Oh great.. Karlovic in Montreal and Isner in Cincy.. his two best friends on the tour :smash:

Ridiculous :D pahh, so I think from now on these two opponents should be impossible match-ups for the rest of Tommys career:haha:

Well, he overcame Karlovic, so screw Isner. ;) Also, he won their last encounter last year pretty comfortably, while the two losses before were both pretty close.

But right now I think the more interesting question is whether Tommy will show up at all ...

Lugburz
08-15-2009, 11:50 AM
Well, regarding closely Tommy got best quarter. Sure its better to have Djokovic and Davydenko than Tsonga/Nadal, Roddick/Fed, Murray/DelPonny..

vs Isner: Hopefully Tommy overcame big servers-bad luck-mania as he's looking better then last few years when losing to Isner,etc.. So straight win is expected but we'll see, still long way to go....

16681
08-15-2009, 12:01 PM
Oh I don't like the 1st Rd Match :scared: John is another one of those big servers who also happens to be very tall  No wonder Tommy doesn't like playing them he must feel like he is being bombed from above with tennis balls :armed:

thefly
08-15-2009, 01:24 PM
I also think that draw isn't too bad. Sure, players like Isner are an all the bigger problem for Tommy if he isn't consistent on his own serve, and we saw him struggling in that regard over the last weeks. So we'll see how that's turning out.
But then there's a good chance that he'll meet Djokovic again in a third round, probably the one top 8 player Tommy would have the most confidence against right now. And Davy ... not one of Tommy's favourites, sure, but this guy has to be a little tired at the moment.

This one could shape up to be pretty interesting. Let's hope Tommy isn't bothered by this blister anymore ...

This tournament is very important as the week after rankings will define the seedings for the US Open...With a deep run, the Top 16 will be possible (Nalbandian cancelled the Open so the Top 17 would be enough). However, I really hope that he shows up at first. If he beats Isner, anything will be possible. Come on!!!

Shouldn't a top 24 seeding already be enough to avoid the top 8 in the first 3 rounds or something like that?
Forgive me, I'm past the exam period this semester and switched off my brain, someone has o spell this stuff out for me. ;)

In GS yes, but not masters events, but not even 15 seed would help avoid the top 8 there by round 3

Isner is very inconsistent. When he is in his "zone", he is difficult for anyone to beat. But when he isn't, he will frequently err with groundstrokes, so if his opponent can get into the rally, he can beat Isner. Of course, Tommy will have to serve well against him so as not to give John back any breaks Tommy earns, but Isner is not a superior returner. I agree that Mr. Blister is Tommy's biggest opponent right now. If it isn't fully healed, I hope Tommy will skip Cincinnati, play the Pilot Pen maybe, then go to NY.

That would be senseless. If he plays Pilot Pen Tennis, he'll probably have a deep run, playing the semifinals or finals at the weekend one day before the start of his favourite tournament. He would be tired and the risk of going out early would rise.

Au contraire. It is highly risky to go into the US Open having not played competitive matches in nearly 3 weeks. That's the position he would be in if he can't play Cincinnati and chooses not to play Pilot Pen. He also is in control of exactly how much effort he expends. I'm not saying he would tank but he could decide to pace himself. Note also that a number of other top 30 (but not the most elite) players who feel they need matches typically play there.

Maybe you're arguing an alternative - that he should play Cincinnati even if the blister is NOT healed? That could knock him out of the Open altogether, since it would further delay healing. That's why I say it all depends on the blister.

sundog that is great news :D However, if Tommy is going to start practicing this quickly how bad could that blister have been in the first place :confused:All I know is that he was looking at it ALOT during practice. It's not bandaged and he kept putting talc or some kind of powder on it, probably to keep it dry. I saw it when he held his hand up and it is in a bad spot. But it didn't seem to affect his hitting so that's good. He's scheduled to practice again tomorrow afternoon and his first match should be Tues.

Mae, they showed it on the Tennis Channel during the Gonzo match - including having the trainer SHAVE it with a sharp instrument to try to enable him to grip the racquet. Owwww! It was clearly visible and couldn't have been in a worse place. He had no choice to but to retire.

and may I add - Go Tommy! and have fun, Sundog. Hope it's not too hot this week.

I got to see the Match for a change. And I just don't know what has happened with Tommy  That winning "look" he had about him not too many Tournaments ago is just not there anymore. It's like he has gone back to earlier in the year when he wasn't doing well at all  Other than that blister I haven't heard of any physical problems, but he definitely seems to have lost that eager happy feel good "look".

Lugburz

I will have to disagree, actually this time we shouldn't be pissed off at Tommy at all. Surely ,he had some chances and missed those, but for the first time I actually saw why he doesn't like to play big servers. I mean he looked so bored on a court, with a good reason if I may add. And even then he tried to be in the match,to me having match in his hands, but the guy like Isner-well I definitely don't have nice words for them!
What else can you do with a guy who was determinant only to play the TB o the 3rd,he was looking forward to it,and when the aces and winning weren't there, all of a sudden he came up with huge serves to finish Tommy off,in a way that all the people on the stands were like WTF? The guy doesn't deserves any credit, and I really really feel sorry for Tommy--he mst be mad as Hell,,surely I know how he feels, because the feeling is mutual :(
