Ferrero was 6-2 5-2 up. I suspect a major choke here :o

Great win for Cuevas, though. well done Pablo :)

Was he really a former number 1?

Must be the worst in history.

lol massive choke by Ferrero. Cuevas then played some disgusting tennis to waste 5 match points on serve in the 3rd before closing it out.

Cuevas almost choked himself. From 53 *400 he lost 4 points and had to save 2 more breakpoints. Then he missed a couple advantages himself before he finished it off on his 6th mathpoint. Incredible last game!

The spanish crowd is pretty partizan.

Bad loss for JCF, he'll be very disappointed to do that in his own new tournament. Totally underestimated Cuevas, especially at 6-2 5-2 up. He never actually earned a MP.

Congrats Cuevas, played very aggressive and consistent. Really upped his game in the 2nd set taking full advantage of the momentum shift.

Cuevas started strong, the heavy groundies causing a lot of damage. However, JCF played a brilliant game to break for 3-2, and Cuevas went nuts, lost 6 games in a row. Then lazy service game by JCF, but didn't seem to matter as he took the break again pretty quickly. Couldn't serve it out though (this court isn't as quick as it looks, people are finding it very hard to hold serve this week). Lost the tiebreak, and then ran out of gas a bit in the final set, with Cuevas finding his confidence and groundstroke range, running him around.

When Cuevas was on, he was excellent. Last game was awesome drama, as Cuevas got seriously tight. JCF helpfully gave him 3 points, then on first mp Cuevas tried to finish with a full blast second serve ace.....which of course df'ed. Then went error crazy, kept stubbornly trying the huge second serve too, one clipped the outside of the line on bp, another made an ace at deuce. JCF couldn't break though, just nothing left in the tank.

Kinda fortunate for Cuevas I think - judging by earlier in the match he would likely have lost the plot again.

Yeah, he was really impressive at times, although you won't get away with a 30 minute meltdown like that most matches :-)

Nope. No fix here, Ferrero just played poor that 2nd set, and Cuevas started playing better.

Do the nobel thing and retire from the sport already, JCF. You are just embarrasing yourself.

:yeah:

I saw a few games in the 1st set and it looked like a prospect for a 6-2 6-3 win for Ferrero.

Four losses in a row, it's been a rough ending to the season. As usual when he's low on confidence and match-play he puts too much spin on his shots. He had to work so much harder to win each point than Cuevas who was more willing to hit flat.

JCF needs to flatten out his ground strokes if he's to compete in his 30s. He's well past the age of battling 20 stroke rallies.
