Who will join the first title club in 2010? Congrats Kukushkin

2008 had 11 first time winners and 2009 had a huge total of 5 and as usual a couple of bolters in there.

2010

Name Venue Surface

John Isner (USA) Auckland Hardcourt
Ernests Gulbis (LAT) Delray Beach Hardcourt
Andrei Golubev (KAZ) Hamburg Clay
Viktor Troicki (SRB) Moscow Indoor Hardcourt
Mikhail Kukushkin (KAZ) St.Petersburg Indoor Hardcourt

I believe Leo Mayer has the potential to snatch a 250 somewhere, rather on hard than clay.

He's the one i will follow closely in 2010 as he has the game to bother higher ranked players, he just need to accumulate experience.

My secret hope is for a serious break through for Grigor Dimitrov, but he'll need to book a couple of challenger titles first, so the reasonable expectations for an ATP tittle should be for 2011 for him.
Still, even more shocking things have happened in tennis, so why not earlier? :)

Was any of the 2009 new winners on your list from last year?

I went other last year and thought Lu might step up but he's been very ordinary.

This year I've gone for Tipsy (made a final or 2 this year?) and Isner. I think big John may sneak in with one of the MM's between the AO and IW.

Isner will probably win a title in the U.S. at some point next year and I expect Cuevas to win something in February.

Tipsarevic I think has the potential, but he has for years now.

Gulbis

Cuevas will snag a 250 clay event I think

Dougie
11-17-2009, 03:41 PM
It´s actually kinda weird that Bolelli and Tipsarevic really haven´t won any titles. Anyway, I think Troicki should grab his first sometime soon. And Cuevas has a good chance at some of the smaller clay events, like Umag, for example.

I would like to see Isner win his first title. Granted he isn't where he needs to be in terms of talent, if he could improve his footwork and work the kinks out of his game, I think he's capable of taking a 250 title next year.

Isner should also win one around August-September.

I think it would be Isner but would be pleased if Mayer (not likely) and Cuevas got a title. If Cuevas came to Houston he could have a chance if the field was per usual but Gonzalez is going to be there in 2010 as well as Sam who can play not bad for a Yank on clay so I don't think there will be a reapeat of a WTH winner like Fish or Marcel.

such a waste of talent.really shame on him.he pushed Fed to the limits in AO08(even murray couldn't do that so far in GS)and also had beaten many top players through past few years but he couldn't win a MM tournement so far.I'm starting to believe it's just a disteny.

Horatio Caine

Looking at that list now, I would really give up on Zeballos, Bolelli and Kubot. Kubot has had his peak earlier this year, and has over-performed tbh. Bolelli is going absolutely nowhere, and Zeballos was never all that good a player. However, out of those three, I would tip Zeballos as the more likely to bounce back next year (top 75 is a decent ranking for him), whilst many of us are in agreement that Kubot will lose many places. Bolelli can justify his current top 125 status, although he can go a lot higher (as he has done previously) if he is willing to put in the hard work.

I'm also tempted to give up on Leo Mayer, although that might be a little premature as his back is still bothering him. Hopefully he can be fit for much of 2011, and we'll see what he is capable of.

Tipsarevic really should win a title at some point, as NOLE 107 suggests. Inconsistency is letting him down, but you can point to many players who have suffered from this to varying degrees and still won titles. It should only be a matter of time, although he probably needs a weak event (e.g. late-season indoors).

Cuevas has rebounded nicely this year, although the fact that his favoured surface is clay could actually harm his chances of a title imo. Even in the weaker '250' events there are still some half-decent dirtballers, and Pablo does lack a little consistency for results.
