He's got a qualifier in R1, Gicquel or Bolelli in R2, Nieminen or Melzer R3, Ferrer or Monfils in R4 and in Rafa's quarter http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/scores/draws/ms/r1s4.html

Andi-M

Murray's potential path to title.

Qualifier
Bolelli/Gicquel
Melzer
Monfils/Ferrer
Nadal
Del Potro/Roddick
Federer/Denko/Djoker

Glad he avoided Cilic,Nando,Gonzo should make QFs Vs Nadal...what a match that could be.

Melzer again is gah! Hope not another one like the US Open in 08, more like the Aussie Open in 09 please! (Just not like the Verdasco one in 09 if you don't mind)

As reasonable draw as could be hoped for.

I would have preferred him to land in Djokovic's quarter (or possibly Del Potro who has injury concerns) but at that stage it's highly unlikely any of them would be an easy match anyway.

We can but hope - but I'm not looking that far - I'm looking at who could be the big banana skin in the early rounds that could send him, in that awful cliché, crashing out.

We can but hope - but I'm not looking that far - I'm looking at who could be the big banana skin in the early rounds that could send him, in that awful cliché, crashing out.

Its possible an inspired Monfils can do it, but his game is like Murray 2.0. Murray can attack better than Monfils and is more consistant off the ground so really this shouldnt happen but if crowd get behind Monfls it is possible, but unlikely I think.

Earlier than that I doubt, there are some tricky players in qualie draw but cmon theres no way he should lose to one of them but I can see him dropping a set if his mind goes wondering, then the 2R/3R look straight forward enough. Meltzer has got game sometimes but the level Murray has shown in 2010 shouldnt really drop more than a set to Meltzer and that will only happen if his brain disappears for a set which it seems to do quite often.

scoobs
01-18-2010, 08:51 AM
Andy wins 61 61 62

Good overall off the ground today I thought, but ended up with about 33% first serves over the course of the whole match, which is way too low. He got away with that today, Anderson was pretty lost and pathetic from start to finish, but he'll want to urgently address those numbers for R2.

Turquoise
01-18-2010, 10:13 AM
I'm delighted Andy cruised through the first round - important to save energy. Needs to be wary of complacency as it certainly won't be a walk in the park hereon. The poor first serve percentage can come back to bite him against a better quality opponent, so hope that improves. Glad though that he's mixing his game up nicely, a bit more savvy about attacking options - may he go from strength to strength. Great start, keep going Andy!

MsTree

Andy next up Wednesday morning 8am on Margaret Court vs Marc Gicquel

They've played once, Rotterdam last year en route to Andy winning the title - Gicquel took it to a third set before retiring 0-3 down in the final set with an injury.

So this might be tricky, definitely has the potential to be the banana skin match of week 1.

Andi-M
01-19-2010, 02:39 PM
I am slightly worried about this one. Just that score in Rotterdam isn't very convincing, Andy obviously cant deal with his game that easily, and Andy was playing quite well back then too.

Can't watch it, but I'll catch up on i-player if Andy wins :D.

Turquoise

Well, this result should put to rest any false hopes that Gicquel had about beating him when fit.

Happy with his performance so far - economical efficiency. Just don't put his foot off the gas even against Serra, who had a brutal five-setter today.

scoobs
01-20-2010, 11:08 AM
61 64 63

Not too bad - still nowhere near top gear, didn't need to be I suppose, based on that scoreline - Gicquel did push him to raise his level at times in the last two sets though.

Next up Florent Serra, who overcame Jarkko Nieminen in a tough 5 setter which finished after Andy's match.

scoobs
01-22-2010, 05:46 AM
yeah this is a concern - but thus far he seems able to play through it okay so maybe it's just a twinge or spasm that he can get rubbed out later.

scoobs
01-22-2010, 05:48 AM
i'm all for players not taking unnecessary timeouts but Andy seems to have a macho aversion to taking any timeouts at all even when there seems to be a reason for one quite clearly.

MsTree
01-22-2010, 05:51 AM
I agree Scoobs :) I think he jarred it going for one of Flo's mental FHs!
I love it when he's forced to raise his game - just wish he had a serve
It looks really hot and sweaty out there!

scoobs
01-22-2010, 05:56 AM
yeah nasty conditions, 33 degrees, overcast and humid.

whatever it was doesn't seem to be bothering him much at this point - after a couple of games where the first serve speed was well down, it's now creeping back up again and he just nailed a huge first serve to secure the 4-1 lead.

so my heart has calmed down a bit, but i'm keeping an eye on his demeanour and his play to see if there are any more effects.

MsTree
01-22-2010, 06:13 AM
I'm almost completely calm again now :)

scoobs
01-22-2010, 06:15 AM
Yeah whatever it was, it in some strange way it seems to have helped him out because his focus and execution has been a good deal better since that point.

MsTree
01-22-2010, 06:19 AM
I'm just about on the floor laughing at the slagging Flo's getting for that medical timeout for his "elbow injury" :haha:

scoobs
01-22-2010, 06:29 AM
he didn't want it, of course, the umpire told him he had to take it because he was bleeding and then there's concerns about ballkids touching bloody towels, etc

MsTree
01-22-2010, 06:37 AM
Ah OK I missed that due to the slagging ;)

scoobs
01-22-2010, 06:46 AM
Hmm.

75 61 64

He's through, straight sets, no sets conceded through to the fourth round.

However today was better behind serve, 55% but 14 aces too and better second serves. Yet, the ground game was less tidy today, more UEs than we're used to seeing, and the returning was dodgy at times, unusually. A couple odd blips - from being on the cusp of 4-0 in the first he was pegged back on serve, and struggled to finish the first set off. The second was one way traffic, then he did get 2 breaks in the third before dumping serve again, and from that point on it was a question of riding out the one remaining break

It's been good enough, but there's no more time now for things to be subpar - 4th round on is where you need to be bringing it. He may survive a 4th round not totally at 100% but no way after that, and he'd be far better playing his best tennis on sunday to even give himself a chance of a strong finish at this event

MsTree
01-22-2010, 06:49 AM
Nice interview from Andy, he mentioned too that Flo didn't want to stop playing but the umpire made him.

Glad he's through that test :D

The dude is 9-0 in sets so far; and he has one "7-5 winning set" and everyone is saying "what about that first set in the third match; boy is he struggling!" :haha: :haha:

I just watched Del Pony fight his arse off and happy as hell to get a 7-5 4th set to finally take his third match.

Right now, Muzza, Kolya, Rafa and Tsonga are the only ones not to have to struggle on these slow hard courts. He is doing great! Congrats to Andy for a great tourney so far!

Turquoise

Thanks Andy for the clinical displays in the first three rounds. :hatoff:

The lapses of concentration are not reflected in the scorelines - he's such an exceptional returner that he manages to recover from deficit situations. On Sunday, I hope he improves that first serve percentage. I have confidence that he can take the sting out of Isner's missiles. Stay healthy, treat those twinges and niggles and all the best for a great fourth round match.

scoobs
01-22-2010, 12:34 PM
Yes he has not struggled through his first three rounds, for which I am glad, but which I would also expect given the calibre of opposition - Anderson, Gicquel and Serra are not names that strike fear into the heart of the top 10, nor should they be.

Maybe it seems harsh but to me Andy has no more than he really *should* have done by this point if he is going to be a serious contender for this title. He's had a cakewalk draw this far, frankly, and he's taken full advantage. Excellent. But he's not performed any extraordinary feats in order to do so.

Now Isner scares me slightly, If this was 3rd round I'd be like Andy will win, but cos its the dreaded 4th round I am more nervous.

On the other hand, John did have a let-down match after a big win in his last slam. Remember after he beat Andy Roddick at the U.S. Open in the Third Round of the U.S. Open playing at his highest level? The next round Verdasco beat him pretty routinely 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and he had been "hot" at that time too. Isner's career win-loss record in Grand Slams is 8-7 and the U.S. Open 2009 was his only venture into the Fourth Round. So meeting John in later rounds in a slam has not proven to be a "death blow" whatsoever.

I'm slightly on edge but I'm also conscious that Isner is now VERY tired.

I don't think he has much left - I think if Monfils had been able to get that 4th set today Isner would have folded like a cheap tent in the fifth.

So I think Andy needs to play extraordinarily badly to lose. But that is still possible - Andy is still capable of these banana skin performances. But it would have to be a shocker, because Isner on paper has the sort of game that Andy normally gobbles up - big but readable serve that he can return regularly, game based pretty much on power forehand and some volleying. Andy normally makes players like this look very ordinary.

I think there's good reason for optimism here, but Isner should not be underestimated either.

tedlesurfeur

Monfils didn't have a lot of matches under his belt. Andy cannot fall into the Isner trap.

Im well happy with a late Saturday night, as opposed to sleeping for an hour or 2 wake up for match, get sucked into other matches and being tired for rest of day!

I don't know if it'll please Andy too much though, but I doubt Isner is an early bird either and he's bound to be tired from all his matches this year. Im really looking forward to this It'll be good for Andy to have some pressure in sets he's only had like one 4 all or 5 all situation all tournament.

Well to be honest Im not supposed to skip. Our sessions are compulsary and their is a register, but some people skip and they seem to get away with it so I might try it, if I wake up feeling extremely guilty i might go in...

AO well and truly sucks for time! If I watch this I can't skip Thursday morning too which is the SF. Even if Murray wasnt in it I'd still wanna watch it any combo of the remaining 4 players will produce a good SF.

MsTree

You may as well skip tomorrow, just say you slept in, if our Andy beats Rafa, you'll be well annoyed you missed it, and I think Andy v Andy or v Marin might be the day SF on Thursday, and Fed/Davy v Nole/Jo at night. Just a thought :)

Nervous now.

Just play your best Andy, whatever happens.

I feel like Rafa is one of the very few players who can beat Andy when Andy is doing everything right, so this result may be somewhat out of Andy's hands - if that's how it pans out, so be it, but if Andy gets his chances, I really hope he can take them.

He knows he can do this, he's done it before in New York.

COME ON!

scoobs
01-26-2010, 09:41 AM
I got my request.

Murray 5-2*, hold to 15, not really pressured there in spite of missing a bunch of first serves.

Andy's a little too keen on the big flat serve down the T for my liking - when it lands, it's awesome but it's a bit of a low percentage serve so when he's going there too much and doesn't have the rhythm, his first serve % plummets - and Rafa is trying to attack on the second serve, so he needs to watch that.

Andi-M
01-26-2010, 09:41 AM
Just f'in awesome from Murray :hearts:

Truc
01-26-2010, 09:44 AM

01-26-2010, 09:47 AM
I'm loving the development of

a) a heavy forehand
b) a forehand down the line

by Murray - two areas I thought was a glaring gap in his arsenal.

Rafa holds to 30. *5-3, Andy to serve for it

scoobs
01-26-2010, 10:19 AM
Nadal holds to 15

3-2* second set.

I think fireworks are due now.

The end of this set could be a very tight one - on balance of play so far, Nadal looks the slightly more likely winner to me but that could change very quickly. Andy looks just a tad flat at the start of this set to me.

Andi-M
01-26-2010, 10:22 AM
Andy is not as intense this set at all, Nadal well sharper than him, these fireworks prob what Murray needs to refocus.

MsTree

I agree Scoobs but only becaue I think Andy's dropped his level a bit. This match is on his racquet, he needs to keep his level high!
