Paulo should beat Nadal at least once. He usually starts well but doesn't keep it up/Nadal raises the level.

9-0 now.

Slowly but surely.

Shaky at the start, but Nadal played excellent as the match wore on.

Better movement, speed, power, serving, everything was better today.

Berdych will be a very tough encounter, should be good.

Nadal looking like his game is beginning to come back together. Mathieu too inconsistent.

YAYYYYY!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Well done, Rafke. 'Never in doubt' if I ever dare say so. :yeah: :hatoff:

Nice try, PHM, but to no avail, as was obvious when he shanked his 3-0 lead in the first set.
The final, here? I'd say it'll be a Muzza - Raf affair, can't see anyone throwing a brick in the woodworks for this right now, might be just me.

Great job Raf.

And of course, thanks for the cash! :D

Useless match-up. Always the same scenario, Mathieu runs, fights and hits winners from time to time but everything is meaningless because in the most important moments, Nadal is just too solid in defence.

it was nadal who was hitting almost all the baseline winners.

He made too many forehand errors. He will have to improve that to beat Berdych.

That was a horrible first set from Nadal; he wasn't moving well, and almost every shot seemed to land near the service line.
He played like someone who'd injured or (what I think is probably the case) someone who's really lacking in confidence.

But he really turned it around in the second set and played much better.

Mathieu did put up a good fight at times, but made some inopportune errors, such as the missed overhead on Nadal's set point in the first.

Although half of Nadal's matches on hardcourt are played in the same manner, almost every shot landing near the service line. Even at the US Open last year for a lot of the Murray semifinal match.

Some of you guys talk as if you've never seen Nadal play before. Same with his return of serve, often inconsistent on hardcourts, nothing to do with his 'comeback'.

Just saw highlights of the match, and Nadal looked pretty good. Definitely the best match he’s played since his comeback. PHM should’ve been 4-1 up in the first set, but did play a decent match with some impressive flat-hitting, just not good enough to beat Nadal.

So did Federer, now 'beautiful tennis' isn't good enough to win slams........

Expected win and scoreline, good solid win for Rafa in his build up to the US Open will have to play the same level or better to beat berdman

Nadal was at Roland Garros and last years US Open, no need to act like he's pulled out of every slam Federer has won but for sure it makes it a lot easier for Federer.

I was referring to Roland Garros 09 (Nadal wasn't there form-wise), and Wimbledon 09. US Open 08 was a stepping stone to the Australian Open, gradual improvement on hardcourt (albeit hampered by the hectic Olympic schedule). Nadal may still be shaking off rust, but he hasn't forgotten what he did to win the Australian Open, and he hasn't forgotten what went wrong in the US Open last year. Part of that has been corrected by a light schedule of late, allowing him mentally and physically to peak at the US Open.

seems rafa played better
US is rafas first priority I think now.
He seems to play better.
That he misses more forehand can be a good sign due to that
he has changed a little bit in his tecnique.

Yes this is true, I think he will make hardcourt slams a big priority from now on (not just this US Open), he knows his game can be just as dominant on hardcourts as it was on clay/grass, with the slight tinkering of the forehand.

saw the rerun. very good to see rafa still has it. didnt expect nothing less from him, than to keep it going. I dont buy the confidence thing, he's got plenny of it, esp against the likes of slutthew. shaky fh at the start but the end was never in doubt as it should be.

It's nice to see Nadal getting more confidence and playing much better than in his previous match. I hope he can keep getting better to reach his true level at time for the US Open.

But the schedule of Nadal is really annyoing. Why they always put Nadal the night in Canada and USA? He is always the one who play in the evening and this is really annoying for the european fans, who are the majority of Nadal fans anyway.

Is Nadal the only draw of the tournaments held in America and Canada? Federer, Murray, Djokovic plays almost always during the day. But Nadal almost never!
