Soderling nearly made a successful return to action after his injury, but once Hewitt captured the second set tie break there was only likely to be 1 winner.

Unlucky Robin, he hasn't been hitting without pain for long, so this isn't much of a surprise.

Soderling's demons strike back :o Ok, first match point Hewitt saved with an ace, but 2nd mp was a choke job by Soderling, from comfortable position in which he wins many points, hit a forehand 2 meters out :o BTW, last year lost in Cincy also after wasting two mp's (against Kohli then).

Solid and impressive business on serve from Robin all throghout the match, save for that one game in the third which he lost in sloppy fashion. The mishits and loose shots cost him. Good win for Lleyton, and a very nice tiebreak, even though Robin should have put the match to bed on his 2nd matchpoint.

This is ladies and gents how you let a better at the moment, younger and way more powerful opponent beat himself. Hewitt early in the second set discovered that the Soderling FH is completely offline today so he kept feeding him on that side, and Robin just got more and more frustrated. Apart from very good serve placement (as always) Hewitt game was nothing special, he found a weakness and exploited that to max.

Too many erratic FH's from Soderling. But nice to see Hewitt getting the win.

Looks like Magnus Norman shouldn't be getting a paycheck this week for his contributions to Soderling's "mental" game.

Good fighting from Lleyton. Alot of beautiful forehands by Soderling, in the last two sets flying into the fence.

Soderling back to him old self

You either didn't watch the match or don't know anything about Robin. Had this been him prior to Norman he would have gotten way more irritated about himself and everything after misfiring at critical points. Now he just kept going on serve doing what he could, only conceding one break.

Good effort from Llegs - he was struggling right through that second set, under more pressure on serve, and just eked out the tiebreak. Soderling had his chances.

Aww poor Toaderling. When I left the livestream he was winning the 1st set easily and I thought Rusty was done for. Goes to show how much I know about tennis.

Oh dear Soderling. Horrible match from him. Lleyton didn't play well either and got let off the hook big time. The first set wasn't even close when Soderling could actually get the ball in play, but from the second set onwards he fell apart and had to rely on his serve to keep him competitive.

Hello tennis expert, i just meant that Soderling was so bad that Lleyton didn't have to play well to win that match.

Llegs should have done the lawnmower to piss off the Toad at the end.

I love his poor logic though regarding his form and chance of winning slams. Paraphrasing: "At Wimbledon I was really in good form. I came a few points close to beating Roddick who almost beat Federer in the final."==> Sorry mate, but he wouldn't have gone though Murray with his Counter-punching game.

Agree. He's been talking up his slam chances all year but the last 2 matches he's played are a realistic indication of where he's at in the game. He got hit off the court by Ferrero last week in straights and was well on his way to a similar outcome today before Soderling brain farted. He's still a great fighter which you've gotta love but there's no way he's a threat to win slams now. If he reaches the 4th round or quarters at the Open then that's a great effort from him.

i agree, at slams he is much an also-ran... a couple of levels below contender...

still, his spirit is a rock, and i dont think he can be any other way... it may make him appear foolish, but it's what'll get him squeaking through these tough first rounders till he gets his ranking in a position to dodge bullets like soderling early on... hewitt really needs a mini run here at cinci... all about match time, always has been in order to build Fort Hewitt...

Good win for Lleyton, especially winning the second set tiebreaker with 2 MPs saved. Needs to make the quarter finals here to possibly be seeded for the US Open! Lets go Rusty!

fully expected. this soderling is just not that good. its high time people start realizing that. he had good 2-3 weeks and now its over.

get over it. Muster would have beaten this mug from a wheelchair while dragging behind him a very large farm animal on a chain.

That was so intense! I watched the whole match. Lleyton just couldn't make any inraods on Soderling's serve pretty much the whole match, except for the only game he broke serve, and the last game of the second set. He almost blew it in the ti-ebreak, having a double mini-break at 5-2, but losing both. Great fighting spirit, good luck against Becker!
