Could be plagiarism, deliberate influence or just coincidence, I'm going to post here a few songs that I have noticed they do sound similar. You are welcome to post contributions.

Starting with the most recent scandal, Coldplay vs. Joe Satriani.

Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson recently released songs (both co-written by Ryan Tedder) which were exactly the same. He said they aren't the same, but I think he is telling lies.

Lie to Me by Silverchair IS Territorial Pissings by Nirvana.

Reminds me more of Tourette's tbh, although the part when there's only drum, bass and Daniel Jones singing sounds a lot like TP.

Think Zepp were original when they wrote Stairway to Heaven? They toured with an outfit called Spitit for a while. Listen to their song Taurus, some parts sound very familiar... :tape:

Others that spring to mind:

The chord progression from Eagle Eye Cherry's save tonight rips off Iggy Pop's Passenger.

Iggy's Lust for Life was ripped off by Jet on Are You Gonna be my Girl. It's quick sickening how many millions they made off that song just by ripping off a famous riff.

Silverchair's Leave Me Out is Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath with a slight variation.

Seems like I'm picking on the Aussies now but every Wolfmother song I've ever heard sounds like Sabbath's Sabbra Cadabbra.

Lamb of God's laid to Rest is a copy of Testament's Into the Pit.

I always thought the Champions League theme used on ITV's coverage was quite similar to Handel's Zadok the Priest.

I should never post in music threads, my ignorance of modern music is always rapidly exposed.

http://www.kieran.keegan.btinternet.co.uk/ZZTop/zz_top_history_2.htm

The music of "La Grange" is actually just a re-working of a Slim Harpo number that was also done by The Stones as "Hip Shake" but it proved a breakthrough for ZZ Top. As the song rose up the charts, rumours circulated that "Canned Heat" were about to sue the band for allegedly plagiarising "Fried Hockey Boogie".

Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice

I remember an interview, where Vanilla Ice tries to deny it and comes up with some lame excuse about how his is slightly different. As if.

The Shadows
Atlantis
Wonderful Land

Hmmm really?

The ones I always thought to me similar sounding were FBI and The Boys because they have the same intro and to a lesser extent Foot Tapper and Shindig, but not Atlantis and Wonderful Land

(and I don't mean those similarities in a bad way because The Shadows have been my favourite band for years)

Listen to Australian dance duo Madison Avenue's LP. You'll know all about songs that sound similar. :tape:

I know it's that whole 60s ballad throwback, but I still pair up the two.

Love this game  soo many over the years, hard to recall at one time without writing down...

Love is all around and Back for good, those were hits (the cover version of the former) at almost the same time, quite funny IMO.

Oasis made mockery of their fans with doing Wonderwall twice - D'ya know what I mean or smth like was the name of the copy.

Roxette's Listen to your heart was a carbon copy of some other song I don't remember atm, think Gessle even went to court for that.

Robyn's Who's that girl (original song title btw ;) ) is quite a ripoff of The Knife's Heartbeats.

Sweden's Bara hon älskar mig in Eurovision -97 was identical to Mitt i ett äventyr which was 2nd in the Swedish qualies -93 or so.

I'm trying to play Bye Bye Love by the Everly at the moment.

Don't you think their intro riff looks like ZZ Top's La Grange (and by extension Canned Heat's Fried Hockey Boogie)?

Speaking of Everybody hurts. It starts off with the same chord plucked in the exact same way as Fluff by Black Sabbath:
