DC deliciousness - Tommy in Washington

Tommy's 10th seed, which comes with a first round bye. Then probably a Spaniard, Ferrero or Robredo. Other seeds in his quarter are Gonzalez and Andreev.

Full draw (http://www.leggmasontennisclassic.com/upload/966.PDF)

DC is a 500 event, so lot's of points to win. Go Tommy!

actually this time,I expected a little bit easier draw, but what the hell, with this game and look on the court anything is possible by ''this'' Tommy Haas! Auf Geht's!

Whoops, of course what I wrote is wrong, first up in Tommy's 2nd round is Dancevic or a qualifier.

It's a funny draw overall...
Seed 1 vs Seed 16
2 vs 15
3 vs 14
...
8 vs 9
:D

Yeah, I read about that in the other forum. Weird. Too much of a coincidence, actually. But what the hell ...

Fish (8th seed on this draw) has withdrawn from LA with an injury. If he withdraws from Legg Mason, would Tommy move up as a seed, or would they put in a Lucky Loser? Qualifying is going on this weekend. I'm going to go to the final and maybe during the week if Tom is playing. Will post a report if I go.

The fields seem to get stronger IMHO as these Tournaments go on toward the U.S. Open. Because more players from other countries start coming to the U.S. (and Canada) to play in at least some of these Tournaments. I was so disappointed after L.A. I think I will keep my expectations low this time.

USTA upped the point value for DC and dropped it for Indy. That's a major reason for the greater player interest.

2nd round opponent will be Dancevic. He's pretty dangerous on American hardcourts, Tommy should definitely pay attention!

That happens a lot. One player has wasted break points in a game and then gets broken on his own serve  I wanted a two Set Match myself, but not because of time since I live in the Eastern part of the U.S. I wanted Tommy to have an easy win, but now if he wins it will have to be in 3

And he was already up 30-0 in that game. Too bad, considering the first break against him was stupid to begin with.

Now an easy hold to 1-1. But 1st serve again down to 40%.

nice serve stats ;)

some sentences from Tommy after his match:

“Any win is a good win and if it weren’t for one bad game in the second set it could easily have been 6-1, 6-4,” said Haas. “But then it became a battle and anything can happen in a third set. He started to believe he could win.

“I’m still not completely happy with my game; it’s not where I want it to be. But at the same time I don’t want to peak too early before the US Open.

“It’s always tough going from one tournament to the next if you don’t have many days to prepare,” he said. “It’s a different heat in LA – it’s more humid here – and the court in LA was a little rougher and slower.”

thefly
08-05-2009, 10:46 AM
Ha, I went to bed at 2-2 in the third; after he hold that service game and saved three or four bp's, I somehow knew he would win this one. ;)

Good thing that he's not happy with his game yet. He's certainly struggling a bit with his serve. But as he said, no need to peak too early, lol. :p

Tommy takes on Ferrero tonight, expected winner over Robredo (who I think has the better game on hard court, but just doesn't play well these days). Interesting match-up. Ferrero is also experiencing a kind of resurgence this year. Most results on clay of course, but a good run on grass as well.
There's no question that Tommy's the better man on this surfance, but he certainly has to come up with the goods tonight.

Thanks a lot! That's definitely what makes Tommy so special these days:
-coming down from 2-5 against chokeschreiber in Halle
-saving mp against cilic in wimby
-saving some set points against safin

and now again..

Seems as if Tommy gains the luck he missed at many points in his career, great :)

TennisFan2012
08-07-2009, 01:39 AM
OK, I drove out just to see Tommy and left during the first set of Hewitt-Del Potro, so I'm home again! Ferrero was hitting low and flat but made some errors to allow Tommy back into the first set (Tommy was steadier at the end than JC), then Tommy's errors seemed to add up in the 2nd set. JCF also seemed to surprise TH with some excellent gets after what appeared to be TH winners. TH went back into the smart playing mode in Set 3 and eased his way into the QF! Go Tommy!

The crowd was definitely with Tommy though DC crowds are relatively quiet.

It was nice and cool (extremely unusual for DC this time of year), but Tommy was his usual sweaty self and changed shirts at the end of each set. It's supposed to get warmer tomorrow then hot Saturday and Sunday.

thefly

ESPN2 begins broadcasting at noon, so chances are good!

Gonzalez ist certainly a tough opponent. We all remember their last two encounters in 2007, first the sick loss in the Aussie Open semi, and then Tommy's just as safe revenge later in Indian Wells. All that doesn't matter much today - I think it is in Tommy's hands again. If he gets his game together, and his serve more consistent, than he will win this. It's Gonzalez first appearance on the USO Series, and he didn't have any other noteworthy results on hard court so far this year ...

This forehand is just incredible. But Tommy gives him too much balls on his forehand, nearly all retunrns come to the FH...

shadows
08-07-2009, 06:00 PM
^ that is in part due to how much gonzo opens up his forehand side though, hitting the ball to the backhand side often just means he'll hit an inside out forehand from further out of the court! =p

it's alright, plenty of time for Tommy to get back into this.
