Gulbis beat Djokovic to start the year. And that's about his only result of note in 2009. Still.

Just over a year ago, the 3 most promising youngsters were, Cilic, Del Potro, and Gulbis, born within a few weeks of each other. Here's the state of play on the first Monday of July:

43 Cilic, Marin (CRO)
49 Gulbis, Ernests (LAT)
65 Del Potro, Juan Martin (ARG)

Basically, they'd shadowed each other up the rankings. Today Del Potro looks a genuine slam threat in the near future. Cilic is gradually climbing, although struggling to quite break the top 10 - still fairly respectable given he's not quite 21 yet.

Gulbis, meanwhile, is ranked two spots lower than Ramirez-Hidalgo.

I don't get it. Ernests' bandwagon should be empty by now. The only way Gulbis can get back to the top is to hire a decent coach, and soon.

 It became embarrassing more than a few months back... :tape: :o

Ram is a player I think will struggle to really cut it against the top 100 (although he isn't a bad player himself), so this is a bit of a boost for him. Will be tough for him to beat Ljubo though.

he doesn't care he doesn't need the money he just probably plays for the sake of doing something. Has talent might do a surprise here of there in the next 10 years but really no use supporting someone who really doesn't give a $hit.

This time next year Gulbis will be going for the calendar slam after beating Berdych in the finals of the other three slams.

Gulbis does not give a toss. I am sure he would continue to lose matches even if he joined the WTA tour.

Players without a game plan need confidence to succeed. Gulbis is running low on both.

This thing is starting to look more permanent than a slump...he needs to reverse out of it fast.

people on this forum are generally wrong when it comes to predictions like this

if they wouldn't we all would be rich

Isn't it a bit unusual for a 1st round qualifying match to warrant a separate thread, unless it involves a former top player coming back from slump/injury, or a promising newcomer?

Is it highlighted because it's Ram winning or because it's Gulbis losing? If it's Ram, fair enough, but I think Gulbis should be allowed to slip into obscurity unless and until he can get some form back.

agreed, but you'll always see useless threads about Gulbis and Dimitrov even if they lost an unimportant match

As I said earlier i guess the main problem is the coaching.

Without good coaching he is a simple ballbasher + self confidence is low.

It started when Dodig trashed him on indoor courts in Zagreb this year.

It was a big blow because we know how 'good' this Dodig actually is.
