Safin slams Berdych and comments on the tour length

On Berdych:

“Just come on; just grow up a little bit; 26 years old; just deal with that. If you’re losing, just be a man; be a man and lose as a man.
“Don’t pretend that you are injured and then you start running around and start to hit winners and then all of a sudden you pull the hands up in the air after winning the match?
“So then of course the guy will say: ‘No, I’ve been injured but then I felt a little bit better’.
“Of course he will find 10,000 excuses. Still, it’s not enough. You’re playing or you’re not playing. If you’re playing, so just shut…up and play.”

On schedule length:

“In 2004 we had this discussion in Olympic Games with Roddick about it and they were blaming me that I’m playing too much.”
“And I was saying that the season is too long. We should make it shorter. And the guys, they jumped on me, like I was the one who was wrong.
“So look at all of them — everybody is falling apart. Everybody is getting injured left and right, and everybody is complaining the season is long. It takes six years to realise that something is wrong?
“They just have to deal with that, not when they are 21 and ambitious and want to make money. They have to think a little bit with their brains and to make the career a little bit longer.”

Some pretty harsh stuff in there. Thoughts?

Short memory from the man taking a timeout before his opponent served for a match. It's something he has done before and it's a joke rule either way.

Schedule has been garbage for years and it won't change.

Yes, the 2005 AO final getting a timeout so to get a massage on his legs to remove tension is a legit injury, hahaha.

It's a bit of a shame though. This would be the time to tone it down a bit and give a handshake even if you have angry feelings towards your opponent. You don't want to leave the sport on a bum note.

It's disappointing to hear their falling out was due to something as mundane as scheduling. I had romanticized it in my mind that they fought over a groupie or something like that.

Davodus

This is pretty uncalled for, Tomas, to me was clearly injured. He was having trouble serving in particular, and his movement was slow. Sometimes when you are injured, you run through the pain, which Marat doesn't seem to have considered.
Also, I dunno why he was annoyed Tomas raised his arms when he won...he was just happy that he won

What? It makes total sense. Andy was able to play more matches than Marat because he was younger and his body wasn't getting the best of him back then. He was hungry for points and money. Now that his body is aging and he's losing his edge, he's now complaining.

His falling out with Roddick had nothing to do with scheduling. It was because of an incident at the Athens Olympics..neither Safin nor Roddick has divulged what the incident was,
Somebody asked Andy about it on Twitter and he actually responded:

TennisConnected @andyroddick any response to Safin's comment the other day about you not listening to him about the schedule when you were younger?

andyroddick @TennisConnected sure... wasnt exactly about the calendar.. was more about the fact that there was too much tennis in the summer of 2004...

...i agreed with this, but found it odd that he chose to play in sopot the week before on clay.. didnt think it gave him much of an argument...

...as far as complaining about too much tennis...

...that being said i really like marat and his opinions and am excited that at the very least this issue is getting discussed.

Nice of Andy to be so diplomatic about it. (and to say that he likes Marat and his opinions)

to all of you responders saying marat is a whiner, complainer, he should just retire, and that he is irrelevant, whatever. Have you even looked at the context of this answer that marat gave? do you know what the question was that he was asked? Please, take a moment and listen to this portion of the presser and you will see that he was fed the ammo to answer like this - they pushed him to start talking, saying that berdych had maybe faked the injury in the question, and knew that with his personality he would not stop once he got going... like it or not, he is not a robot who just says what he is supposed to, he speaks his mind. And if he is so irrelevant, why in heavens name do journalists rush to his pressers? why was his match, which I attended, at the US Open PACKED? along with his match, which I also attended, in Miami? He draws large crowds and people still love him...

may be he was pushed by the journalists to give a not nice reply, but the no hand shake part was his own decision, which is not very classy for me :wavey:

Safin was a great player. Very talented, GS champion, former No.1, entertaining to watch, and have lots of other great tennis achievements. You don't have to like him, but show some respect, damn it!!
There's a lot of tennis fan who still wants to hear what he's got to say.

I felt sorry for Safin re that whole post match 'celebration'. Clearly he just wanted to get out of there ASAP.

It's scandalous how this effort to shorten the season has been going on for 3 years until ATP finally bended over.

The hilarious thing here is although I admit Berdych can be an asshole on and off sometimes, he definitely was injured in that match.

Safin you shit poor loser, don't care that this happened 3 years ago, would have been great if Safin didn't retire and Berdych crushed him a few more times.

Safin is a legend. He can say whatever he wants. Yes that was harsh, but that was probably the truth

Berdych barely beat Safin at his very worst once and lost to a poor Safin twice. Berdych never did "crush" Safin.

Berdych was a mug back in all those matches though, shame Safin retired then though, would have loved to see post 2010 Berdych play that old Safin. :(

And Safin wasn't, eh?

I'm sure you would have, considering that if Safin wasn't in the mood to lose to the local butcher, he would have most likely pushed Berdych whilst being on one leg.

and brotree, I'm pretty sure he was referring to Berdych playing Safin in his later years.

That would actually be pretty cool. Safin would win on HC, Berdych on grass and on clay I reckon Berdych would have an edge too.

You have a point.

Don't like Safin, but yes, Berdych is the far bigger mug.

Dude let it go. He had a momentary blood rush to his head that day when he lost that match. Pretty sure they are okay with each other in a normal day after that.

Well, unlike Berdych, Safin didn't have the luxury of playing on slow grass. As he said in 2008, "thanks to the people for slowing the courts down", so I don't know how you can say Berdych would have the edge. And on clay, Berdych would have been heavy underdog. Safin was actually excellent on clay. Considering 18 year old Safin beat Agassi and Kuerten on clay, I'd sure he'd have had no qualms bettering a player like Berdych.

Generally speaking, it's hard to compare Safin to anyone, because there needs to be a big fat asterisk stating that if he actually bothered but this match up is a particularly bad one for Berdych, because Safin did everything better.
