The third consecutive hard court Grand Slam that these two will play in. Both times del Potro won in four after losing the first set. These are the only two times the youngest two players in the top 100 have met:

2009 US Open Q Del Potro 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1
2009 Australian Open R16 Del Potro 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2

What a fabulous line and a win/win scenario for you. If he loses, it was because he was injured, if he wins he's an ubermensch. Superman this guy playing a full slam week with an injury and smart too. It's sure to pay off in one's career in the long run to put the wrist under such strain if it is injured, all for one slam appearance, where you're likely to lose anyway since, well you're injured. Am I getting across to you?

Delpo is more consistant and somehow has vary good tactics. He will probably tank and set just to rest and than go full speed and win the match!!!!! If for some reason, Marin is on fire and precise he can do a lot of damage.

I don't know what to make of Del Potro this tournament. On the one hand he seems injured, out of form, really struggling to put it together, on the other hand he keeps winning ugly and marching on - and maybe he will play himself into form?

My gut says Cilic in something like 4 on the theory that Juan can't keep having this long tough struggles against better players and continue to win, he will run out of gas. Yet I will not be at all surprised if Juan stepped up a lot for this match and dismissed Cilic fairly comfortably. He's an enigma this tournament, JMDP.

Harmless
01-22-2010, 09:42 PM
Cilic in 4 or 5.

I think we'll be seeing this match-up a loooot in the future. Marin is probably aware of that, he has to dig in as soon as possible, if he doesn't want to be run over early on.
At this point in time, JMDP is clearly the more evolved player, Cilic growing into his game a little more slowly, but JM is a little weaker than normal now, so it's a good time for Marin to exploit that and get the HtH more level.

It's interesting that Juan Martin is only 5 days older than Marin. :D

Del Potro in 4 sets. The battle of the 2 biggest ball bashers in tennis right here.

serveandvolley80
01-22-2010, 10:07 PM
What the hell is with people over using the term ball basher, since when is it a crime to be tall and hit the ball with power?

Is Murray's pusher style more entertaining for everyone? Oh wait that's strategy right?

Del Potro and Cilic have both shown touch at the net, both guys move amazingly well which is part of what makes their shots so good, they put themselves in great position and are fast for their size.

There have been plenty of one dimensional players on tour, but these guys aren't it.

Despite the fact you are a drooling retard, i will explain it slowly to you, Del Potro was the same way before his US open win, no big breakthroughs, couple of quarter final results, and a bunch of mm tournament wins, he did not even win a 1000 event before winning at the US open.

So basically you are looking at a carbon copy situation, except the fact that Cilic is probably not going to win a grand slam yet, but he will get one eventually.

JMDP always looks like that. Sometimes it's painful to watch but it's a little misleading.

Cilic is due a big breakout and will be a future slam winner (I think he's got more upside than JMDP) but I don't think it starts here. JMDP in 4 or 5.

Often the favourite against which top guys?

Cilic is the 2nd youngest guy in the Top 100 and has a ton of upside. If you're writing him off already then you're little short of being fully fledged dunce.

He had made the previous QFs in the US and Australian opens though. Also the SFs in Roland Garros, where quite likely he would have beaten Federer with a bit more stamina. He also took Murray to 3 sets in the Montreal final just before, and had a couple of other masters semis to his name. He started UO 2009 ranked 6.

Cilic by contrast is 1/5 in slam R16, and that was versus an injured opponent. In masters he's 2/7 in R3, and 0/2 in QFs. He's ranked 14 now, same as he was 8 months ago.

lol I was just saying these are the biggest hitters on tour. (Serve and groundstrokes overall) Without that power they would not be in a good position to be running around. Luckily, they don't have to do that much and can just dictate the match.

There's a difference between choking, and just being wildly off your game.

You're only going so far in a tournament if you get bagelled by Flo Mayer.
