2010 PAW Managers Thread - 2 managers needed for next week, last tournaments

Welcome in the 2010 PAW Managers Thread!

As stated many times during the last 2 seasons, the number of managers has been decreasing fastly and the possibility of the game ending became real, so we are inviting other players to manage tournaments during the 2010 season. If we get 5% of the total number of players helping it will already be great. It's an easy task and it doesn't demand many time specially at the smaller tournaments. Excell sheets are uploaded at the end of this post and you can ask any questions in this thread. As well as saying which tournament you want to manage, which you can do right now :wavey:

2010 PAW SEASON

> Top managers: sdtoot, hallso, -Evita- and jrm
> allowed to take any mandatory tournaments + 1 non-mandatory per month

> Other managers
> allowed to take any mandatory tournaments + 2 non-mandatory per month

* a manager can't take tournaments in straight weeks, being or not a top manager;

* if no manager takes a tournament until 1 day before the main draw is released, following the rules above, the tournament is cancelled, the players commited to this tournament are moved to the other(s) of the week (if there's any) and the circuit moves on.

PAW scoring points calculation
Formula:

PLAYER'S A ranking pts: A
PLAYER'S B ranking pts: B

Player's A PAW scoring pts: = SQRT (100*B / A) or 10*SQRT(B)/SQRT(A)
Player's B PAW scoring pts: = SQRT (100*A / B) or 10*SQRT(A)/SQRT(B)
(SQRT=square root)

EXAMPLE:

Madrid 2007 Final:

FEDERER, Roger vs NALBANDIAN, David

FEDERER, Roger rank pts: 7355
NALBANDIAN, David rank pts: 1195

FEDERER, Roger PAW Scoring pts = SQRT (100*1195/7355) = 4.03 = 4
NALBANDIAN, David PAW Scoring pts = SQRT (100*7355/1195) = 24.81 = 25

FEDERER, Roger vs NALBANDIAN, David ..........(4-25)

Note:

1. The ranking list to be used for PAW scoring points is the ranking at the time of the draw,
normally it's the previous week's ranking (but in Indian Wells and Miami case
the draw comes out AFTER the new ranking is released)

2. Round off all scoring pts to the nearest integer, eg. 10.49 = 10 but 10.50 = 11.

3. In case of unranked player or a player who has less than 40 ranking pts,
he is allocated 40 pts for the calculation of PAW scoring points.

For beginning manager

All managers, please don't forget about the name format in ranking table which I've mentioned here (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?p=3473997#post3473997)
Name has exactly 23 symbols (letters),

Now we only need a manager for Brisbane to complete the first week.

Caio_Brasil
12-20-2009, 11:38 PM
2 weeks for the new season to start, any volunteer for Brisbane?

hallso
12-27-2009, 02:34 AM
some time ago, I propose Shaun, that few "top" managers can manage only mandatory tournaments
just to check if the game can exist without them
what do you think?

btw I will take Melbourne

Caio_Brasil
12-27-2009, 03:21 AM
The ideia is good, we just would have to define who the top managers are and when we would start with this rule.

Thanks a lot for taking the GS btw, your work is really much appreciated :yeah:

hallso
12-28-2009, 07:41 PM
I thought about Caio, sdtoot, hallso and Evita, robuś if the last two want/have time to manage

Caio_Brasil
12-28-2009, 10:56 PM
Here's an idea that could work in my opinion:

First of all, we have to decide who the top managers are and we must look at some numbers (I did a quick research, there may be errors; these are the players who managed more than 1 tournament last year):

-sdtoot: 14 (2 GS, 3 MS and the WTF);
-hallso: 8 (1 GS, 2 MS);
-jrm: 8 (0 GS, 0 MS);
--Evita-: 7 (1 GS, 1 MS);
-Caio_Brasil: 5 (0 GS, 0 MS);
-Boarder35m: 4 (0 GS, 0 MS);
-nkp2: 4 (0 GS, 0 MS);
-greatkingrat: 2 (0 GS, 1 MS);
-Aguante_El_Gato: 2 (0 GS, 1 MS);
-TankingTheSet: 2 (0 GS, 1 MS);
-Action Jackson: 2 (0 GS, 0 MS).

sdtoot, hallso and -Evita- are clearly the ones who are used to take the big tournaments, which are those with more than 60/70 players signed up. These are, without a doubt, top managers.

Then we have myself, jrm (didn't notice you managed 8 tournaments, thanks a lot!), Boarder35m and nkp2 with 4+ tournaments managed but all non-mandatory. Some of those were the only tournament of the week so it's not much different from managing a mandatory one. In my specific case I just took the tournaments that were probably going to be cancelled, in the last minute.

In my opinion the top managers would be sdtoot, hallso, -Evita- and I would include jrm here as well.

The defined top managers would be able to take 1 ATP 250/500 per month + any mandatory he/she wants. Otherwise, I really don't think we would have enough managers to all the tournaments. Just check 2009 managers thread and you'll see that there were many cases of players managing straight weeks.

Considering that the busiest month is February (12 tournaments, all non-mandatory), if each of the top managers took 1 tournament there would be 8 left for other players to take. The other months aren't that busy and tend to have 5-7 non-mandatory tournaments.

For those who are not top managers, there would be a limit of 2 non-mandatory per month + the mandatory ones.

In resume, that's the proposed idea:

> Top managers: sdtoot, hallso, -Evita- and jrm
> allowed to take any mandatory tournaments + 1 non-mandatory per month

> Other managers
> allowed to take any mandatory tournaments + 2 non-mandatory per month

* a manager can't take tournaments in straight weeks, being or not a top manager;

* if no manager takes a tournament until 1 day before the main draw is released, following the rules above, the tournament is cancelled, the players commited to this tournament are moved to the other(s) of the week (if there's any) and the circuit moves on.

If there's agreement from board members, other managers and any regular players who visit this thread we can start the year using these rules already. I would keep track of everything on this issue.

hallso
12-28-2009, 11:48 PM
I agree
also I will add my own "schedule": 2GS (AO + one of mid-season), 3 atp1000 (probably Miami, Paris and one more) and NOT more than 2 smaller, including none in February
we will see if there are enough volunteers to keep all 12 tournaments in play

of course real life can change my plans, as always

edit: btw I put managers achievments in 2008-09 here (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=90767) ;)

Caio_Brasil
12-29-2009, 01:45 PM
I ask players not to bump the old managers thread again, otherwise this won't be seen and we won't decide what to do by the start of the season.

Also we need a manager for Brisbane. I want to take a 2nd week tournament but if nobody takes Brisbane I'm up for it.

Boarder35m
12-29-2009, 02:19 PM

What about the managers rules, what do you think about it?

Boarder35m
12-29-2009, 05:16 PM
Thanks Alex, just choose the one you prefer :yeah:

What about the managers rules, what do you think about it?

Maybe Sydney is a bit better for me because it has less time differences while Auckland has less for you ;)

For me it is fine to manage a mandatory event or a non-mandatory one.
I must confess that I don´t understand what the sense of the new rule would be, since I think that there is rather a lack of managers than too many of them. :p

Caio_Brasil
12-29-2009, 06:03 PM
The point of the new rule (I suppose hallso agrees here) is to find out whether PAW can survive or not. If we keep having only few managers one time the game will disapeer (players who have time to help now may not have in the future), so we have to encourage new players to help and this seems the best way to do it. If tournaments are cancelled, then some other players may want to manage so all tournaments are played.

Also I think it's unfair that a few managers have to do the job during many weeks of the year when this can be better distributed.

Caio_Brasil
12-29-2009, 06:07 PM
By the way, I'll take Brisbane and put Alex for Sidney if he's ok with it. :)

Auckland needs a manager and we have until January 8th to find someone to do it (if the new rules are applied, sdtoot, Caio_Brasil, hallso, Boarder35m and jrm aren't eligible to take it).

sdtoot
12-29-2009, 06:16 PM
Caio, Your proposal seems fine to me - like Alex says, we will need to see what response we get from other players to help manage the smaller tournaments.

I am more than happy to concentrate on running the bigger tournaments if necessary and I am happy to commit to running a similar schedule to last year (1 or 2 GS's, 3 Masters, ? ATP500's etc).

Since Brisbane is still without a manager next week and Chennai currently has only 9 entries, we could transfer the Chennai entries to Brisbane and I would run Brisbane instead, so that you and Alex could run Sydney and Auckland the following week. Just a suggestion. :shrug:

Caio_Brasil
12-30-2009, 12:27 AM
In this first moment I think we should try to run all the tournaments. Until Chennai starts I think we could reach 12 entries. I don't like the idea of cancelling tournaments, although it will happen some time. :scared:

We need other opinions anyway, doing only Brisbane and Doha is an idea. Let's wait till Friday and then we can decide it.

I think 13 picks for 28-players draw is a bit too much
people have to pick almost 50% of matches and if there are any withdrawals (like in Marseille this year) it's even over 50.
in comparison, in GS it's around 20% ; ATP1000 - 30%, ATP250 with 32 - 40%

I know it's not time to discuss this case but I'm writing now before I forget ;)

That's a good point, in the off-season we should discuss this better and fixing a percentage seems a good solution in my opinion.

Or, the ATP could end with the 28-draw shitty idea :p

According to the PAW Rules (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=83408) this is how picks are posted

5. How and where do I post my PAW’s (Predictions)?

Once the tournament that you have committed begins (keep reading for instructions of how to commit), go to the PAW thread located in that particular tournament forum (ie if it is Dubai, go to the Dubai tournament forum and then click the PAW Dubai thread). You may also send your picks by PM to the current PAW manager of that tournament.

6. What happens when mtf.com is slow or down?
In this extreme situation, you may post your PAWS on alternative forum (pawforum) http://www.pawforum.ovh.org
Do remember to include your mtf.com handle.

and you have given your e-mail. I think this is done with TT but not with PAW.

Good luck with managing.

Thanks Aenea, that forum seems to just have advertising for Erectile Dysfunction drugs etc... is it a problem for me to accept email? It would be easier for me.

I don't know. You asked if everything was OK I told you where you've strayed from the rules. Last time when as a manager I strayed from the rules I got into arguments with some players and since then I am sticking to the rules. If a picky player asked you why you accepted picks via e-mail when it was not allowed by the rules what would you reply? Hopefully not that this way it is easier for you.

Whatever. You are the manager it is your decision. Good luck.

Unfortunately, the PAW Emergency Forum has been infiltrated by outsiders, but robuś is keeping an eye on it and is deleting the rubbish every few weeks.

e-mail or alternate forum options are just in case (if MTF is down)
pick by PM is option just for the last one, for those who still can win

there are details, don't worry jervisjames and keep doing good work :yeah:

The devil is in the details, Greg. Clear the rules, add the details so when I am asked why I am doing this or that I can quote the paragraph in the rules.

Just realized that we need a manager for Washington. Anyone?

Remember that no managers can take consecutive weeks, so Hamstory, jrm, Wojtek and I aren't able to do so.

Thanks in advance,

Caio

I can run St.Petersburg and London.

I have just learned that I have to travel away from home on Thursday 25th November and Friday 26th November which falls right in the middle of the London ATP WTF's. Therefore I would be very grateful if someone else could take over the management of this final PAW tournament of the year.

If there is no-one else to take over then I will manage it but there would be no updates during these two days.

Thanks
