Marat Safin's Grand Slam farewell - How far will he go?

Due to the announcement of his retirement at the beginning of the year, this is very likely to be Marat Safin's final slam appearance. He has been a great player and a very interesting character on the tour for many years since bursting onto the scene with his US open final upset victory over Pete Sampras. What are his chances of getting to the latter stages of the draw and possibly causing a few upsets along the way?
Goran Ivanisevic's achievement of winning Wimbledon as a wild card should be proof enough to never count great tennis players out.

I don’t think there’s going to be a sudden inspiration or surprise run from Marat in his last slam, so I say he’ll bow out in the third round.

Hopefully has a good run... pretty emotional seeing him go even for a non-fan.

Marat should just retire already - he's stinking it up with his "farewell tour".

It won't make a difference.

You never know with Marat. Could be a 1st round loss, as well as a good run til the quarters or semis... Hopefully he'll make a great display for his last GS.

He'll go out in the first round hopefully.

Hope the draw is kind to him - but he will likely face a seed in the 1st round. :scared:

I really hope that Marat does well in his last slam.. Hard to believe he won't be here next year.

Depends on the draw but it would be a shock to see him get to the R16 for me. I think it would be nice if he can win a few rounds and lose to a very good player when he does and hopefully on a big court as well. He's been a great player and it'll be sad to see him gone.

I will reappear on this forum in 2014 and proceed bashing today's top players when they are down, bring it on.

I sincerely doubt he will even find the place. Lots of clubs and hookers in NYC.

Hopefully he has a very good tournement, but i say 3rd round will be furthest for him unfortuntley.

A first round defeat would be a good result for that overrated mug.

Would love for Marat to reach the Quarter Finals of the US Open, the Slam where he showed the world just how devastating he could be... but he won't, and everyone knows he won't, that's what really ruins his farewell.

I'll be safe and underestimate him --> 1st Round. ;)

I'd like to think he'd make it to the third or fourth round. But all it takes is drawing Fed or Murray in the first round. That would suck, though it would be a hell of a night match.

I've just got this inkling that Marat will take a wildcard into a slam in the future. Hes only 29. I think the hunger will be back.

He still has hunger, you tool, you can't have Safin in your signature if you don't read any of his post match conferences, sorry.

Marat still has the hunger to collapse against weaker opponents. I'll say first round.

i think i would actually like seeing safin going all the way.

highly unlikely though. he'll reach the quarters at most, imo.

who cares he might as well not show up because nobody gives a fuck about this error prone sod.He should have disappeared after Wimbledon and gone away to Russia to chug on vodka and getting lap dances in strip clubs.
Anyway Monfils will send him packing...

Actually lots of people still want to watch Marat play. That's why he gets WCs, packs even smaller courts and gets invited to the exhos. You may not like Marat but he is a super popular player.

The most talented athlete ever and the undisputed greatest tennis player ever when he is on, will unfortunately not be motivated on his farewell Grand Slam. Therefore he will go home/bars/stripclubs after the 1st round.

Doubt he'll make it out of first week. Even if he does, the game has really moved on from the likes of him, Hewitt and Ferrero.

The game has moved on lmao

Yes, cause Murray, Djokovic and Roddick are so much better eh?

I love the way you never mentioned Roddicks name in there.

The game has moved on so much that he beat peak Federer in the 2005 AO when he was playing 10x better than he is now, yaaaa.
