USTA to offer free live streaming on USOpen.org

Monday, August 24, 2009

More than 150 matches comprising more than 300 hours of live tennis action will be streamed for free throughout the United States on USOpen.org, the official website of the US Open. Titled “US Open Live,” the live streaming will be sponsored by the USTA’s two newest promotional partners, Westin Hotels and Stonyfield Farm.

IBM, the US Open’s technology solutions provider, has designed and developed the interactive media console for “US Open Live.” The media console will include picture-in-picture match viewing, user commenting and live match stats updates integrated with the live video. The USTA world feed, which is fed to international broadcasters in more than 180 countries, will be streamed live during all the live television windows for ESPN2 and Tennis Channel. All five television courts with announcer commentary will be available to users in high definition.

“When we announced our new landmark cable television deal with ESPN and Tennis Channel, we promised to deliver the US Open to more fans in more ways than ever before,” said Pierce O’Neil, USTA Chief Business Officer. “With the support of our two newest sponsors - Westin Hotels and Oikos Organic Greek Yogurt - and IBM, we are making that a reality by making over 300 hours of live match coverage available on USOpen.org on a complimentary basis to fans throughout the country.”

Every year during the US Open, USOpen.org is one of the most heavily trafficked sports websites in the world, attracting a global audience, which in 2008 exceeded 41 million visits from more than 200 countries. After successfully streaming the 2008 Men’s Final to more than 300,000 domestic viewers, live match streaming from the five show courts throughout the majority of this year's tournament represents USOpen.org’s largest new initiative.

“We’re very excited to partner with IBM to take the streaming of live tennis to a new level with ‘US Open Live’,” said Phil Green, Senior Director, Advanced Media for the USTA. “Offering high definition streaming through IBM’s new interactive media console will provide tennis fans with a more dynamic online viewing experience than they’ve ever had before.”

Of course it's only for the Americans :ras:

Eurosport has got Eurosport Player but that really sucks quality wise but it's not expensive either.
I hope Eurosport's producers have better taste than last year, because I really want to watch the best matches on Eurosport HD.

You can't blame them for that, it's sponsored by US companies.
But I'm sure some friendly intarweb-wizzkid will tell us deprived non-US citizens how to bypass. At least I hope so. Pleez? :D

Problem with Eurosport is that they spend too much time showing WTA-matches and matches of the Big Guns, which usually aren't all too interesting in the first rounds - unless you rather watch any Top 4 player wipe out Journeyman X with 6-1 6-0 6-2 scores than watch a tight match between two lesser gods, even if they are 'unknown' to the major public.

True Karin.

You can always bypass the American-filter with a certain trick starting on P ending on ROXY but streaming through it can be laggy, especially if you have to reroute the signal from America-Europe-America-Europe..

This year Eurosport is also using their 2nd channel, Eurosport 2, for live coverage of the US Open, so that is already an improvement.

For those who have DirecTV:

http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/content/sports/tennis/us_open_2009

Nothing matches the passion of New York's tennis fans under the lights, and with the U.S. Open Interactive Experience, you'll feel like you're courtside at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Watch up to six live matches, including bonus coverage of outer-court matches you won't see anywhere else, either on separate channels (702–708) or at once on the U.S. Open Mix Channel (701). And get real-time scores, draws and match schedules at the press of a button. It's the ultimate viewing experience for the ultimate tennis fan.

I wonder what that actually means. Will they really stream those matches in at least 1280x720 (720p) or are they just refering to a higher bitrate, maybe 2-3 Mbit, for the livestreams?

And five courts? I doubt that they really placed HD cameras on all showcourts. Probably only on Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong?
Anyone who knows more?
Thank god for Eurosport HD. The german version is finally available since July. I am glad that I don't have to watch crappy Eurosport SD anymore.

Is anyone getting clear HD without problems? I think they're having some issues with the streaming and I use cable too!? At one point it looked funny; half of the video buffered at one speed, and the other half video was 2 sec. delayed. Now, the Mathieu vs. Youzhny match no longer has a button for streaming, and the other ones are either frozen, or show only ads.

They've probably woefully underestimated demand. With no tv coverage until 1pm I'm sure plenty of people in the US are trying to access the streams, and then there's all the people around the world trying to find ways to hijack them as well...

i think it should be fine soon. Couple of courts streaming is back on. When the stream is on, it starts showing on the small court window where you click then the actual whole screen comes on after the loading thing. So 3 windows have started coming.
