What a pathetic stuff from Rafa
He should have won it 7-5 6-4 ( he had 3 match points, 2 on his own serve)
I hope winner of Gonzo / Safin won't crush you in the quaters
But good luck
Vamos !!!

Nadal choking. I guess that lack of match play can make you jittery. Nevertheless, you can no longer say Blake leads head-to-head. :)

:spit: If Blake had won everyone would be calling Nadal a mental midget and blake a mental giant :spit: horrible play by nadal the 2 times he served for it and in the tiebreak.

Rafa couldn't serve it out to save his life in the first two sets. (OK he served the first one out after saving 2 BPs). Mental implosion from Blake after he missed his opportunities in the 3rd. A job well done to Nadal in the end but truth be told Blake had the momentum and let it slip by going for a forehand on the 3rd BP in the decider which went out. But champs win them all even on a bad day and that's just what Nadal did today. Safin or Gonzalez won't get as close as Blake did today.

Should have been a routine 5 and 4 win in under 90 minutes but after saving three break points at 0-40 early in the third set, he was always going to surge forward and win. Gave himself more work than he needed to but Blake really did hit awesomely when he caught fire late in the second set. I can see him going through Gonzo or Safin in his next round but I wouldn't put money on him to beat Koyla in the Semis.

In general, a very good match despite numerous unforced errors from both players. Great comeback from James, who was the better player after 5-7, 4-5 part of the match. The tiebreak was the best James played for a long time. It is a pity James wasted 3 bps in the final set and in the next Rafa's game 0-30 advantage. This match proved that something clicked in James game and together with a coach change can bring far better results in upcoming months. No more defeatism and pessimistic head shaking, more smiles and fist pumping - let's hope it will continue.

what a useless clown Blake is - wasted 3 BP's in the deciding set at 3-2 and then gifted the match to Nadull:angry: Ho

I didn't realize Blake had a new coach. I never thought he would make that move. It looked to me like the new coach is already helping as Blake seemed to have some semblance of a strategy at times.

Nadal had some nervous double faults trying to serve it out in the second set, but Blake caught fire at the same time and played some great shots to take it.

sad for tennis, that nadal wins this match, if you see this.
blake should win this in two, clearly the better player and enjoy to watch.
nadal only 2 meters behind the line and only reacting on a hardcourt, LOL

hopefully the time comes, were this faker goes down the rankings!

Huh? If you are going to talk "should" Nadal should have won it in two, but he choked out two double faults trying to serve it out. Blake had a couple of great stretches but no way was he the better player in this match.

uber choking.......served twice for the match in the second set and double faulted twice on match points........pretty crappy display through out with a few moments of brilliance here and there in the middle.......

total waste of time and energy to play these pointless events.......i get a feeling that he is still not fit enough to compete on fast hardcourts like these.......look at his pathetic serving(even by his standards) and easy backhand misses........he is not flexing comfortably to deliver the serve and is struggling somewhat to stretch on the backhand.......if he is playing here without recovering totally, he is risking another injury by the end of paris or WTF.......

Blake had no business winning the second set. He had won up until the last services games of Rafa only 1 point in the second. A couple of lucky shots, netcords and lines and the sets were even. It was crazy. Third set could have gone either way, but I think the tiredness got to Blake at the end. He spent too much energy in the first two chasing balls where he could have finished the points earlier.

I agree, his service motion is still looking stiff and more upright than it normally is. I thought he looked fine otherwise though. Strategically I think he should have sliced his backhand to Blake's backhand more especially when he was under pressure on that side. He hit a lot of those really awkward squatting backhands that I think would have been better played as slices.

This is very similar to Rotterdam for Nadal. Losing a set in each match but somehow progressing through. He'll probably lose again in the final against a better hard court player : Djokovic.

who cares if djokovic is a better hardcourt player, nadal is a winner, he was a winner at the olympics over djokovic and he will be whenever a big match is to be played

Great show from James mainly at the end of that second set. That's how you dispatch second serves and play fast-pace tennis. Shame that he let the momentum go back to Nadal due to that hawkeye delay at 2/2 or 3/3 in the third.
I hope he'll take the good parts from this match into the remainder of his season.

Rafa choking to Blake? It seems that regardless of the ranking and recent history, Rafa really struggles against the most brainless player on the tour in the last 20 years.

Again...why play this tourney when healing is needed? Is the money that important?

8pNADAL

Nadal considered the match one of his best since returning from an abdominal injury suffered at the U.S. Open, and prevailing in three sets against one of the best returners in the game was a confidence booster.

“I played a very good match. I had the match under control,” Nadal said. “I managed to save very important points and when I had the chance I took it.”

This is what I'm talking about as far as Rafa's outfit. I will refrain from further "fashion" commentary. He's just too cute for this look.

On the tennis, congrats to Rafa... for winning the match if not playing great.

It's good to know James has a new coach. I'm glad he hasn't completely given up...

Because Murray is really close in ranking points.

You're kidding!

Firstly, I don't think Nadal is remotely bothered about staying ahead of Murray. He will be looking to gain ground on Federer.

Secondly, Murray doesn't get any points when he is not playing! Djokovic and Del Potro are currently bigger threats.

Thirdly, Nadal is playing this event to test out his fitness, and so far he seems as good as could be expected.

Blake's 5th loss when he won a set after saving MP:

2002 Davis Cup - Grosjean 4-6 1-6 7-6(7) 5-7 - 3 m.p.
2003 Sydney - Moya 3-6 7-6(6) 3-6 - 3 m.p.
2003 Houston - Mutis 4-6 7-6(3) 1-6 - 2 m.p.
2006 US Open - Federer 6-7(7) 0-6 7-6(9) 4-6 - 1 m.p.
2009 Beijing - Nadal 5-7 7-6(4) 3-6 - 3 m.p.

Nadal's 4th win when he lost a set after wasting MP:

2005 Costa Do Sauipe - Calleri 6-2 6-7(5) 6-4 - 2 m.p.
2007 Wimbledon - Soderling 6-4 6-4 6-7(7) 4-6 7-5 - 1 m.p.
2008 Wimbledon - Federer 6-4 6-4 6-7(5) 6-7(8) 9-7 - 2 m.p.
2009 Beijing - Blake 7-5 6-7(4) 6-3 - 3 m.p.

it really was expected. he did have a few chances to seal the deal in 2 but didnt work out that way for him.

some of this was choking some of it is a function of the fact that he is simply out of it at the moment. his form, his confidence, and his physicality have all taken a hit due to repeated exits from the sport this year.

it will take some time before he is able to start winning titles again.

He should have won it 7-5 6-4 ( he had 3 match points, 2 on his own serve)

By said same logic, Blake should have won 7-5, 7-6, as he had game point for 6-5 and 15-40 in Nadal's subsequent service game.

if he manages to tear that same muscle again, his year is done and spain will be without his services in december.

not only that but he wont recover in time to even start 2010. hopefully somebody can knock him out in the semis so he can go home and rest and recover. and train and practice a little.
