Sorry, didn't mean to leave the impression that I was anything but a news follower.

I have been on the scene for an accident, and it seemed that it took forever for an ambulance to arrive to treat the people who were in pain. It took perhaps 30 minutes for the ambulance to arrive. That's really no time at all, but it seemed like forever. I can't imagine what these people are going through. And last night the doctors were called away from patients because of "security risks." That happened in New Orleans too, and there were really NO security risks. There were rumors but they were false. There are always going to be rumors and alarms in these chaotic situations. The whole thing can't grind to a halt because of it.

I know it's incredibly frustrating to think that people are dying and feel like nobody is helping. That's something very difficult to imagine and accept, even more so because if something like this were to happen in our countries you would expect to be rescued/brought to a hospital etc... but Haiti was already one of the poorest country on earth before the earthquake and the insecurity, lawlessness and especially corruption were incredibly high.

NGOs have to be very careful to ensure the safety of their members and that the food/water/medicines actually goes to the right people, I know that a lot of things were really messed up during the Tsunami relief effort because people rushed in too quickly. I just hope they can find the right balance

I'm aware of all of that.

There are always going to be things that are messed up in a relief situation. Perfect organization, however, is not the goal.

elessar
01-16-2010, 03:37 PM
No but it's made more difficult when there are barely any infrastructures left on the island to support or coordinate relief efforts. The goal is to help as many people as possible, I'm hoping the UN and NGOs have more experience in this than we do and know what they're doing.

I know what you mean - you wonder why they can't just get aid materials as quickly as possible onto, say, an aircraft carrier off the coast, load up military helicopters with supplies, and low fly over affected areas dropping supplies to the ground to help the most vulnerable groups immediately - while the logistics of more coordinated relief is set up. It's so frustrating to see reports that aid is sat on the tarmac at the airport but is moving very slowly from there to where it's actually needed. I know the concern with that approach is fear of rioting when supplies are dropped but even that seems preferable to just leaving the aid where it is until it can be doled out in a controlled manner.

I adore Lambiel and JM says I hate all Swiss. I don't even hate Fediva. Should we look for you in the audience? It's good to hear Lambiel is back.

Can't think why a Greek Cypriot wouldn't have heard an obscure reference to a 19th century work of english children's fiction written by a strange man with an unhealthy interest in a young female named Alice..... :rolls:

Also what exactly does it mean in up in the air when he sends her a text saying "you should rub one out?" I'm glad this one got straightened out.

I am getting so frustrated over the Haiti relief effort.

If NOBODY wants to take any risk, and EVERYTHING has to be correctly organized before ANYBODY does ANYTHING, EVERYBODY is going to be DEAD! I know what you mean. The orphanage I mentioned before that is run by my grandfather's friend had four girls killed. Over 100 are fine though, so that's good to hear.

Edit: I didn't even have to delete any smileys in this post even having quoted Maria's smiley-filled skating post. That post alone took up over half the alloted smileys.

This night more ready for The Golden Globes :o

We'll see from tomorrow :rocker2:
I will be staying in the hospital this evening; big snow storm coming my way here on the coast. No tv.
Suey, I will be done with the reports in about half an hour. I can say this Pico Monaco is not very optimistic about Argentina's chances at the World Cup.
Can't wait :yeah: Speaking of World Cup- the ex had wanted a month off to head to SA for the Cup this year. Won't get it now where he ended up
= computer issues to me

a little girl perhaps? :awww:

Yeah that would have nice.

Oh it will be thanks :) Just me and an oncall room. I mind driving in the snow when they predict poor visibility. Half of my drive would be on backroads that are narrow and pretty scary not only in the dark when I head out in the morning but also when you can't see well. And then when I actually get to the turnpike it is loaded with BIG trucks that just spray up the snow making visibility worse. I have been in a number of near misses over the years and promised hubby that I would not put myself in harms way anymore. :o Of course now I can't keep him warm either

Isn't it? I can only smile

He will live Suey, just checking out which matches I am going to see today. Luckily all the good ones will be on outside courts, though I hope Russell can put on a good show against the Tandil tower.

I wasn't sure about DGT, that's not a very good pic of him, you didn't catch his best angle :p
I like Kavcic but that Seppi pic just left my wordless :hearts:

You seem to be enjoying yourself:yeah: Word has it that DelPotro's wrist is problematic; reads like tendinitis. Hope it is an enjoyable match!
