Well, that had to happen at some point ... Montréal Draw (http://rogerscup.com/men/english/PDF/MDS.pdf).

TommyB called this a "test" in the other thread. I disagree. That's putting it optimisically. I think we can kiss this one goodbye. You'll have to drag Tommy on court for this first round match, that's how motivated I see him for this one.

Pity, really.

TommyB.
08-07-2009, 10:10 PM
Ah come on. Yes it's a tough draw, I don't like it, but there's no reason to give up here and now. We can't get cakewalk draws all the time. ;) And something like revenge should be enough motivation right? :p

Tommy to make the 1/4s, optimism all the way!

thefly
08-07-2009, 11:45 PM
It's not the overall tough draw. Hell, I wouldn't mind Roger in the first round, if that were possible. It's just ... as far as I imagine having gotten to know Tommy over the years, I see him already being annoyed as shit the moment he steps onto the court with Karlovic.

But maybe he'll prove me wrong ...

Oh yeah Karlovic (who should be banned from tennis) in R1 (h2h 1-4), then maybe the one he just lost against (1-3) and after that it could be Davydenko (the small, ugly Russian) (1-4). He'll really like that draw. :D
Well, lots of opportunities to get revenge, Tommy always says that's important for him. ;)

This is the most worst-case scenario, Tommy could have chosen. This is...shit. Something like the super maximum credible accident :o
Karlovic-Gonzalez-Davydenko-Murray-Federer-Roddick/Djokovic
No way to see Tommy gaining points here., I really hope he proves me wrong...

Ad Wim

Karlovic is not so much of a bad draw, he will win that one considering both forms. But Gonzalez will be very tough, hope he is tired if he reached the final today. Still I think that is 50-50, as well as Davy. Can't see him beat Murray though, but QF would be great already.

Hope it was true that LA and Washington were warm-ups and now he is going full pull. Then nice things can happen.

I think TommyB. is right.. indeed a tough draw, but it even could have been worse than that. Imagine, you get a mug in first round action and then Federer.. that's worse than Karlovic and Gonzo. I mean, against Dr. Ivo it is always the same... you have to serve well and try to get back some of that crushing serves.. if you do that, you have to win the point for sure.. and if not, then you have to be patient all the time and highly concentrated in the decisive tie-break at the end of eacht set. Sounds easy yeah.. but it is possible. And then Gonzalez.. revenge for sure.. think he can beat Del Pony today, so he will be tired.. also great chance in this encounter.. finally Davydenko, but who says that he gets to the R16? Well, played great last time, totally inform player.. but everything on clay, so why Mathieu oder even then Tommy could not beat him?

So, my first post here in the Tommy board.. absolutely my favourite player. Nice to see some other fans here and there ;)

Yeah, good to have you here, tds.

The only good thing about such a draw is that there isn't really much room for disappointment. Each and every single win would be huge, so even surviving that first round could fill Tommy with much confidence, considering his personal struggle with players like Karlovic. And then I'd actually really like to see a rematch with Gonzalez, Tommy's always pretty fired up when a revenge is in store.

We'll see what happens.

Tommy is capable of playing much better, for an entire match, than he did in the last two tournaments. If he decides to focus, he certainly is capable of beating Karlovic. He needs to return to using his excellent mind as a weapon.

Maybe they are obliged to put one doubles match on the center, and Tommy's match is the most attractive one tomorrow. Who knows. I'm curious why Robredo has to play on that court 9 as well - there can hardly be enough Spaniards on the second Stadium court. ;)

Hi guys ,I'm back!

gotta admit nice reading to all missed threads while I was gone... Just got back from camping which lasted for about 8-9 days, this is not a place to express my feelings how the trip went,so I'd just say it was phenomenal!
There were hard days when I was in a dilemma should I or shouldn't I go home to watch Tommy. Sadly I really wasn't able, but I was in touch with my dad for every second when Tommy played!..Last year it was way to easier to get away and watch 'every' USO match that Tommy played, but this time I was far away from home and it was pretty difficult for me to miss it even it wasn't such a big tour, but to me every tour that Tommy plays is HUGE!
But enough talking ,I'm now aware of difficult draw at Rogers Cup,and have seen a lot of fear in here. I'm probably too optimistic when Tommy steps on court so I'm not that competent but at least we can hope!
I know the World would be happier if Karlovic retires but that's just the way it is,so I really hope Tommy will beat him ! Auf Geht's

Losing a set to Ivo is one thing ... but Karlovic's serve stats are far from impressivve: 6 aces, 2 DF's, 48% first serve - I know that this obviously doesn't represent his service strength completely, but still ...

Oh I understand now. I thought the way posts were being written that may be he had a problem just with Ivo. So you can add other names to the list like Sam, John,
Andy Roddick so it is just not Ivo. Since Tommy has played Roddick pretty well may be it is more of a case of just not liking to play TALL players who are big servers

Mae, can you get The Tennis Channel in your area? They have a lot of coverage this week, but we won't see Tommy unless and until he or his opponent is the highest ranked player at the time they are playing. And, even if Tommy is able to beat Gonzalez, likely he will next face Davydenko, not a big fan draw for US TV. Livescores is about it for us.

Yeah those are the greatest wins, when you don't expect anything... I wasn't as pessimistic as some other guys here, but when I saw the first set going away as always there really wasn't too much hope left.

I'm just watching Gonzalez vs Raonic. The Canadian kid is playing some impressive tennis in front of his home crowd and Gonzalez, who isn't even playing poorly, is struggling, lost the first set and just saved breakpoints in the second. So, not sure yet who will be Tommy's opponent, it could also be the world number 679. ;) And if not I hope there will be two looong and exhausting sets for Gonzo. :D

Way to go, Tommy. I'm also surprised that Tommy and Stepanek won their doubles match so comfortably. Both had to play their singles matches not long before, and at least one of their opponents stepped onto the court for the first time yesterday. So good work. I never liked Stepanek, but these two seem to make a pretty good team. Maybe they found together because they are neighbours in Bradenton, who knows. ;)

At first I liked the idea of Tommy playing doubles in Montréal, having at least one or more additional matches even if his singles first round hadn't turned out to be so successful, but now the schedule is getting a little full again. He also has to play doubles today again, and their doubles match isn't even properly scheduled yet, in the OOP it just says their match is still "to be arranged". :p

But whatever, I guess his complete focus will be on Gonzo tonight, and if he can keep up the consistency that he obviously showed in his service games yesterday, that one may turn out to be a completely different match than their encounter last week. And I will surely be here to watch it. ;)

Btw, weird that Gonzo won his first round with exactly the same result as Tommy did.

According to the official Order of Play (http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2009/421/op.pdf), Tommy won't play doubles today so he can fully concentrate on his singles match :)
This means as well that he would play a possible match against Davy early on tomorrow because of the doubles match...But still a way to go ;)

That's good news. Would have been impossible to squeeze that doubles match in there somewhere, with his singles match set that late.

Can someone put in a few words how last meeting between Tommy and Gonzo went ?

Until 5:5 in the first set it was a high quality match, totally even, with good shots from both players. Then Tommy lost his serve (after 30:15 or so I think) and didn't find back into the match. The second set was played poorly by Haas, while Gonzalez was solid.

Overall Tommy let Gonzalez put too mich pressure on him with his huge forehand. He needs to find a way to be the aggressive player in the match today, maybe attack Gonzalez on his backhand and not let him play his game. Raonic did that very well yesterday and almost beat him.

I do have the Tennis Channel, but after hounding my TV provider for years to get it I find it is mostly worthless   The best coverage I have found is on ESPN2
when they are showing tennis which sadly isn't all that often now. Since American tennis has gone downhill the TV coverage is poor and I have noticed when I do have TV coverage that the attendance at the U.S. Tournaments are small. You know a lot of fans disguised as empty seats :p But the Tournament in Canada seems to be doing well.

I disagree! I think it's a great plan, last time he didn't seem to be able to beat Gonzo's power with superior baseline control so this time he's closing out more points early...

...and he's broken!!!

Thanks :D But I hate to hear that Tommy doesn't seem happy because when Tommy plays his best tennis anyone can tell that he is indeed very happy. There is just that "look" about Tommy when he is going to play well. The last couple of Tournaments I did see of him in the U.S. on TV it was like he was trying to fake the "look", but he clearly didn't really have it and lost both of those Matches.

I also like seeing some S&V. He does it so well, of course shouldn't to it 100 % but occasionally that's a very good tactic and something I missed in his hardcourt matches so far. Going to Gonzalez' backhand and asking him questions, that's fine. He won't continue hitting backhand winners all the time. ;)

Kiefer was in the same situation in the quarterfinal of Gstaad, needed treatment but couldn't take a medical timeout - he retired because of that, being a set up. Tommy did the right thing by just taking a warning and then a point penalty instead.

I don't blame him at all for retiring. If any of you play, you know you can't grip the racquet with a blister in that place, certainly not well enough to play against the best players in the world. I think he badly wanted to defeat Gonzalez and was in the match until he had no other choice.

Thanks for the info. That's very bad news; not surprising, though, because blisters take a long time to heal fully, and if he comes back too soon, the blister will re-open. It might be good news for the Pilot Pen tournament, though! If he can't play in Cincinnati, maybe he'll want to get in a few matches before the US Open and if so, PP will be only too happy to welcome him.

I believe he would have won that match last night had the blister not appeared. Of course, that's easy to say, since it can't be proven.
