Certinfy

Meanings:

1. A woman who cohabits with a man without being legally married to him.

2. In certain societies, such as imperial China, a woman contracted to a man as a secondary wife, often having few legal rights and low social status.

3. A woman residing in a harem and kept, as by a sultan, for sexual purposes.

4. Old-fashioned a woman living with a man as his wife, but not married to him.

5. A woman who cohabits with an important man.

In historical context that's probably true.

Essentially it's just a mistress. It is said that kings of old had 100's of them.

3. A woman residing in a harem and kept, as by a sultan, for sexual purposes.

That's the main context I usually associate and see concubine used with. So yeah it's an odd word choice.

Again a thing where the sentence is more than right: "Leave translation to translators". In French (which is Stan's native language) the word for "female partner" (with which you aren't still married) is concubine.

Congrats Stan, his "concubine" and all the best to the baby :)[

Baby boom in Switzerland
Meanings:

I first knew the 2nd meaning, by a Chinese movie (I even have it in DVD at home). Some years later, there was a new law in Brazil talking about "concubinate" and it was about recognizing the rights of people in situation 1, and it sounded odd to me the name.

It has a rather nasty subtext in my language as well, and I guess in many other languages too. Very uncalled for to use such a word for a guy's girlfriend who has been with him for very long time already. What's wrong with 'girlfriend'?
And sheezzz, in Europe, it's perfectly normal to have kids with your GF/BF before getting officially marriaged...

All the best of luck to the happy couple, may their kid be healthy and happy indeed. :D

What's wrong with just girlfriend? We don't have any proper word for "girlfriend" in French. The French words for "girlfriend" (copine, ...) wouldn't sound serious enough here, it's normal in French to have picked "concubine" over "girlfriend" in this case. The person who wrote this just stuck too much to the French usage and made a literal translation.

In French I find it more respectful to call her "concubine" than "girlfriend" (which would sound more like a teenager thing and not very appropriate here since they're having a child).

Of course. Alas my knowledge of the French language is not good enough to recognize that mistake. No probs, hope you accept my apologies for a misunderstanding, here. :)

In French I find it more respectful to call her "concubine" than "girlfriend" (which would sound more like a teenager thing and not very appropriate here since they're having a child).

I see. Well it's completely the opposite where I live - even elderly men speak about their 'girlfriend' ("vriendin") when they are having a relationship with a woman and aren't (yet) married. 'Concubine', in contrary, has a very negative subtext over here :o.
Interesting to learn those differences in meanings of the same word in different languages, indeed. :)

Yes, the usual older woman clichee, sorry, but I couldn't resist. :D

But seriously:
I didn't know that "concubine" is a normal french word which is used for "girl friend". Until now I've always only heard about "copine" or "petite amie", although the latter would probably be not the right word, since it makes me think of teenager couples.

In French "concubine" means that you live with the person, while "copine" or "petite amie" not necessarily.

No, not all, but at 35, no woman will be prettier than when she was 25, for instance. It's simple. Wawrinka is just the victim of the good old impregnate-aroo. She wants to live off his money for the rest of his life. She said it with all the words in that article Eden posted. She apparently was just waiting for "the right father" i.e. a rich gullible young mug.

I'm not even starting on Brazilian emigrants. Some are even worse than the ones living here.

I actually know some girls that look better at 30 than at 20 (though I have to admit it's pretty rare) :p

Ilham was a well-known people here (French speaking part of CH) when Stan was still a junior, I think she comes from a wealthy family, not sure she needs Stan's money... When she said she was waiting the "right guy" I think she just meant she's known many guys along the way and feels Stan's the one  I don't know them, so can't really tell, but she comes as a rather down-to-earth woman if you ask me (as for her not being pretty, that again is a subjective question).

I totally agree to LaneLS88.

I am happy for Stan like I was happy for Federer.
For sure it is not easy to live in a relationship with someone who is famous.
I would just imagine I want to spend a night dacing somewhere and everyone allways wants to take a photo (etc.)

For millions of people it doesn´t matter how they look including most of the people who post here. Noone would judge on some forum whether you are "hot" or not.
And I guess that for the majority the looks aren´t that important either. Things like character and going together "through rough times" are often far more important.

Leave the private live of the tennis players to them.
You can feel happy about someone starting a family but to judge about his/her relationship is just crazy and to judge about the looks of a friend of some tennis player is even more crazy. She didn´t apply for a model context at the end of the day :p

I love that some of the posters hellbent on moving this out of GM are also willing to go deepest into "personal" comments about the concubine in question.

I didn't read the article since I don't know french. But reading what you said, I was a bit shocked, cos you are implying that she said she wants to live off his money... and I thought what person in her right mind will admit such thing to the press. Good thing I keep reading:

I don't know, maybe I really should bother to "babel" the article to understand myself.
But really, why can't ppl just be happy for them and move on. We don't even know her and it takes a lot of braincells to past judgment on people that we don't know. If nothing, Stan seems to be a good guy or at least a normal folks like you and me (as compare to a criminal or terrorist or evil figure, if you know what I mean), and the least one can give him (if one can't give him the blessing), is some respect for his choice for the love one. And she seems harmless too, just because she's a lot older than Stan does not necessarily means she has his baby for other reasons other than love, or does it? I say we should give her the benefit of a doubt, unless you know for sure, I really think people should refrain themselves from insulting her. Then again, this is GM, I suppose it's silly to ask people to respect tennis players and the people related to them.

Exactly, you've seen "the" pic, which means you've seen a pic: something that's commonly two-dimensional - based upon that your statement of her being old and not pretty relies again on a imperfect rendition of reality. This leads us to the axiomatic conclusion that you can only express yourself imprecisely on that specific matter, anyway.

Nice try, dude ;-)

Well, of course you're naturally bound to your masculinity due to which you estimate women old (in your case:unattractive) much earlier than they do themselves and therefore I'm not gonna blame you for it. Nonetheless, my point stands because you still judge her by reference to any picture.
