I suppose everyone realises that the name Parera can be broken into Par and Era. Par meaning average and Era a period a time, suggesting that the level of men's tennis is only average at the moment. I think it is pretty funny considering the amount of people who say stuff like 'mug era'.

First, it isn't a nickname, it's Rafa's surname. Spaniards have a double-barrelled surname composed of both parents' surnames. In Spain women have never taken their husbands' surnames. So first name plus that double-barrelled surname is Spaniards' legal full name. Then, in their everyday lives, people use the composed surname or just a part of it, depending on their preferences.For example, Spain's Prime Minister is called J.L Rodríguez Zapatero. As he tends to use his mother's surname, people call him simply 'Zapatero'. Another example is painter Pablo Ruiz Picasso. He always used his mother's surname and that was the one he transmitted to his children.
