I'd say that more than half of the NBA and NFL are better athletes than Federer....and obviously guys like Muhammad Ali as well.

As far as being the "most well-coordinated"....i'd say most professional boxers are just as coordinated, but you have an argument for Federer there seeing as how tennis requires a good balance of coordination everywhere from physical to hand-and-eye.

Yepperlicious if it was about athleticism I'd say most of the NBA is more athletic than Federer, and most of many of the track and field events would feature more athleticism, and many other sports....

Ken Rosewall- That is why he was able to play so well for so long. Ken was not a greater athelete than Roger but had very similar qualities. Roger just happens to be considerably larger which gives him the advantage over Ken. Of course, we are talking tennis players here not basketball etc..

well yeah, once he got injured, there was not much to do but eat and party... eh, tough life heh?

zidane was to me really top of tops, just total class in every sense. only true play-maker in modern, fast, industrial football. one who holds all the strings of one team. juventus with him (when lippi was in charge, when they played 3 consecutive CL finals, won one I think) was like a computer video game, like a living organism. I didnt root for them at the time, perhaps because they were always winning  but it was a great time, and zidane was the man responsible.

I think Federer should definitely be in the discussion. We could look at the most coordinated athletes in a generation or by decade (of which you would be slightly moronic to say Federer isn't one of) and then have a big discussion regarding all the names put in the pot.

Federer is definitely special in this regard.

also how about comparing apples with apples. why are you wasting your time comparing Fed to soccer stars who play a specialized team sport with other soccer players on the field. which other team sport will it be next? go ahead and start comparing him to Lebron James now.

at the very least, at least try to compare him to athletes from other individual sports if you simply must get caught up in blind worshipping.

The thread is talking about coordination. Whether the sport is individual or team based has no bearing on an evaluation of an athlete's coordination. A better objection to the discussion would involve the fact that there is no objective measure for coordination.

well actually it does make a difference. a massive difference to be exact.

some sports just do not require that much coordination.

once again, dont compare an athlete from an individual sport to one from a team sport where tasks are fewer and more specialized.

I think racket sports, on the whole, have stuff like soccer, NFL, and NBA beat. Players in the latter sports don't have to coordinate the movement of their entire bodies with the movement of a foreign object, and especially in the case of the NFL and NBA, it's the hands, which are probably more naturally coordinated than the feet.

Someone mentioned squash, which is arguable, but I think tennis incorporates more running full sprint while still applying similar hand eye and probably more full-body, though I find the geometry of squash a lot more difficult. Stuff like pentathlon is one-at-a-time... by definition not coordinating very much. Polo is probably one sport that takes more coordination than tennis.

Either way, it's no doubt Fed is near the top. Watch '05 clips of him moving on the court, then add in the hand-eye timing and control.
