So to finish the year at #2, Andy would need to win Valencia, Paris and the WTFs with Rafa picking up less than 235 points  About as likely as me agreeing to your indecent proposal with Yavor

It dosent matter anyway, rankings 1,2,3 or 4 still mean your gonna face a tough QF in a slam these days so many good players now.

I don't understand.. I mean.. Mayer ?? Please.. he should've won that match in two. I hope he's ok !! I want to see him in Bercy !!! I paid for that actually. As Misha isn't playing there, my hopes remain on seeing Murray, Novak and Kolya in the QFs in Bercy.

Maybe Murray wasn't pushing too hard today, he's saving energy for later on, that's why he was a bit too passive and lost a set .. (trying everything I can to bring comfort down here)

Andy looked rusty in that match, but that's understandable. Probably underestimated his opponent a little, needs to be careful about lapses of concentration and complacency. He was perilously close to eating a bagel after finding himself down 0-5 in 2nd set - but this seemed to rouse his fighting spirit, good to see. But credit to Mayer who played some nice attacking tennis and superb volleys.

The conversion rate of all the breakpoint opportunities and other half chances (0-30) created could be better, but I reckon his game will get sharper with more matches under his belt. Bring on Paris and London.

He didn't convince so far. Moreover, Murray knows how to play him. He leads 6-1 their H2H. Aside from the AO where the spaniard was on fire, Murray was never really troubled by Verdasco.
Of course, everything is possible, I mean, Verdasco could play unbelievable today, who knows, but I think Murray has more chances.

You're all happy and bubbly, but that was a terrible match from Murray. He really need to improve his first serve percentage and cut short the errors. He was struggling. I don't know why. Maybe he needs to actually get more matches under his belt.

The positive things are that he managed to win even if he didn't play well, which is the mark of champions, like Federer, Nadal or Djokovic. Moreover, he had an excellent second serve, and won about 75% of his points on his second serve. He managed to hang in there in tough times, and it's actually his mental strength that got him to get the upper hand in the third set, while Verdasco collapsed.

I really hope he will play better in Paris Bercy, because I really want to see him in the quarterfinals.
However, tomorrow, he's facing my No.1 player, so unfortunately, I won't be cheering for him for once.

I just hope for a good match, hopefully three sets, with a lot of rallys and nice shots. I hope Youzhny won't choke and that Murray will improve his level. Looking forward to tomorrow's match. Good night to you all. :hatoff:

It wasn't terrible. It wasn't magnificent, but the strategy vs Verdasco was correct and he executed it well enough to get the win in spite of an ugly second set, and some parts of his game still not back up to their best.

This wasn't terrible, Murray has won uglier than that. He was OK. Murray will never look like a flashy shot maker next to Verdasco so he finds other ways of winning mainly good defense and taking ball early when he has the opportunity. He did this well in 1st set, 2nd set , but in 3rd set felt Andy was a bit passive, and duly Nando handed it to him. Had Nando been more patient maybe it would have forced a different more attacking gameplan out of Murray we'll never know cos he didnt need to in the end.

Your right about his 1st serve lol no idea what has happened to that shot, at Queens and Wimbledon it was firing beautifully since then its been well crap

Dont worry about Bercy I think Andy can make QFs there so you can see him!

I understand why some people have a lot of posts  Anyway, Murray's draw in Bercy is indeed not too rough until a probable quarterfinal blockbuster against recent US open champion Juan Martin Del Potro. Murray has a good chance of avenging what I condider quite a tough loss in Flushing Meadows. Hopefully he will prove me correct and advance to the semifinals. DelPotro hasn't been quite in form lately anyway (a couple of disturbing lossed in the past few months). I wonder how the argentine is going to cope with his grand slam success from now on.
Murray and Djokovic could be the leaders of this end of season. I hope Andy can keep this level of play for Bercy, and get even better for the London Finals.

no, dead on his feet after not finishing his match until nearly 2am and not getting to bed until gone 4, when he was due to start playing at 8.30pm - i'm not surprised it totally fucked him over today, and Stepanek played well in the last two sets and took full advantage.

Shit happens, he caught a bad break, he won last week, he'll be fine for London, this doesn't need such enthusiastic despair.

the only thing I would say is that in spite of his success in 2009, I think his game has gone backward a bit from the US Open level in 2008.

i wouldn't go that far. but i think he does try and use his legs and his defense to win him matches more than he was doing back in that period, and i don't think that's good long-term.

 Hopefully he goes forward next year, I just don't think still after all that has happened this year that he's actually looking at his game and taking it forwards we'll see after off-season I guess. Anyways I'm glad he's not gone too far in Bercy he can get rested for London, hope he plays well there :)

I hope he does look at his game because I think the emphasis on his fitness can only bring so many returns and I'm not sure there's too much more that that can deliver that it hasn't already. I think the off season emphasis this year should be less time training and more time on court retooling his game.

Tanked cos Andy wants to win the real French Open ...:p

London will be good. If he gets his 'nice' assed kicked by everyone than thats good because it will hurt him and FORCE him to alter his game.

I thought the loss to Cilic might have done something to him but I think he blames injury rather than his gameplan but it was a mixture of both.

Anyway Murray always said he wants to be no 1 in the world and WHEN he drops to 5 he will HOPEFULLY realise that he is going in the WRONG direction and has do things a little differently.

Saying that I still think the way he plays will be good enough to keep top 5 cos nando, tsonga, soderling, davydenko roddick too inconsistant.

Were criticising him after winning 6 titles in a season. We're a tough crowd.

 So win or lose all matches, London can only be good :p Looking forward to watching anyways

Just to hark back to Paris - interesting words from the Paris Tournament Director, in The Times http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/tennis/article6917647.ece?token=null&offset=12&page=2

Murray attracts praise in defeat

Jean-Francois Caujolle, tournament director of the BNP Paribas Masters, singled out Andy Murray for special praise at his end-of-event review and disclosed that next year there could be a dramatic change to the format in Paris. There is a powerful case, Caujolle believes, for the tournament to become a 32 rather than 48 man draw - "for it is quite normal that the draws become progressively smaller in order to arrive towards the Masters where there are only eight players."

He said Murray had been a victim of the current numbers and the consequent pressure it places on scheduling with only one court at the Palais Omnisport of a standard required for an event of this prestige. "[Murray] ended one match on Wednesday at 1.45am and there had been a real problem with the scheduling that day because we had six matches to play on he Centre Court," Caujolle said. The problem had been exacerbated by Marat Safin's three set loss to Juan Martin Del Potro, after which there was an extended retirement celebration for the Russian that put another spanner in the works.

"The next day Murray had to play on Court No 1 (against Radek Stepanek) and sincerely I believe he would not have lost that match if it had been on the Centre. He was a victim of those problems we have with a tournament with 48 players. He was extremely decent and said nothing about it. He just said the other player was better than him."

Caujolle revealed that his plans for a reduction in draw size would be put to the ATP Board next week. He also declared that an ATP 250 tournament would be scheduled in the same week as Paris next year - "so we are not only guaranteeing the existing jobs of the players but creating new ones," he said. "I trust it will be possible."

I agree with Caujolle here, I think Andy would have won against Radek considering the fact he finished his match at 2 am... but the thing is it was a poor scheduling from them too, they should have put the Safin- Del Potro match on Tuesday instead of Wednesday...but that's my opinion and it's in the past now so...

I concur. That's why I was so pissed off.

Hello :)

I've watched Murray in Valencia and Paris and was puzzled by him looking as suffering again and again, seemingly inguinal fold or thigh, I don't know, but he had a suffering face many times between points.

But yet it didn't prevent him from playing points correctly and he didn't ask for injury time-outs.

Yet I'm puzzled about that and surprised nobody talks about it : what's this problem ?

No, Valencia was his firt tournament since the injury. The fact he actually won it is truly awesome.
Furthermore, the level he reached in Valencia and Paris with so few matches under his belt is quite impressive. With almost no preparation, Andy can win anything.
In Paris, he partly (mainly, in my opinion) lost his match because of a bad scheduling / order of play.
The tournament organiser said he was sorry about their not having more tennis courts in Bercy.

I understand that, but my question was only about what he suffers about : I've seen him suffering a lot about his leg in his matches since Valencia, and I cannot be the only one who has seen that, it was so obvious

I gather he had a little bit of a niggle around his groin - just a bit of pain from overexerting it on his comeback. But it was nothing serious and he expects to be fine for London next week.

thank you : it's seldom I can see a player having a suffering face after some points so often in a match, and repeatedly for two weeks.

I just found it very strange
