Good effort from Safin and a good match overall to finish it with. Good luck to Safin from here on out and his departure is a loss for tennis as a whole but it was the right time to go and another year probably wouldn't have been enjoyable.

A few really fun points with typically good BH's from Safin a few trick shots from Del Potro and huge FH's of course.

Actually showing some emotion in the end and I'm sure he is both happy and sad at this point.

No matter what people say about under acheiveing or whatever, 2 slams, #1 and a whole host of other achievements to his name show him to be one of the best players of the last decade and that's how he will be remembered in history.

Beautiful game by Marat. And thank you a lot, JMDP, for game and respect.

I think Marat decided long time ago that he will not be sad in his leaving ceremony. But it took all his strength not to show how hard it was. He kept saying that he is at the beginning of new life. I hope so much all his new plans will be success.

Good luck, Marat!

Safin went out with his head held high. Del Potro handled it very well, hard for him to play one his heroes, at the same time he got the honour of playing him in his last match.

It was a good ceremony, not too cheesy, good they got some of the older guys back when he started on the tour.

Marat danced to his own tune and was respected by his peers, time to move onto the next challenges in life.

None, he's the only player I've ever had such a connection to, I'll just be a neutral from now on regarding favouritism.

It's kind of relieving that this is over, the struggle is finished.

:hatoff: to Marat.

I'm glad he's retiring - he's been struggling and hasn't really enjoyed himself. I would rather see him be happy doing something else. :) He finished his year well - 9-6 in his last 6 tournaments, didn't lose in the 1st round of any of them, and after not beating a single top 50 the first 8 months of the year - beat a top 50 player (Petzschner in Bangkok), a top 20 player (Gonzalez in Beijing), and a top 10 player (Davydenko in Moscow). :) For someone who didn't bother to have a coach this year or travel with a fitness coach the 2nd half of the year -- I was expecting him to just show up to these last tournaments, tank the match, collect the check and appearance fee and be on his merry way. He was trying very hard in these last matches, and he put up a good fight against Del Potro today. :yeah:

The farewell ceremony was good. :) Del Potro was very nice after the match.

This loser/choker/quitter wont' be missed. I never got the Safin-thing.

Only Frauderer/Nadull glory-hunters like yourself feel that way. Don't sppeak for actual tennis fans.

How much did some brainless Frauderer/Nadull glory hunter pay you to make that thread title in the first place?

I guess no tennis player can retire without someone wishing he'd die. xD

Great player, both his personality and game will be missed. Must have been a long year for him. Too bad he couldn't win one last title in the last few years, but he's still in the top 100 so a good timing to retire.

Horrible result. Del Mugro, the WOAT Grand Slam winner, isn't fit to tie Marat's shoes and should retire so nobody has to watch his one-dimensional game executed by no talent.

 Marat didn't want to look sad when losing his last match.

And you can see how much Marat liked his last match be against Del Potro, a young guy who just won USO!

Consider Delpo as your fave, Burrow ;) At least Marat would have approved

Also, hats off to Delpo for handling the situation with such class and respect to Marat. It was obvious that he has a ton of admiration for Safin. So cool that he signed Marat's name on the camera, too.. :worship:

Delpo, welcome back from the dip after winning USO :)

Marat, the tennis community will miss your charisma and tennis. Have a good life! :wavey: :)

Jolan, go jerk off on someone else and bless them with your sex jokes. The greats tend to play the champion's tour. If it's not too much to ask from your brain, perhaps you can deduce the rest. In any case, stop responding to someone who doesn't read your posts unless they are quoted, it's beyond pathetic.
