murray reminded me a hell of lot of a certain Spaniard.

Roger's defense is hugely underrated, he can grit and rough up a lot of matches he should have lost

BUT

Murray is by far the better defender because that's his default style of play, his ROS is pretty good and since he has worked so hard on his fitness, he can now chase balls for hours ;)

Federer's defence against Davydenko has always been pretty good.

murray is the better defender, as roger is older, he has lost that edge in speed, but roger still is one of the best movers out there.

this is also a factor, Roger isn't as fast as he used to be when he was Murray's age, but even then he was so good, he usually won by attacking alone and didn't need to defend as much ;)

If you just mean who can get more balls back, I would give a slight, slight edge to Murray, even with Federer at his prime. But if you include in defense also what you can do with the ball once you get there, then it's Fed, no question, granted Murray is not a slouch there either.

Fed's best defense is his offense against Davydenko. Murray is by far the better defender. Nadal is also a great defender but he puts himself in too big of a hole to defend sometimes and his forehand grip isn't great for that either on a fast court or a huge hitter on a medium court.

Yep, Roger definitely relied less on his defense than Murray, but it was still top notch. And especially in terms of going from defense to offense, he was clearly the best, which is no longer the case.

excellent +1. Federer defends with aggression (kinda crazy). Best of all time in that reguard. Murray is more of a scrapper and defends with deffence. Its tough to get Federer on retriever mode because of his ability to take the ball early. He just wont let himself get pushed back. Andy loves it back there.
