Tommy @ US Open !

Still can't accept the loss to Isner, but I guess it has to go eventually. In the meantime,Tommy is #21 according to Judio's live ranking,so he'll probably be within that famous seed from #21-24..
At least I hope he overcame that loss and is ready for the upcoming USO! auf geht's.

Since Nalbandian won't play, Tommy should at least be seeded 20th.

Not a bad draw.

R1 Qualifier
R2 Kendrick or Vassallo Arguello
R3 Verdasco
R16 Roddick
QF Djokovic

It's alright. Decent draw to really work and dig yourself into the tournament. Would have preferred Kohlschreiber's spot for instance, though. Easier third round and I also would have liked Djokovic in a fourth round first a little more than Roddick.

Well, I want Tommy to really go deep here again, and if he reaches the quarters again, he'll probably have done so by beating two top 10 players, so from that point on everything would be possible. ;)

Lugburz
08-27-2009, 06:54 PM
The easiest draw ever?

Pretty nice draw, should be 90 points at least. Verdasco is also winnable but a very tough one alas...

The easiest draw ever?

At the USO you mean? I'm not so sure. Considering his seeding position, of all the players he could have faced in the third round, he got one of only two possible top 10 players, so he wasn't so lucky in that regard. Roddick is also at his very best right now, so ...

But whatever. As I said, if you want to accomplish big things, you have to beat the big ones, and I think that's the only thing Tommy's striving for these days.
At least the first two rounds promise the opportunity of a smooth start.

TommyB.
08-27-2009, 11:51 PM
I wouldn't call it an easy draw or the easiest draw ever. The first two rounds are doable...ok...but then we have to overcome top 10 players. Step by step please. ;)

I'm kind of nervous about the matchup with Roddick. He's going to be a dangerous opponent. He's going to want this really bad, especially after his loss at Wimby and with the USO being his home tournament. I know Tommy can beat him, but I hope Tommy knows he can beat him!! ;)

Ad Wim
08-28-2009, 10:44 AM
Pfff, you're getting a bit ahead of things sundog. Roddick would be 4th round and I would already be very pleased with that, looking at his results of the last few weeks. And he would have overcome Verdasco, that would be a huge thing already.

I did see that Haas has a positive record against Verdasco and Roddick, but these are not very representative though...

Falla it is, well another dirty player as Tommy would say ;) so I guess we won't need to worry much.
What was it last year when he beat him,Wash DC? Ah that really should be piece of cake, the only guy who I wanted Tommy to avoid from the qualies is black kid Ouanna smth, so I guess we can still be happy with the draw ;)

Lucky you, Eurosport(Germany) So,will there be any difference between ES and ES Germany?

Yes I think ES Germany will show it, they usually tend to concentrate on German players in New York. Haas, Kohlschreiber or Kiefer at least. I hope so. ;)

Yappa
08-30-2009, 06:06 PM
No, there's no difference between ES International and ES Germany when it comes to Tennis.
It's been a while (years) that we had our own separate coverage of a Grandslam event on Eurosport Germany. All we get now is the normal Eurosport International feed with heavy focus on the top players. So if you want to see Haas, you'll have to hope that neither Federer nor any other "important" players are playing at the same time as Haas.

Remember when we still had Stach & Kuehnen in NY talking about the matches and doing interviews with Haas and all the other players? And Stach wasn't the only german commentator in NY. Nowadays though, they all stay in the german Eurosport broadcasting center in Munich and we have to put up with Mats Wilander & Barbara Schett instead. This won't change, unless Tennis gets more popular again.

You are right! I remember, it's been two or three years. But I would say ES showed all Haas matches in New York since that time. Pure luck maybe. Let's see what happens tomorrow.

OK things are much calmer now ,Falla looks like he'll retire at some point. Well,if Tommy can pull this one out at any cost I'll be satisfied, but he won't be given any credit from me with this performance.

thefly
08-31-2009, 10:53 PM
lol, that was one weird match. Tommy lost the second set which he was supposed to win, being close to a 4-0 lead - but wins the sets that were pertty much already gone, in the third even escaping twice, including Falla's lead in the TB. That's something Tommy certainly deserves some credit for, since it was not all Falla's fault.

But though there was some light there, it certainly was among a lot of shadow. Tommy really has to find his cool, find his focus. I don't want to judge too much after the often difficult first round on a loud, busy court - so I hope to see a different Tommy in round two.

btw, the ES player stream looked great, is it just me or has it been improved since RG? I also think it wasn't 16:9 back than ...

Lugburz
08-31-2009, 10:57 PM
ok . Tommy wins 7-5 4-6 7-6 6-2,
and this has to be the worst performance after a while, and that loss to Isner looked better than this, but a win is a win and I'm more than happy with the outcome. But our boy lacked confidence, pushing it too far and sometimes strokes went out ridiculously. I hope he knows he played like crap because he'll need to upgrade himself to better version if he wants to do some serious business at the Open.
There were only couple of good shots and in those situations I couldn't resist-those backhand winners and I was talking to myself like:How can you be mad at him :D , but seriously ,bad performance after all!

Credit goes to Falla for not retiring when obviously he was in hurt.

Lugburz
08-31-2009, 10:59 PM
yeah ES player was awesome, amazing quality !

btw,I had to criticized Tommy, cause its better to do it when he won! I'm glad I did it with those circumstances. :p

TommyB.
08-31-2009, 11:31 PM
Weird, really weird. Tommy's serve was pathetic over three sets but Falla couldn't take advantage with his own weak serve. But I don't want to criticize him that much. He showed some good shots as well. I think we'll see a different Haas against Kendrick ... probably on a bigger court. ;)

Lugburz
08-31-2009, 11:48 PM
Well this so called bad win could even help him. After all maybe he finally putted himself ahead of things, with too much of confidence and that caused this display. Kinda reminder of a match vs Peya at the Wimbledon.
But again,Tommy as a Tommy equals slow start ;) I'm sure he'll be just fine

Lugburz
09-01-2009, 01:59 AM
btw, watching highlights on ES 2 ,does anyone thinks Tommy's forehand changed a bit, sometimes goes over his head? Hitting the balls with more spin? In the TB of the 3rd set there were few hits that looked like Nadal's :scared: I hope I'm wrong and can't wait to watch the match once again using re-live option.

ok I just watched some of the re-live action, the forehand I was talking about can be seen at 2h.33m:25s and some of the points afterwards. Weird forehands to compare with that pure-classic Tommy Haas forehand that gave him winner for 5-4 in the TB of the 3rd set.. Anyone else spotted this ? :scared: thefly ..?

Well, I guess at times those forehands were just a response to Falla's own long forehands, as defensive shots, but I think it worked well. I think he tries those more often since it worked so well against Roger in RG this year, maybe a little attempt to adapt to today's power tennis.
If he could indeed further perfect those topspins, I think it won't hurt. Just makes his game all the more complete. ;)

yeah well I haven't seen that before RG,and obviously at RG I wasn't paying attention too much on it. I agree that could help his all-around play but that's just not his famous forehand. You could add top spin on many other ways, but this looked like some defensive player.
I can assume that he is pissed off at him when he do that, and afterwards smashes his flat forehand like that was on 5-4 in TB.
I can hope that was just an response to Falla as you said, but luckily(for me)there were only a couple of those forehands.

wow umm.. That was a weird match. many ups and downs from both players, breaks and stuff.
I can't say it was a really weak match by Tommy since Falla played really well too, but I can't say it was a good one too.
I think the serve wasn't good enough and maybe he just couldn't force his game over Falla, maybe it's just a matter of match-up, but anyway he won in 4 sets and had today to practice a bit more, good luck tomorrow!

Well done, Tommy, definitely a huge step up compared to the first round. Kendrick wasn't the strongest opponent today, but that can't diminish my impression of Tommy today that much. Good serving, almost flawless from the baseline, and especially great defensive shots. His service got a little weaker in the third set, and he was a little less aggressive, but that may have been because he lost a bit of the positive tension after gaining the 2-0 lead. I'm sure something like this won't happen against an opponent like Verdasco, who currently seems like the next one after all. Will be interesting. Bring it on ...
Oh, and btw ... yeah, 2/18 bp conversion - not good. ;)

Taking out that prick would be a huge pleasure to behold in more than one way, so I'm highly motivated for tonight. ;) Tommy has to play extremly solid, that's for sure. I think variety will be a key, Tommy has the tools to deny Verdasco any kind of rhythm, and he has to make use of these.

Also, considering Tommy's showings at the other three majors this year, I somehow want him to get a chance to play on Arthur Ashe here again as well, and if it's only once ...

You know, I am really starting to hate that Sharapova. So ES switched to her match, when her opponent is serving for the set, and what happens? Sharapova rebreaks of course. I lost count on the number of deuces in her following service game. All I know is that it took too damn long. Now they're in the 3rd set and we don't have any Haas on TV.

Well I just came in at the very end of the Match so I didn't really get to see Tommy play at the U.S. Open.
I don't know why, but normally I start to lose interest in tennis for the year AFTER the U.S. Open. But this year I haven't really even been all that interested in the U.S. Open  I guess I'm just getting old  There are so many players from so many countries that I can't even say a lot of their names--I think tennis has past me by
