Surely Nalby would get a Wild card to Sydney or Auckland? When do we hear about wild cards?

Nalby will get a wild-card, it was written again in the Gasquet article.

On the Auckland website, his participation was confirmed already a couple of weeks ago. (It's also on his official page.)
It doesn't say anything about giving him a wild card but that's obviously what they'll do.

Nalbandian could probably have a far better protected ranking, but he maybe thought he could get in directly and preferred keeping it for next tournaments.

There is a clear mistake in that list. Crivoi never reached that high a ranking:

14 Crivoi, Victor ROU 48

Unfortunately he is out of the Top 100 again :sobbing:

He'll get a protected ranking but he'll only be able to use it for 8 tournaments.
So why "waste" one of those 8 opportunities on a smaller tournament if you can get a wild card?
(Same goes for the Copa Telmex, by the way.)

(Same goes for the Copa Telmex, by the way.)Rules for protected rankings are changing for 2010 so Nalbandian may have more than eight entries, but still no sensible player will use a protected ranking to enter if he can get a wild card. Most player have to use their protected rankings for the required tournaments since most wild cards go to local players.

I didn't know that the rules are changing, so thanks for the hint. Any idea where I can find out more?
But yeah, I guess he'll be happy about any wild card he can get.

Give a WC to ljubicic, he will win this tournament if he plays!

Ljubicic isn't playing 1st week of the season and if he doesn't get the last Kooyang spot, i would think he would be interested in a WC here. Doubt he wants to go in the AUS open with no matches.

I disagree I think the tournament organisers have constructed a good line-up for the amount of money they've got to spend on players. Remember its a 250 event so chances of getting top 10 players are highly unlikely unless it's their home tournament or they're given big incentives to play in the tournament.

The Sydney tournament occurs the same week and a lot of players in the top 30 favour that event as its a shorter flight to Melbourne for AO plus they don't have to pass through customs so less hassle for them. I think the line-up here is as strong as Sydney is and with the Bryan Brothers representing the doubles here I think it will provide a great week of tennis!

This tournament would've probably got Del Potro back if he hadn't won US Open, but now he'll play at Kooyang for the big bucks and you can't blame him :)

I'm really excited about this tournament only a few weeks to go now!!! :)

i agree.. the thing i dont like the most is that the top four seeds are Ferrer,Robredo, almagro and Ferrero. These guys come here almost every year and are incredibly boring to watch

Well you won't have to watch them in first round; as the top four seeds they all get byes. That means at least four Spaniads in the last 16... Personally I hope for a repeat of the 2007 final: Ferrer vs. Robredo!

Nalbandian is already getting a WC

that doesn't mean he's out from the alternate list

if he enters directly, his WC would go to another player.
