Mugiest matches you've ever watched?

For me it was Monfils vs Ljubicic at Roland Garros 2008. It was so rubbish that the only reason the crowd cheered was because a french guy had made it to the next round. Both guys should have been shot for that mugfest, Ljubicic for his terrible pushing that day and Monfils for pushing and also having the nerve to do a motobike celebration at the end, clearly celebrating the mediocrity that had just taken place for 3 terrifying hours.

That was one of the most paceless, rhythm-less matches of all time, like a training session. I was actually rooting for Simon so Boredo wouldn't qualify for the TMC, in the end Marcos managed to stop the nonsense.

Q. In the first set you were playing pretty cagey, not big shots. Was that not because of your wrist but a tactical decision?

GAEL MONFILS: I tried to do something else, but actually was shit.

Totally agree, If it weren't for Rogers okay serving he would have lost a couple of sets with breadsticks for Rafa, Rafa was playing just as uninspired, both were quite off.

I keep hearing all these bad stuff about it, but surely it was a little decent, conisdering both were top 15 then. :shrug:I know, they were doing rather well in the rounds before, and Simon was very decent against Nadal then, but that match really was absolutely pathetic. I'm a huge fan of both and I was mortified watching them play so poorly on the Center Court.

And I was not embarrassed by the Monfils-Ljubo match, so I'm quite tough. Simon-Robredo was terrible indeed, but not as bad as Simon-Monfils imo.

Most people feel scared to admit that players like Borg and Lendl were unbelievably boring to watch. But they had more to their game than Simon has now, they could construct tactics, play with worse equipment, etc.. Simon, Murray, etc, tend to be VERY passive most of the time.

I'm a Monfils fan but that was an awful awful awful match to watch. Yes Gael can be passive at times, but on this day you could tell something was up with him it was very very very odd. The two guys were treating each other as if they were 2 friends warming up. That is how they were hitting the ball truly. Almost led me to believe the fix was in.

If the definition of mugiest is the most boring with long winded rallies, I'd have to say a lot of Nadal's matches qualify, but IMO the worst of all time was Coetzer vs Sanchez Vicario at the FO many years ago. The match went like 4 hours and I half slept through it waiting for the men's match afterward. I'd fall asleep and wake up hoping it was over, but they were still rallying as if they only played one point the whole match.:mad::mad::zzz:

I know that probably belongs on the WTF, but any men's match, even a fixed snorefest between Monfils and Simon is much better than anything in women's tennis.

When Davydenko is not on his game - eg. serving poorly, forced to hit volleys and failing miserably - the result is pure torture.

In general I'm becoming more and more nostalgic for tennis of the past and increasingly frustrated with contemporary tennis. Mindless baseline bashing, ugly two-handed backhands... You see a mugs' match almost every day.

The young up-and-comers almost all play ugly tennis.

When a pro is not on his game it's very often ugly. That's the case even for the likes of Federer and Sampras.

I watched Davydenko from the first row at the WTF final and that was absolutely brilliant (sometimes mindblowing) stuff, and so was his match against SŲderling. But it's true that many players play the same way these days. Big forehand, two-handed backhand, no slice, average (at best) volleys...

It's particularly ugly with Davydenko, because his game is based on getting every angle right and when he doesn't it makes for bad tennis.

His game is also beautiful, in its own way, when he's on, because that means that he's efficient. Without the efficiency he's a chump.
