Gulbis downs Stepanek, 6-4 6-4

Gulbis was quite scary this match....serve was on fire and there's really nothing the Sexmaster could do.

Radek was cheated at 6-4 5-4, 30-30 when he hit a sweet lob that was called out....it was clearly in. Probably would've lost anyway though.

Stepanek 0/5 bp, Gulbis 2/2; true fighter and indoor monster this Radek, yeah right..

Great display from Ernests. No real mental lapses, and he kept Stepanek back on the baseline. Stepanek was not at his best, though. Maybe some after effects from DC.

Good luck in the next round Gulbis. :yeah:

I agree Steps was robbed on that lob to give Gulbis match point. Guess there's no Hawkeye. Too bad, but Gulbis was better on the day anyway. Who does he play next? Any chance Gulbis can break the 2nd round jinx?

The big question now is can Gulbis break that R2 curse and beat Monaco/GGL?

I thought for sure Ernie was gonna choke it away serving for it at 5-4, with the FH UE's and the DF to 30-40. But I was pleasantly surprised as he held his nerve/serve to close it out. Second round loss here we come!

Has he finally found the right team to motivate him?

Monaco should be a piece of cake on a court this quick if Gulbis keeps any form.

Should be more or less permanent :)

So Gulbis now has 20 points for qualifying and 45 for winning the first round. 65 points is the most he's gotten in any tournament this year

Steps can't win points off this small tournaments anymore. Just get the paycheck and leave.

So?

How exactly is he unable to earn points? I'm really curious, it will take some mighty imagination to come up with the explanation.

There isn't player who can't earn points in 500 at this point, but Steps is such a beast, he transcends it

He has already a Houston final, 175 points from DC and 90 from Barcelona - there's not much more he can get, unless he makes a SF at Tokyo.

What's with the phrase "indoor monster" right now on MTF?

People are using it for just about any player.

Marat Safin = Indoor Monster.

They don't count only 3, you know  In other words, ANY points earned would go towards his ranking, but he decided to let the youngster have his day out of the goodness of his heart :p

I expected this, did the pick in my fill in the draw already. I really think Gulbis has got it together now much better, after he got close to beat Tsonga last week and his recent Davis Cup win/coach switch I think he will go up from here. Of course he can always surprise us and lose against Monaco indoors..but I think he'll have a shot to reach the SF here.

Well, Safin won Madrid and Paris in 2004 just like Nalbandian in 2007.

3 Paris titles and 1 final in 5 appearances/Madrid(where he crushed Nalbandian) >>>> Nalbandians fluke of a MC where everybody had to pull out and 2 MS.

 Burro strikes again. He only had to beat 2005 Federer for it, but that's obviously less important than the fact that indoor monster Nadal and youngster Agassi withdrew. BTW, aren't you supposed to be banned

every time nalbandian is mentioned u need to bash him and diminish his achievements to make safin look better, ur pathetic.
everyone knows nalbandian is a better all around player than safin.

2005 Fed with a gimp ankle.

so gimp he reachd the TMC finals and took it to 5 sets without any sign of injury... right.

Are you completely blinded by your obvious Argentine fanboyism? Federer couldn't even fucking move. Go on youtube and look up the highlights. Nalbandian was hitting crosscourt forehands all day that Federer couldn't even get to because he couldn't even move for shit. It doesn't take a genius to see that, but obviously you're an idiot so its way over your head.

And Nalbandian a better all around player than Safin? With his WTA serve, average volleys and mediocre forehand ? Riiiiiiiiight.
