Good performance from Rafa. Tsonga blew it by missing his chances in the first set. Too many volleys especially were fucked up due to lazy footwork.

Rafa served well because Jo couldn't read the down the T serve. Hit the forehand well, and did what he does best which is keep getting the balls back.

Two things evident, Tsonga's return is actually quite solid, and his backhand down the line is very good, especially when Nadal hits those short forehands repeatedly. Tsonga has got quite a career what with titles such as Bangkok and South Africa open, he should go into commentary now to round out a generally succesful life.

Safin is one of the greatest talents of all tennis history.
Andreev has a nice game, Soderling looks like an autist robot
Baghdatinho is pure talent is the player that has more similarities with marcelo rios at this times.

Bercy was played on 'immensely quick' carpet till 2007. The RU was called Nadal. Yes, he lost to Nalbandian. But maybe you should review your oppinion on Rafa being crap indoors. (Not that I hope you will, mind you, for you he's also crap outdoors and, as anyone wo has been watching tennis since 2005 will agree, he is only a moonballer. Yeah, of course. It also depends on Federer to be honest. I seriously don't think Federer will defend his points from early next year with how the competition is playing (and ofcourse how he seems to be playing at the moment). If Nadal is consistent and dominates the clay season completely, then he might very well be the new number one again. Federer seems to be declining very very fast.

I think he constructed quite a few points pretty well. He was let down big time by very poor volleying. Should have broke in the first set but a poor volley gave Rafa another chance in the rally. It was after about the 10th game that Rafa really grew in confidence and Tsonga's frustration was telling. Started to miss more first serves, and act stupid from then on, but that's also due to Rafa playing well.

He can lose some points and become #1 if Fed loses some more.

But I agree, he will probably not regain his #1 until June (RG) and before that he may even go down to #3. No shame in that.

However, things to note from this match.

A) Nadal is back. His FH down the line, his serve from 2008, his movement. 8 errors in a long, hard match. 28 winners! 12 points at the net!!! He may have bounced back even better than he was.
B) He can defeat heavy hitters on a fast court if he is in top form. Stop the carpet whinning, I would also prefer more variety but the present surfaces are these.
C) Given how the other top seeds are playing, he is my favourite to win the whole thing, and start the Masters only 300 points behind Federer.

Right, so Djokovic won't blow him off the court like Tsonga should have done? Tsonga had a chance to run away with the match early, he was absolutely brainless with about 100 routine missed returns, Nole will not miss those. Its been proven countless times when there is a decent opponent on the other side of Nadal on a fast surface he has no chance, of course unless it is Tsonga who accidentally missed the exit for his electroshock therapy.

Tsonga can volley pretty well... as long as the ball is not on his body. It was painfully obvious how Rafa noticed this at the end of the first set, and sent him many balls to the center which he failed to volley. He is very athletic and stretches like a cat, and he is very skilled with his stretched arm, but now with his wrist or feet. And I think he construct some points all right, but he is a very emotional player and that is a double edged weapon. He was very affected by the breaks.

tsonga just smacks the ball and runs in like a headless chicken whenever he feels he can put away a volley, theres no thought of how to expose nadals weaknesses, or to who hes actually playing.

nadal just let jo do his thing untill jo tripped himself up, which eventually came predictabley at the end of each set, as jo's shot selection got even more stupid.

Awful match from Tsonga.

Set up so many opportunities and worked hard in rallies to gain the upper hand, but for some reason played scared tennis when in the forecourt. Pushing your approach shot against Nadal is never going to get the job done, and Tsonga was made to look amateurish at the net, when we know he can volley well.

Maybe you could take up following cricket?)

No it wasn't.

The 2007 court was slower than this one and was a 'hard' surface.

Nadal has won one indoor title in his career.

tsonga just smacks the ball and runs in like a headless chicken whenever he feels he can put away a volley, theres no thought of how to expose nadals weaknesses, or to who hes actually playing.

nadal just let jo do his thing untill jo tripped himself up, which eventually came predictabley at the end of each set, as jo's shot selection got even more stupid.

Are we supposed to pretend that's how he always plays? Except for poor timing for such a remark, I could just as well pretend he always exposes his weaknesses and constructs points beautifully as he did at AO. The latter part, of course, unless construct a point has for a strange reason become synonymous with play defensive, period.

he played no different today than when he beat nadal at the oz open, the only difference being he couldn't miss that day.

he was still going for broke and running forward at will, but that day he just had everything work. that of course will happen from time to time when he slogs the forehand and they go in and his drop volleys go over and in, but the odds are always with nadal as pulling off that type of play against the very top players is low percentage.

with the way tsonga plays he will upset a top player every now and then, a section of this board will cream themsleves over how 'talented' he is, then he will go back to being exposed for a lack of anything reguarding a gameplan in the next few tournaments.

Tsonga said he wanted to play Nadal, and he got his wish realised. Nadal is now leading 4-1 the head to head.

Truth.

Best match Rafa has been played in some time. I especially liked the way he was the one with the clutch drop volleys. People who say he does nothing but push should be forced to watch this match Clockwork Orange-style.

In general he suddenly seemed to have found some power and aggression again. The question is whether he'll maintain it. A few times since returning to tour he's shown signs of improvement and then backslid.

Tsonga's volleying is hugely overrated because of that one masterful display in Australia. That night was fantastic, but it's receding into the past.

No, not in a tournament that used to be immensely quick indoor carpet.

Tsonga would be gone quicker on that immensely fast carpet. His movement sucks and his serve percentage when it mattered most was dismal too.

I should have known the "magic carpet" of surface excuses would return the minute Jo got beaten. It was in full effect at the start of Paris last year but somehow disappeared by the end of the tournament for some reason.

And Soderling lost today, too? Terrible news. If only he hadn't missed that drug test in Paris and had to do a press conference explaining himself, his piggyback moment of glory would be more legit. But I guess he's just dealing with injury, like other supposed dopers.

Funny that, how so many players -- Tsonga being a prime example -- have been sidelined by injury more than Nadal. You wouldn't know it from the hype around here.

Yesterday, Rafa played better than Wednesday, and today he played much better than yesterday!
After holding the serve from 0-40 down in the sixth game of the first set, he really raised up his level and it was a joy to see.
He served smart and his FH was the best I've seen in months. His footwork was near his best as well. Only his passing shots were inconsistent, but he hit some great passes.
Maybe he needed those two tough wins to get into groove this week. Now, can he sustain this level or raise it up even higher tomorrow? Hope he will! :D

"Nadull beats a mug!" <--- when Rafa beats them, aren't they all?

"Why do The French always bend over for him?!" <--- as do players from every single nation on earth. I know, difficult concept to grasp. Advanced Physics is much easier.

"Jo, what a mug/choker!" <--- already covered.

"Worst era in tennis!" <---said often by snot-nosed teenagers, watching tennis for all of 6 months and posting from their respective basements -- if older, worse, for they don't have the "youth is wasted on the young" as an excuse.

"Wonder how much Nadull paid Tsonga for that pitiful display!" <--- Nothing, that's how much he charges for a spanking.

"Way to rig the draw Uncle Tony!" <--- 'cept when he loses, of course.

"Moonballing clown with no talent wins, tennis loses!" <--- This when used to describe the toughest competitor on a tennis court since the days of Jimmy Connors, tells me all I need to know about the IQ of the posters in question. Room-temperature at best. In Celsius no less.

"I fell asleep watching Nadull!" <--- Drinking and drugging are not the best way to partake in sports. Not even as an spectator.

"Gutless Spaniards! Worship Nadull" <--- apparently, so does everyone else with a losing H2H against him. Basically, all ATP players.

"No talent mugboar, always lucky!" <--- 36 ATP titles 7 GS crowns by age 22. Yep, no talent at all.

Of course, all the above are just "jokes" and those of us that don't see it that way simply lack a "sense of humor." Or maybe those posting the comments are a bunch of immature, cave-dwelling brats with no interest in tennis other than hating and flaming one of the greatest players ever to grace a tennis court, on and off of it.

Meanwhile, Nadal plays the best tennis in months and dismantles the Ogre all the haters were counting on to "demolish Rafa as he rightfully deserves for the good of the game." One wonders what the "game" is, exactly? Hating Nadal is the obvious answer.

Well then, get a new hobby, or suck it. Because the kid's not going to go away any time soon. He's got a lot of trophies to bite and records to set before all is said and done.

Could you imagine if Nadal missed a drug test at Roland Garros or elsewhere, with all the innuendo thrown around by Soderling fans on this board? Deal with it.

Are you the morality police? All I see is you post rants about fans of players, I've never seen you actually comment on a tennis match.

Mug era. A weak Nadal gets to MS finals and semis left and right.

Then what does that make Roger who lost early in the tournament in this supposed weak era?

You can take that to the bank.take yourself to the bank, lock yourself in a vault, and throw the key down a drain.

And it's not even worth getting into.

Going back to that other topic, Ever since the news about Soderling "broke" in tennis news tickers, overshadowed by all of Agassi's dramatics and the Wickmayer/Malisse affairs, I've wondered if a thread should be devoted to it on dear old MTF GM.

Can you imagine the response?

But whatever, let Soderling continue to prove himself. Who knows, maybe he will. For now, he's the last unexpected RG finalist since Puerta.

Do you have a link to this news about Soderling missing the test? I am not able to find anything about this.

Here's one filtered from Swedish media (http://communities.canada.com/montrealgazette/blogs/opencourt/archive/2009/10/20/tennis-making-news-in-sweden.aspx)

If you Google "Soderling" and "missed test" you'll see it also showed up briefly on tennis.com's news ticker.

Here's one from a Swedish sports source (http://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/tennis/article5986475.ab).

Here's one (http://tennishasasteroidproblem.blogspot.com/2009/10/soderling-warned-for-missing-doping.html) from a blog devoted to the 99% of players are guilty perspective.

Anyway, I'm not saying he's guilty. You need to miss 3 tests to be penalized. Oudin had to switch hotels during USO craziness, so the hotel change has some validity. But I'd guess he had to speak up on it to keep it from being talked about more.

As I stated earlier, Rafa COULD win in straight sets...and he did. He played a VERY intelligent match...and was clutch time and time again. Served very well...with much variety...and kept the crowd and Tsonga at bay. Wonderful to see the French crowd again go home disappointed.

28 winners, 8 unforced errors, 82% first serves in in the 1st set (and won 74% of 2nd serve points in the match), plus it looked like his forehand was biting off the court much like the Aust Open. Also its the first time he's beat Tsonga in straight sets on hardcourt, the other meetings were close :yeah:

As I suspected, Rafa isn't stringing good matches together or building momentum. He hasn't since his return. I hope that changes in 2010.

The Tsonga match was satisfying but didn't mean that much. Tsonga is overrated.

If Rafa had built on the Tsonga win and beaten Novak today he might have had even more of a catharsis in Paris, one that might have helped at RG 2010. But he's just not even close to #1-level play.

Not much difference in Nadal's game in either match - the change today was Djokovic hit winners off Nadal's short rubbish, Tsonga stuck it in the net instead. Also, no choking for Djokovic at the end of each set (helps when you're winning so easily of course).

The H2H is 4-1, and 1-1 in slams  In the great scheme of things the AO SF was not the one that mattered, because Tsonga did not go onto to win the Australian Open. And obviously the defeat had no long lasting effect on Rafa.
