Cincy 2R: Guccione def. Tsonga 7-6(12) 6-2

Tsonga had 5 setpoints in the tie-break (6:5, 8:7, 10:9, *11:10 - Guccione saved it with the best rally of the match, 12:11).

A piss poor final point in the tiebreak and a shit 20 minutes from Tsonga was all it took here.

Tsonga's fun with big servers continues.

Well done to Gooch - a good tiebreak from him under pressure, esp set point down when he recovered the minibreak.

If Petzschner wins, we have a classic. If Berdych wins, it is still interesting, but the Gooch should get another routine win in the end.

BANG BANG
Tsonga gave up in the second after being broken

Tsonga should be fined for lack of effort in the 2nd set :o
Unfortunately he looks like completely useless player against "all'servers". Lost 3 matches in his last 4 tournaments to them:
Wimbledon: Karlovic 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 5-7 6-7(5)
Washington: Isner 6-4 6-7(2) 6-7(4)
Cincinnati: Guccione 6-7(12) 2-6

Jo didn't win one return game in those 9 sets :o

That TB was like a never-ending story, no one giving a single point on his own serve. Tsonga had his chance SP at his serve at 22nd point (or was it 24th?) but played too passively and safe and Cris managed to get to the net and finished it in a style. After being broken in the second set opener Tsonga just gave up and did not even move in the next game. He obviously figured out that Ginger is too big for him.

I have to reconsider Cuccione. I posted a few weeks ago that he wasn't very good; but he's shown this week he can be a good player when he's on. A great win today. He just needs some consistency; he's had some very bad losses this year.

Guccione is a headcase. With his amazing serve should be a regular ATP player. It's pathetic when he loses in 1st round of Challengers :o

Tsonga tanked after being broken in the second? You mean that first game in the second where he played two drop-shots that didn't even bounce inside the doubles' alley and where he was passed after hitting a smash on a ball that bounced two metres inside the service box was him actually trying? I'm not even talking about the 2 or 3 forehand UE where he was in no danger at all.

This was a pathetic match from Tsonga. He has no excuses

Consigliere
08-19-2009, 05:15 PM
Actually I think Guccione is fine mentally. He just knows his limitations, hence you never see him blow up when he's losing a match he shouldn't be.

Ginga ninja! :haha:
:spit:

When I saw this was a prospective match in the draw I immediately thought of you.

I caught a little of it and Gooch played some terrific, beautiful drop volleys in the tiebreak. He stayed composed while Tsonga was pouting and dramatizing.

One of the last times I saw Gooch play was his loss to Donald Young in Australia. Better days are here.

If he continues to play this way he could do something at the USO.

What do you think of Eduardo Araujo? Last night I saw a vinyl reissue of his A Onda E Boogaloo from the late 60s (I thnk) and almost bought it simply because the sleeve photography was so beautiful. Also saw amazing cover art for vinyl reissue of Zito Righi's Alucinolandia.

I wish a player like the Gooch was in the top 10 or 20. Tsonga doesn't charge the net quite as much.

Tsonga was dreadful in the second set. Just gave up on the match. TB was good quality though, Guccione did well to save a SP on Tsonga serve, just controlled the point and made a good volley. The Gooch may have his chances for a QF spot.

Funny to see how fickle MTF is again. Last week when the top 8 made the QF's tennis was too predictable and this week the Gooch teaches Tsonga a lesson.
