I didn't know they played best of three at the Ozzie Open...

Isner was wishing this was best of three. But he hung in there and pulled it out, gets a much needed day of rest now.

Edited,sorry guys

John looked dead tired and Louk was fighting his heart out. Third set was incredible drama. John again showed his extraordinary mental toughness. He is as clutch as they come. Now rest up :)

Yeah, Isner was almost toast at the end of the second, needed treatment. Just managed to hang on and nick the tiebreak - he'd probably have lost if it went 1-1 there.

Isner served 9 aces in the 2nd set but 4 of them in the tie-break (+ 1 service winner)! I saw this Sorensen for the first time in my life. The guy has very short neck.

Sorensen played his heart out in the end. He hit some ridiculous shots and he wanted it so bad. It just wasn't meant to be. I wish he won at least a set. 99 to 94 total points won but he didnt win a single set :( Isner too good on important points.

Irish guy would have deserved a set here.

I'm sure Mr Irish has won alot of fans during this tourney, myself included. Hopefully he can keep progressing this year and edge close to the top 100.

BTW what a mental giant this tall guy is.

Obviously, John's service game was outstanding again.

Louk's serve was surprisingly good despite his 5'9 height disadvantage. I was impressed with how easily Louk held his own serve and how many aces and unreturnable serves he also had. Also, Louk doesn't hit many unforced errors and John really had to earn his points when he wasn't serving. These match stats are pretty revealing for both players:

Just about a 2:1 winner to unforced error ratio for Louk if you add the aces to the winners. :yeah: You can also see how close the match was (99 pts to 94).

Louk did lose his serve after scraping his leg in the 5-5 game in the third set when he had two break points to serve out the set. It seemed to take him out of rhythm on his next service game, and it was the only bad service game I witnessed today. He had some brilliant winners and played a solid match today.

The 70 extra points should improve his ranking to a career high, somewhere around #205. With a few more results like this he could break into the top 200 and set his sights on the top 100. Isner was very complimentary of Louk's efforts and it was nice to see him get some major television coverage and exposure. He handled the big stage pretty well.

One obvious complaint, Louk needs to play the big points a little better. He had a couple of bad misses at the net that could have turned the whole match around in his favor, but flubbed them. Unfortunately, this included the match point. Total points won was extremely close, only 5 points in Isner's favor. That margin is not usually indicative of a 3 straight set victory.

Aw poor Louk :( Still it was a good run (if one match in the MD can be considered a good run )

In Irish Tennis History, it is downright "legendary".

Also clarified your comment by adding the word in bold. Louk won his first round match. That hasn't happened with someone sporting the Irish flag in a GS in aeons.

well done isner, now get some rest and keep up the good form!

Dude was laying it down that match, he was tripping everywhere and he just got up like a spartan, that Sorensen.

Isner got a bit lucky with the match delay for the trainer, he was huffing and puffing till he really blew the house down.

Good match. It deserved a 5 setter for the people who couldn't pay to get in Rod Laver

So proud of him, this loss is no shame, rather it shows what a fighter he is.
