The Rock/Pop Music Thread

Pfloyd
12-17-2009, 01:29 PM
So we have a "Prog Rock" thread, a "Heavy Metal Thread", but I have not seen a "normal rock/pop" thread.

Sure, all these terms are rather obscure, and often such terms merge, but one could argue that groups like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, U2, Oasis, Blur, Billy Joel, Elton John, Robbie Williams and many others do not fit in into either category, so I think it would be cool to have a thread that allows for these groups to be listen to.

So, here goes:

Go ahead, post, have some fun and "It's Still Rock and Roll To Me"

What do you expect from today's people? Most are listening to non-emotional music.

I guess you won't get the same number of posts in the same time like in the Heavy Metal or Prog Rock thread.

You could well be right, but if others choose not to post, and I am sure that some will (as one has already done), I'll post it for myself. :p

There has to be Rock fans out there, no?

I know that Arkulari and Bonnie The Cat would like this thread....

if so you should have called this thread rock only

i think you got me wrong though. even most rock songs are non-emotional imo.

Hmmm.

Thing is that if I post Billy Joel or Bob Dylan and other artists similar to them, people would complain this is not a "Rock" Thread, so the "Pop" thing would broaden the spectrum of the thread.

I do see what you are saying though.

Well if its toooo loud and the person is yelling or saying "dark" lyrics then it goes into Heavy Metal. (Korn, Alice in Chains, Gojira, etc)

If the song has too many transitions (weird sounds, something not generally common in other types of rock) then it goes into the Prog Rock section, think of Pink Floyd and other bands like it, as Prog.

More "middle of the road" songs belong here.

Post, and I think I might be able tell you if you are correct, but so far, the songs posted fit into this thread.

And sorry, I did not understand your question. :p

See, you know what you are doing :)

Yes, well Karin (Bonnie the Cat) loves Prog more than regular rock, but I think lots of Prog, if not all, belong in this "rock" category, but that's her thread, and I will not intrude in it. :p

Edit: Not all Pink Floyd is Prog too, so unless they have quite lengthy guitar solos (Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Dogs, Money) much of it fits here. So you can post Syd Barret Era Floyd and other songs too.

Heck, just post Floyd if you want, if Karin has any problems with Floyd in specific, we can work out an agreement, I don't think she will mind ONE band, just because of my user name :p

Oh yay, I don't suck  Thank you :) My friends constantly take the mick, saying I have excellent wide ranging, even obscure at times taste but can't for the life of me tell you the difference between prog rock, space rock, nu metal, alternative rock, soft rock, lo fi, electronic rock, punk, metal, heavy metal, jungle, garage etc etc

Some Floyd can be a bit trippy but there are some tunes which are more regular rock in my opinion, similarly with Deep Purple. Can't really be classified in one genre IMO. Anyway I won't risk them ;)

There's no such thing as a 'normal' rock. Even the early rock & roll from the 50's can be subdivided in subgenres.

The Byrds were not only rock but folk rock, country rock, jazz rock, raga rock, psyche rock, etc depending on the song.

Creedence Clearwater Revival invented swamp rock but were also country or folk or whatever when they felt like it.

To only talk about the non-prog bands I love. :wavey:

Not into them, but funnily enough I met some members of OneRepublic in a dodgy Irish pub in Shepherd's Bush the other day. At least, they said they were, & they certainly weren't locals. I'd never heard of them, which they seemed to find refreshing. Seem to remember the bass player's girlfriend was painfully hot.

I know, also a Billy fan if you don't remember!! ;) I actually really DON'T like Keeping the Faith... and River of Dreams is another I don't like because it came out when my parents divorced so it reminds me of that which is weird - but it's one of those time/song association things.

Uptown Girl however is my absolute favourite just because it is the happy song I play whenever I'm feeling down. It always cheers me up

Actually, the only Joel songs I don't like are Captain Jack and Pressure, besides that all of them have are fine with me, with varying degrees of "like-a-bility"
