Never thought Del Pussy would come back in the TB after being 2-4 down.

He should have won the 1st set earlier though.

Too good del Potro, had plenty of chances in the 1st set, but couldn't convert until the TB. Then coming back from 5-2 down in the TB, once he won it, then all over.

murray will probably win montreal and become number 2.

question: if that happens, will the atp have to change the draw of cinci and switch nadal's place for murray's? if that happens then federer and murray will have to face each other in the semis

Henry Chinaski

very good start to the match. descended into a bit of a shitfest after that. well that's exaggerating a bit but it was scrappy as hell.

that amazing lob by del potro at **2-5 down in the breaker was the turning point. it was over once the first set was.

del struggled badly against slice at times. he's gonna have to improve dramatically on that if he's ever going to withstand the superior slices of murray and fed.

Amazing play from 2-5 down in the tiebreak as well.

What surprises me is that Del Potro struggled when playing hanescu yesterday, but today he looks fresh and he did a good job.

Though, JMDP, you can't win a match against murray with 28UEs

DelPots was really weak first set, other than the serve, and even that abandoned him near the end. Bottle job on the bps, and the basic errors really started to rack up. Then, screws up the tiebreak, and....... I was cursing him something awful at this point (rather large amount of cash on him).

Then, out of nowhere, hit the accelerator, blew Nadal off court, won the TB, then broke him to 15, match over. Quality.

V. interesting rematch tomorrow with Roddick. Fortunately it's a night game for DelPot, after a late finish here.

rusty rafa..a good practice match though to recover his form. the result is expected. In my opinion, I don't think it was on-court coaching. It was like he was complaining about how his body could not move well (he shook his shoulder to show how uncomfortable he was). I bet he felt devastated. But it's a good try out facing a top ten player. He should do his homework from now on. Baby steps champ!!

Murray needs to win v Tsonga and then he would be #2 I think.

Think so:

Nadal 9285 - Olympics (800) + Canada qf (180) = 8665

Murray 8260 - Olympics (10!) + Canada final (600) = 8850

If Murray loses to Tsonga he's 55 short, would need to outperform Nadal by one round in Cinci (and I notice Nadal has Karlovic in R16, ugly opponent if you're rusty).

I'm impressed how Del Potro has improved his tennis this year. At the beginning of this season he was still one-dimensional player who simply learned perfectly how to beat mug opponents. That tournament in Miami changed him. Obviously in mental department because when he overcame Nadal form 2 breaks down, realised it isn't very tough to win difficult sets and matches against weaker opponents. Also today showed mental strenght when he wasted 2 sp's and found himslef 1:4* down in the tie-break, he stayed cool. Given his game plan I noticed his big improvement in defensive. In difficult positions on the court he chooses best angles, another thing - his backhand down the line. Last year almost non-existent stroke, especially when he stood inside the court, was playing backhand crosses all the time like a mug of the highest order. Now he varieties backhands, and his net play is also better, plays rarely at the net but his volley technique is quite good (today brilliant stop-volley at 5:5 in the tie-break).

Del Potro def. Nadal 7-6(5) 6-1

1st set (79 minutes)

that second set was ****** of the highest order, that backhand of Del Pony was Nalbandian-like when Nalby played Nadal, just too much for Nadal to handle today, great result for Del Pony and a well deserved victory, just too good.

not a nice moment when Nadal was seeking some coaching at the changeover, he should have been given a warning for that.

No coaching...just frustration about the rustiness.

Though Rafa clearly choked the first set tiebreak...and tanked the second, all in all, a nice tourney for him. And, I think it bodes well for the Open. He was hitting most of his shots against a Del Potro...and his movement looked pretty good.

This was simply a case of "Lendl-itis"...working on one's game, not to win the match or title, but to be best prepared for the U.S. Open.

The old Rafa? Would have killed himself to win...probably could have rallied, and then what? Would have to face a hot Roddick...and probably Murray...both long, grinding matches...Who cares at this point? Two or three matches at these MS events is all that matters.'

Would have been nice to win the first set, but well done enough.

Congrats to Del Potro...and a mini-boo to Rafa for not being as friendly to him at the handshake.

No coaching...just frustration about the rustiness.

you don't speak to your coach for about a minute in the change-over to complain about rustiness, also the way the team looked away and pretended nothing is happeneing when the camera showed them was suspicious, anyway it's not the first time Nadal and his team does that.

Excellent from Del Potro...it may not have been ugly but after that first set you could sense the confidence coming from Juan Martin.

Looks like we need Nadal to play more to see how he really is doing...this week's been a little weird for him

Glad you timed the entire sequence of events. If you listened in carefully, however, you would have heard the real conversation. However, I forgot, the fans of Federer not only believe the man can perform miracles, they too can perform minor ones: like discerning conversations when NOT present...based simply on fleeting mannerisms and gestures:rolleyes:

At least now we know where Nadal stands, he is not the player who benefit much from not playing, true his knees gets better, but he is losing the balance of his shots. No doubt that he will perform better with more matches under his belt, but the question is when and if he is able at all to get back into the form from previous year and the first half of this year. Del Potro was excellent today, especially in mental department, I was quite impressed with his defense today, he was running a marathon on a lot of points from side to side and still managing to reach the ball in time and even hitting more than a decent returns.

pony is such a mono dimensional player, all he does is bash the ball as hard as he can. If nadal could swing that serve out more today, he would have caned the pony back into the stable! all a player needs 2 do is execute loads of variety like drop shots, slices etc and the pony's ball bashing game will fall apart

Unlike dedicated double haters, I couldn't watch this one. Sounds like Del Potro reaffirmed how underrated he is as a USO contender.
As for Rafa who knows when or whether he comes back as the player he once was. The things he says now are more pessimistic as opposed to realistic. The Nadal some people love to hate is back. The one they hate to hate isn't.

I love this. I thought Nadull was supposed to be the absolute freshest player of the pack. Well at least all the Rafatards have been echoing this for a while. And then when he finally loses, more excuses come along the way. If he isn't fresh now, imagine how fresh is going to be at the US Open because he obviously isn't getting another 2 month break.

What does he says? I only read his comments on his web site and it was nowhere near pessimistic.

As for the match I couldn't watch it  I hope for a better display in Cinci.

Well played by JMDP, that lob at 2-5 in the TB proved to be decisive. Very useful match for Rafa, he looked better than I thought he would. A few more matches under his belt in Cinci and he will arrive in reasonable conditions to NYC

I actually preferred Nadull to win this match. Fuck my life.

Nadull couldn't even win the TB being 4-2 up. What a mug. I was cheering for him to take the first set.

Congrats to Del Pony. One match away from his first Mickey Masters final. :D

The ugly pony takes advantage of Nadals top spin balls that sit up. If Murray does get past Tsonga to meet Del Fucktard, the beatings will be very much for him indeed. Hit the ball as hard as he wants, Andy will retrieve all day, plus 28 U.E. LOL

^ Joke.

Seriously though, not too surprised at the result, even though I predicted a Rafa win, he was clear to see he still needs to regain sharpness.

Well done to Del Potro.

He has a good chance to make his first 1000 final.

Was there any problem with his shoulder today?

This Pony is too good. I am soo impressed with his play in 2nd set made Nadal look average.

Nadal is still 1/2 a step slow but otherwise seems to be playing almost as well as he can on this type of court. He nowhere near a top 3 favourite for USO imo, although we will wait and see what happens in Cincy.

Rafa just doesnt seem to have any confidence, understandably, his shots are short and without much pace.

Not worth reading into this victory, Del Potro almost blew it despite Nadals problems. Wouldnt shock me if Del Potro found himself in a similair position to Nadal in the near future if he keeps insisting on playing back to back tournies all summer.

Potro is a machine, consistant power, consistant depth, great serve and huge hitting off both wings, if hes on form you might as well give the guy a walk over. Well done Delpo

Was there any problem with his shoulder today?

No, he looked awesome in my opinion, served well and hit huge groundstrokes so if that shoulder is a problem i would be suprised.

No offence to Rafa, but I'm glad with this result...sounds like he was on borrowed time anyway. Should be a fantastic match with Roddick tonight. :yeah:

pony is such a mono dimensional player, all he does is bash the ball as hard as he can.

Mono dimensional player? No that is Federer :p

Nadal is done. Murray will get the No.2 spot either this weekend or next week.
The real question now is when Nadull will fall from the Top 5 and then from the Top 10.

In fact, I don't think that Nadal will win another single match again :eek:

Oh well , a decent run by Rafa nonetheless , the important thing is that he gets his game back right now so these couple of matches are good for him. On to Cincinnati....

im just amazed at del potro's movement. for someone his height how does he shift and slide around the court like he does.

his backhand was amazing last night, i just really enjoy watching him play.

hope he wins it all now, he has the game, hes in form.

Del Potro's backhand amazing last night? what?!

It was unbelievably flaky until he got the double break.

Del Potro is relentless when he plays well. I think it will be another close match against Roddick today. I hope Del Potro wins, he is stepping up toward the top 4 and I guess in terms of his game right now nobody could say he is that far behind them even if the biggest results haven't arrived yet.

Decent return tournament for Nadal, can't be expected to come out of the blocks with a perfect rythm and losing to Del Potro is not a shameful thing either.

Nadal was better than I expected in the first set. He's still not comfortable hitting his inside out forrehand and forehand down the line though. He kept hitting nearly every forehand to Del Potro's backhand which he wouldn't do normally.
