It was a beautiful match. Safin beat Federer when the latter was still at his peak and playing perfect tennis. It was probably the last time we saw Safin play that focused and well.

This.

The AO2005 Safin-Feds match was one of the very few where BOTH players indeed played their best tennis (which certainly wasn't the case in the 'Most Overhyped Match' of the decade ;)).
Fantastic performance from both, too bad Safin thereafter never again reached that level of playing.

The difference between this match and the Wimbledon match is clear, Federer is at the peak of his powers in this encounter in Australia, he clearly wasn't at Wimbledon.

Two guys playing their best tennis, hitting the ball hard and flat and smacking winners left and right. Quality ball striking. I can't say the same about this years Wimbledon final or in 2008. People here will prefer the Wimbledon 08 final, because it was more recent and Safin soon went down the slide months after this match.

Whether they like it or not, this was the best match of the decade.

The Federer-Safin match was excellent but I thought the first couple of sets were slightly dull. Sure, both players were banging the ball, but there were a lot of errors, and Safin's footwork was shaky in the first set. The quality picked up later in the match, especially when Federer saved the MP's in the 5th set.

And the 2008 Wimby final was better than 2009...they were different types of matches, but the 2009 match was dictated too much by the serve in my opinion, and there were some excellent shots in 2008.

One of my favourites, despite the outcome. Had a lot of quality tennis and high drama. Also, the momentum switched back and forth numerous times, Roger storming ahead in the 4th set tie-break, Safin saving a matchpoint with awesome tennis and then Roger clawing his way back into the match from being down 2-5, saving nummerous matchpoints only to lose in overtime. Amazing!

Ummmm, nobody is saying the Verdasco Nadal match wasn't good, it was, but I think Marat Safin and Roger Federer are capable of more stunning tennis than either of those two.

Nadal hardly achieves his wins from playing great looking tennis and hitting winners left and right.
