Ferrer outmugged Federer today, nice to see him FINALLY winning a tight one where he is playing badly outside the slams, good comeback, the right result in the end :yeah:

Pretty bad match for Federer, but as is typical for him, he always finds a way to win when he's way off.

Could be a well deserved win by Ferrer. He played consistently well to Fed's BH throughout all the match and with Fed's bad form today it really helped David. But some baaad games for Ferrer(at 3-4 2nd set, at 3-1 3rd set) and some nice Fed in the end and we've got what we have.

How though, from like four unforced errors from Ferrer in that game to break back at 1-3*?

Ferru realized he could win, and then choked accordingly. Bread and butter stuff, really. I'm just trying to figure out why it was Ferrer controlling most of the rallies throughout the match on such a fast hardcourt.

Federer can be lucky that he's the #1 at the moment and build all his image over the years otherwise he would lose a lot more matches. Also he can be lucky Djokovic and Nadal are far away from their best. Murray is the only rival at the moment.

Maybe not technically, but it was thrilling to see it anyway after Federer wasted much easier opportunites earlier in the match.

That was Ferru's match for the taking, though.

But it's not like he loses to these calibre of players in slams, where Federer's level is much higher than in non-slam tournaments.

Toying with himself and his stupid errors, perhaps... but yeah, the result was never in doubt. As I watched it I recalled the Ginepri match in the 2nd Round last year and knew that Fed would still be taking it. Can't see Lleyton or Sam taking him out in the QFs so it looks like he's gotta up his form if he wants to beat Murray in the Semis.

That first set I meant. He rather unnecessarily decided to STOP taking his chances thereafter, the plonker. Perhaps a fix, after remembering the deal was to be just as gracious to Feds as he was to Nads last week.

As is Roger....He isn't at his best either on hardcourts..how can he be lucky when he isn't playing his best either.....u sound as if roger is lucky to win all his matches.....tht happens when u want someone to lose so much and if the guy wins

And HE IS NOT LUCKY to be No.1 ...the guy won 2 grand slams and a masters event in the last couple of months...and he played in 16 grand slam finals out of the last 17 grandslams

agree with the fed way off form comment, he shanked an unbelievable ammount of shots in the first. i get the distinct impression that these sort of matches for fed these days are just 'practices' where he will almost deliberately put himself under pressure or attempt rediculous shots that are impossible, to hone his skill for the slams

That's true, but considering Ferrer had to retire in his match against Rafa last week due to an injury... I think it would surely have been quite an embarrassment for Roger. ;)

I see, but I thought he healed and was fit? :p Well to be fair, Ferrer played a very good match up until the last set when he errored all over the place allowing Fed to stay in it and raise his level a notch. I fully believed Fed was going to lose that up until he broke back in the 3rd.

He'll need to raise it up big time against Hewitt/Querrey. Hit the practice courts Fed. :wavey:

I watched this match with interest one minute and indifference the next. Even though Federer looked flat and lost the first set, it was never in doubt. David Ferrer is a tenacious competitor but not a believer in the end like so many others who face Federer. They snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
