Who are you, Sodafans?

Please introduce yourself if you are SoderKing's fan :)

So, let me start - I am Dana, I am from Kazakhstan. I am gloryhunter - shame on me. I started following Robin after RG09. Of cource I saw him before but I was never his fan, just liked some of his matches. But he really impressed me on RG and my impression wasn't spoiled after this tournament.
I love Robin's attacking style (mea culpa - I hate "protective tennis") and love his attitude :)

:wavey: Pleased to meet you Dana.

So I am Rose from London - my confusing flag is for my partner who is Serbian, and for my favourite player, Novak Djokovic.

I first saw Robin play in Hamburg about 4 years ago, and was impressed by his feisty attitude. I like the way he says what he thinks, and isn't afraid to be himself. I've also been fortunate to meet him (and Jenni) a few times at tournaments in Europe, and he seems like a really nice, genuine guy. Apart from Novak and Robin, I like many players including all those in my signature.

Away from tennis, I am a Social Worker looking after abused kids in London. I live with my partner, have a 13-year-old step-daughter and 5 cats :cat: I love reading, rock music, travelling, I am vegetarian, do voluntary work for animal charities, and spend far too much money going to far too many tennis tournaments :o

Nice to meet you, Rose!
OK, think I habe to say more about myself.
I am 27, I am programmer, working in GIS (geo-information systems) in kazakh city Atyrau (western part of Kazakhstan). Unfortunately my cat live with my parents in my native town.
My favourite tennisists are Tsonga(the one and the only!), Soderling and Kei Nishikori (he is so cute and so small, think it's my mother instinct there  )

Hi Dana and Rose,

:wavey:

I am Tim and I'm an Independent Middle Tier SOA Specialist and Software Engineer. My direct relatives are from Killarney, Ireland, but I travel for my livlihood for short term technical contracts. I am about as independent as a person can be, thus my love of my 2 cats, and players like Nole, Nalby, Rafa and Robin. I'm a long time Nalby fan and first started posting in Tennis Forums in 2006 in the now defunct davidnalbandian.com Forum. That forum is now gone, but it's coolest member creates a blogspot that is miles better anyway. Cue another shameless plug for Julia's great Daveed website (http://www.vamosdavid.com/) :p: http://www.vamosdavid.com/

This is strange...I was a David and Rafa fan for many years because they we're the only two players that made tennis interesting by daring to challenge Mr. Federer. Without these two players, tennis might have become so boring and predictable, I would have stopped watching it. When the charasmatic and independently minded Nole arrived on the scene, he became my second favorite player next to Nalby. But while being a Nalby fan, I was first saddened by the loss of David's form after the 2007 Madrid and Paris Masters, that ultimately led to him getting the hip surgery that he has spent the past 7-8 months recovering from. I was not sure he was going to ever return to tennis, and it remains to be seen whether he will compete at the same level. This left me as a Nole and Rafa fan. At the same time, I was growing frustrated with Nole for not "being himself" and always floating under radar since the US Open Fiasco in 2008.

I noticed Robin's talent many years ago when he played Henman in the 3rd round of Wimbledon in 2003, and being a Nalby fan, I was obviously impressed with this guy's game because Robin and David have had some epic matches, including an unforgettable 5 set thriller in Davis Cup action last year that may be one of the most fascinating matches of David's career (the one where he cried after finally beating Robin). And then Robin and David met in the Stockholm Open final last year. With David out, I was surprised, but not shocked as most when I saw the Rafa match. That obviously intrigued me, but it was the matches after that one against Kolya, where he smoked him 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 and then his epic comeback in the 5 set RG Gonzo Semi-Final that cemented my fascination with his game and with his personality (towel over the head on all changeovers :haha::haha:).

Maybe it would be fair to say that no other player reminded me of me more than Robin Soderling (same identification thing with Nole, Rafa and Nalby), and that realization increased once I started reading about him, following and watching all his matches from RG to Bastad to the WTFs. I also have been reading about Jenni, following them on twitter. So what a journey it has been becoming a Robin fan, and I never would have dreamed it would have been this rewarding a trip to be his fan. Once Nalby comes back, I will be pulling for him as always, but I found myself cheering for Robin over any other players in the U.S. Open and beyond, and that included Nole and Rafa and it will probably include Nalby too....but I'll have to wait and see on that one as I have followed David since 2002.

Hey Everyone!
My name is Ty and i'm from Winnipeg which is a beautiful city in the country of Canada and I am one of the few long time Soderling fans!
Robin has been my favorite player since 2004 when he won his first ATP Tournament in Lyon...His big berve and punishing groundstrokes were really nice to watch and I always knew that he could be a major threat on the ATP tour and I guess i was right! ;)
I have been through many ups and downs with robin in the past...with all the choking and injuries and not living up to Robin`s full potential was really getting me mad. That was until Robin took down Rafa in four and all the sudden there was new life...Robin as we all know would go onto the finals where he would lose to Roger...and after that his whole career changed! (Thanks to Magnus!)

Anyways, Im really glad we have our own forum now and LETS GO ROBIN!!! :)

I like Robin since 2006 when I saw him in Davis Cup against Brazil, but I only started cheering more strongly for him at the beginning of this year when I started posting in his thread (and hopefully I believe I brought him luck). Sderling is top 10 material and deserves to be there for a long time. ;)

Hi Everyone :)
I'm Christina from Brisbane, Australia and have a ridiculous obsession with swedes that makes absolutely no sense to most Aussies. Been a fan of Robin forever primarily due to him being Swedish, but always thought there was something special about him (even though the other swedish players used to say he wasn't very nice - it was always him just being shy though! people need to give him a chance). magnus was my first swedish fascination so now that he's coaching robin ive been really into it this year - since the first tournament of the year in BRISBANE.
im turning 24 next month and have been following tennis my whole life and just today i got my final uni results and i am graduating WOOOHOOOO :D

One of the other thing that I like about Soda is that his style of play is similar to mine (keeping on its proportions). I have a top spin forehand and a flat backhand like Soda, also I hate to volley in my backhand side. I cant say my serve is as good as his, however. Im an agressive baseliner created on clay but playng alot in hardcourts, so last year I liked to do a paralell of his progress and mine xaxa.

Hi guys,

It's great that Soderling has own forum, it was about time.
I'm Mikhail from Bulgaria. For over five years I used to make the Soderling's lone fan site (it was at www.soderling.net at the time), but had to give it up at the beginning of last year. The free time I had was not enough and the site needed a major overhaul, which I didn't manage to do, so unfortunately had to close it after all these years.

Good to have the community here, so we can connect with other fans somehow.

And apart from the above, I'm 31 and work as a IT project manager for Coca Cola. Have also own site at www.kenanoff.com and do some blogging (in Bulgarian though)

I have my hands full following Verdasco and Djokovic so rigorously, but I always have time for Robin as well. :) Here's to an even better 010 than 09 hopefully. :rocker2:

Christina, have you ever heard of Robert Forster and Grant McLennan of the band The Go-Betweens, from Brisbane, Australia? I was the web master for their fan web page and ran a mailing list for them from 1994-2000. We had Robert Forster do a live fan chat in 1995, at a time when that was a most unusual thing to do. Our little group of cult fans was much responsible for them getting back together, and it included David Nichols of the Brisbane band The Cannanes (I also helped on those web pages along with starting the Randall Lee Ashtray Boy web site).

My style of play is a poor man's version of El Ray David Nalbandian, agressive baseliner with my strongest shot being the two handed backhand. I also am just an average volleyer, and severely dislocated my shoulder playing basketball when I was 14, so don't have the power serve. Robin has a killer two-handed backhand as well:

Hi TMJordan,

:wavey:

I see the ACC voting for bracket 2 comes out in about in 10 minutes TMJordan. You are seeded #41 in this section of the draw and have a tough match against CescAndyKimi. How do you feel about the ACC? Are you hoping to lose asap, win a few rounds, couldn't care less?

As a Sod fan, do I do you a service by voting for you, CescAndyKimi or not voting at all?

This ACC thing is the most confusing contest I have seen. Everyone I've spoken to about it seems to have an ambiguous answer to the questions above. They wouldn't mind in one way to get some recognition, but probably don't want to go too far in the tourney. It looks like losing in the R64 or R32 is a complimentary result.

I haven't been able to check it out or even pop into the Castle for a short visit today to see who the natives are speculating on as favorites. I'm poping in on my second laptop while I work remotely via VPN. :toothy:

Did you see the brackets (http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=343338&tclass=ACC) that Jeff (out_here_grinding) created? :yeah:

http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=343338&tclass=ACC

Did you catch my "minimalist" approach to voting yesterday? It was because everyone I asked who was in contention that I knew told me "yea, I don't care if you vote for me at all, but you can vote against me too because I don't care about winning, or you can not vote all. It doesn't matter to me even though my last 10 posts have been on that topic.............." :haha:

I'm Nadine, 18, currently living in London, born to Lebanese and Iraqi parents, but born and raised up in Sweden. I've met or chatted to most people here and I think most have seen me around. I watched bits of the Nadal-Soderling Wimbledon epic and that's when I first discovered him, I think - can't even remember now. Naturally, I have a thing for Swedes so Soderling was on the list since I found out about him. What a breakthrough year he's had. =] I remember watching Soderling-Baghdatis this year in their AO match, and whilst I was really happy for Baggy I wasn't really optimistic about Robin's chances for success following that tournament. I was proven wrong big time and glad to have been.

I've seen him live twice and both times it was a joy to watch him in action. First time was Wimbledon 2009 R1 against Muller. He was in a different league after clinching the second set. I remember that point when Muller hit a big inside out forehand and Robin had to chase down the ball - he nearly ended up in the crowd. I was sitting near the first three rows so I could see his little smile.

The second time was in WTFs this year against Djokovic. Really enjoyed watching Robin show his full arsenal and of course the lovely interview in the end with Petchy.

And I can't go to sleep. So happy Soderling finally has his own forum though. :speakles:

To be honest Tim I haven't been paying much attention to ACC. In fact, I've really cut down on MTF this past week. I didn't really want to post but I can't go to sleep and was so pleasantly surprised to see the Soderling forum finally there. Thought it was never going to happen... :sobbing:

Watching tennis live is great. You realise how hard (and flat in Robin's case) they hit the ball. He kept hitting aces in the match against Muller and I applauded everyone of them - my hands were red after the match. I swear it must have been over 40 of them, and looking at the speed gun he hit them over 130mph regularly and consistently. Such a great weapon.

Well, 'buddyholly" (who I know next to nothing about except from comments in the ACC) beat you and from the comments I read, it was like you had won the match. ;) That's why I've been confused and I'm only going to absurdly post my votes if at all at this point.

Muller had been considered a dangerous floater too, so I remember that was a scary first round oppoenent. Muller was the one who gave Fed a hell of a match at the U.S. Open in the QFs in 2008. And then Robin lost the first set in a tiebreaker, I was biting my nails. But then he finished off Muller 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 at the end, playing himself back into form. Great match!

I would have loved to have seen the Soderling-Djokovic match in London. That may be one of his top 5 highlight matches from 2009 since Nole was the only player other than Rogi that Robin had never beaten:

I thought Ichiban1920 was GlennMirnyi, but then Ichiban got banned too. Actually, Ichiban1920 reminds me of a dude named "Crackbillionaire" back in the old tennisdot com days. And GlennMirnyi doesn't remind me of "Crackbillionaire" other than saying "Nadull" all the time, so hmmmm....Everko the Alien....Glenn Myrnyi?

Need to do research on this one and read some of Everko's posts. For some reason, I just always skipped over reading them....if they are the same it should be Everko vs. Burrow in Semis.

Hi Tim, Sorry I've never heard of the band. But I wouldnt take offense - I havn't heard of most of the bands in the charts at the moment let alone back then

:speakles:

Hi Nadine :wavey: It was great to meet with you at O2 last week. Hope you are well.

As for ACC  My views are the same as Karin's to be honest. Ah well - back to work :wavey:

We are all arseclowns, every single one of us on planet earth! :worship:  Always learning, if too sure of ourselves, we are off, if seeing all sides, we are confused. If trying to vacillate between the two.....well, never mind....

Yes, it is Tim, Saulo. You are cool as hell in my eyes for what little that might be worth. ;)

You are as Sodal ("A True Rebel/A True Saint/A True Individual" often fan of Soderling, Nadal, Nalby) as it gets, Getta! No problem at all. You are free to speak your mind without it being taken as anything but that. I believe one must speak their truth and be honest to oneself and the world. That is the right thing to do. Popularity is fleeting; self-respect is for a lifetime. Timing is important too so that you aren't misunderstood.

Yea, I was showing mock fury at Saulo for the Karin vote (I realize Getta voted for Serenidad) and mock fury at you for Mimi comment (Saulo did nothing towards Mimi at all); I just included you both while reading the first page of the new 2nd Quarter ACC voting because in my short time here both Mimi and Karin have seemed like the two of the kindest posters on MTF, so it comes off as kind of amusing for a newbie to see those two included in so many of the votes. I thought the laughing after I said "shame on you two" would show I was kidding and not judging at all.
Rock on, Getta! :rocker2:This is just the arseclown fest!

P.S. I'm considering protesting this section of the draw on Karin's behalf. This may get me some bad reps even though it is just a joke and do something different for 3rd Quarter of draw. Here would be my sign. Trying to get up the nerve.....so new here and humour might not be misunderstood yet.....so probably won't do something like this yet...but wanna do it...

They barely ever made the charts. The rock critics loved them and they had a loyal cult following. They didn't make much money though. They split up just when they we're almost becoming big and had a single hit the top 100, and supported REM in their 1989 tour. I'm an underground music nut and love many bands from Australia and New Zealand (especially Flying Nun label bands from the latter). I love the Saints, Moodists, Ed Kupper, the Laughing Clowns, the Triffids, The Clean, The Bats, etc. None of thse bands make the charts.

Nastia, she is so beuuuuuutiful and those photos are too. She has the big innocent eyes like a Maine Coon and bushy tail. Does she have some Norwegian/Maine Coon in her? Does she make a normal "meow" noise or does she chirp and trill?

I have 2 cats, my other cat is a black haired Maine Coon and her name is Phoebe:

Thanks, Nastia.

He has a pair of the cutest, most innocent eyes I have seen. He isn't a Maine Coon/Norwegian if his "meow" is loud and confident. My big girl has the highest pitched little chirp and if she does "meow" it is really high, soft and sweet. My smaller Siamese cat Athena, the one in my Avatar, in contrast has a loud and confident "meow". It's quite funny having the large and strong kitty with sweet chirps and smaller cat being agressive and having a loud, rumbling "meow". But their voices fit their breed descriptions perfectly. Here is a Maine Coon and its voice (much like Phoebe although her voice is even higher pitched!):

You should see how Phoebe acts.. she gets this quizzical look on her face that something should sound like her and walks around my laptop and starts pawing at the screen. Athena also jumps out of where she is hiding to find the new cat, but doesn't act as though it is something familiar.

Well, Nalby is still an athlete after all. Nalby is the best, you can take it as a compliment. My silly cat Athena at my pc has been my avi for a long time; on a different tennis forum too. It is an inside joke, because she has shut off my laptop 100s, maybe 1000s of times at this point and I am always pushing her off it. I tend to the "bad" thing, they say, and I have one of those sit up cushions on my bed for reading, and I'm a slob, so everything I like is somewhere on my bed including books, both laptops, books, candy, etc. So the laptop is warm to her Siamese belly and I am constantly fighting with her and pushing her off while I'm typing. Nothing works on headstrong kitties like these.

Two is more enough for me to handle. They both go running around the house destroying things. Five or more than five!!!

I have followed Robin closely since his break through performance where he reached the final in Stockholm open against Mardy Fish.

I'm much into sports in general, besides tennis I particularly like downhill skiing, although not competetive - just for fun.

hi everyone and nice to meet you all!

Realized I never presented myself because honestly this thread seemed quite dead and now it's off season now anyway....

I'm Max, 27 years old. Lives in southwest Sweden. Work as a programmer.

BIG tennis fan and played myself (until about 10 years ago) but not anymore. I do play squash sometimes for fitness and hey at least it's a racket sport.

Always followed the swedish players and my favorites used to be Enqvist, Norman and Pim-pim and as they retired/got injured only Soderling remains. I always liked his style and ballsy play. His win over Nadal in 2009 is still is probably my best tennis memory as it was so unexpected and so awesome. I probably rate that as one of the best sport moments ever.

To me great tennis is about power and aggressive play. Huge serves, big forehands, big backhands. It's about taking your chances on critical points and to be brave. All those things that make you go "wow I would never be able to play like that or be that brave under pressure" To me Soderling is one of those guys. He truly is an amazing athlete and got a great attitude on court. Is also very under-appreciated (in Sweden and everywhere) so I feel a bit of a need to give him some props internationally.

Except tennis I'm also a huge hockeyfan (yes ice-hockey) but mostly of NHL and of course of the swedish national teams in the WJC, WC and Olympics. I also follow MMA and boxing to some extent but not as much as tennis. Football (soccer) I follow mostly because many friends are huge fans. I've never gotten that into it. Find it boring and often unsportsmanlike with all the diving going on.

You'd probably seen me around the general message mostly but I'd say this Soderling forum is one of the prime sources of info about him. His own webpage and facebook/twitter are just terribly outdated.

We'll see how active I am in 2012, depends a bit on my workload but lets hope Soderling can bounce back. It's been some dark months now but after rain comes sunshine!

Big Robin Soderling fan here,

I'm from Canada, I've been watching Soderking play since he beat Rafa at French Open 2009. Thats when I first noticed him and I have been a fan of him ever since. My favorite match from him is his match against Michael Llodra at the Shanghai Masters.

I love Robin's ballbashing aggresive style. Its fun to watch. It seems rare to see somebody play with that much aggression and risk taking and succeed! I play tennis myself and I aspire to play his style! Its so awesome.
