Djokovic poised to overtake Nadal

I would be shocked if Nadal passes Federer for No. 1 in London next week.

I will not be surprised at all if Djokovic overtakes Nadal for No. 2.

I think Nadal overtaking Fed is just as unlikely as Djokovic overtaking Nadal.

Most probably , Fed'll end the year at top spot. The title though can still be Djoko's or Federer's or Murray's depending on his condition post injury. I'll be surprised if Rafa won any of his round robin matches.

very very intriguing WTF indeed.

just had a look at the current ATP rankings:

and by next sunday, the following ranking changes could happen amongst the top 5:

A)fed could lose the no.1 ranking to rafa. (945 pts diff)
B)rafa could lose the no.2 ranking to nole. (1,295 pts diff)
C)nole could lose the no.3 ranking to muzza. (1,280 pts diff)
D)muzza could lose the no.4 ranking to JMDP. (645 pts diff)

bring on the matches already i say!!!

That Guerry Smith is assuming Nole will win WTF easily. That is quite a big an assumption. Personally... yes, I believe it's MORE probable that Djoko takes the #2 spot than Nadal becoming #1. But I still don't think it'll happen.

This sounds eerily familiar to something ... January... 2008?

Yeah..

Hmmm. I wouldn't say it's unlikely he'll manage to achieve #2 at the WTF - though it's possible.

At the start of 2010 - yeah, I'd say he has a good chance (though, he did this year too).

Nole has had the chance to reach #2 more than once, I'm not very sure if he's gonna do it or not right now, I still remember that loss in the MM tournament just before AO

If Feds & Nads both crash out early at the WTF, Djoko will have quite a shot to take over BOTH of them at AO2010.

Davydenko overtake roddick aswell?

i was only referring to the top 5 guys in the previous post.

but yeh, davy overtaking a-rod is a real possibility as well with a-rod MIA in london, and the current pts diff between the two is 780 points.

seems like a bit of a long shot, but nando and soderling have a good shot at overtaking a-rod as well.

Novak will be number #1 in 2010.

Everyone knows: ultimately there's #1...and then, everyone else. After #1, the only thing that matters? Slams.

If Novak does reach the final, I don't think he will defeat Roger again or Andy in his hometown.

Its likely that we're simply going to see 2007 final top three as the top three of 2009.

It would be good for tennis if the top 2 changes, since the top 2 players are already established superstars maybe it would be best if players like Djokovic/Murray/Del Potro boost their mainstream profiles by occupying the top 2 for a while :yeah: it would be good for tennis, which to non-tennis people is still considered the Fedal show and not much more.

Although barely important as far as history and media are concerned, the number two ranking is very important when it comes to Grand Slam (and Masters Series) draws. I'm sure Djokovic would like to ensure he automatically ends up on the other side of the draw as Federer at the Austalian Open.

I personally don't think the top few will change order before the end of the year. However, Djokovic has got an excellent chance to rise in the rankings after the Australian Open.

Yep the Australia Open has a lot of potential of rankings change, because both Parera and Federer are defending massive points, while Murray, Djokovic and Del Potro are not. Although it seems unlikely that Parera and Federer will lose early :yeah:

Djoker has had a gazillion chances to overtake both Fed and Nadal quite a few times and always comes up short. So talk is cheap. And just not surpassing Fed and Nadal for a month or two and then reliquishing it. Djoker needs to overtake them and have an extended amount of time on top. To do so, hes going to have to win some slams

Djoko will surely overtake Nadal first half of next year, as Nadal has a crazy amount of points to defend then. Over 6k of his 9205 total: 2k Aus, 1k Rome, 1k Monte Carlo, 1k Indian Wells, 600 Madrid, 180 Miami, 500 Barcelona, 300 Rotterdam. Surely if he's thinking of a decent length of career - and of being fit by the US Open - surely he can't be playing anything like that number of matches next year.

Of course, good chance for Nadal to take it back at RG/Wimbly though :-) Then again, although Nadal defends 180pts there, Djoko didn't do much there this year either (only 450).

Unless Nadal is wearing and tearing to go at the beginning of next year. Who knows what Level Nadal will be at starting at the USO. Nadal is going to be a force during the first half of the season. He has proven he can win at the French, AO and Wimbeldon. So we will have to wait and see. Maybe Nadal is saving himself to start fresh in 2010
