LOS ANGELES - Australian Chris Guccione has earned a wild card into the LA Tennis Open Presented by Farmers Insurance Group after winning the ninth annual Wild Card Shoot-Out on Friday at UCLA.

Guccione defeated American Donald Young 11-9 in the final tie-break to determine the wild card.

“It’s a lot better than playing three qualie matches,” Guccione said. “I just found out about this a couple days ago. I feel like I’m playing well. I just won the Aptos Challenger, so obviously I’m hitting the ball pretty well. This is great.”

Guccione suffered one loss in the Group Stage of the Shoot-Out, while Young was undefeated, meaning had to beat Young twice in a row to advance. He did, winning the final two tie-breaks 10-8 and 11-9.

This will be the second main draw appearance for Guccione in LA. In 2007, he lost in the first round in a third-set tie-break to Marat Safin.

Good job, Gooch :yeah:

It is an absolute outrage that he wasn't given one in the first place. This is the next US Open champion we are talking about here.

He defeated Britton and Devvarman (twice)

Better player won. Young doesn't deserve a wildcard.

Why did he play Devvarman twice, but not against the 3rd player of his group?

I see that Donald Young did also enter the qualifying draw (where he was ranked 4), won two matches and has a match today to earn entry into the draw by right. Given the number of wildcards he's enjoyed over the years, I'm a bit surprised to see him being allowed two bites at the cherry, so to speak.

I think the way they did the group thing was
Match 1: Player A vs Player B
Match 2: Player C vs Player D

Match 3: Winner of Matches 1 and 2 play each other
Match 4: Losers of Matches 1 and 2 play each other

Match 5: Loser of match 3 vs winner of match 4

Match 6: Winner of match 5 vs Winner of Match 3

And then the winners of both groups vs each other. A strange way to give the wildcard though over a series of 10 point matches but at least it wasn't just handed out to some player.

Aussie Casrten Ball also taught Donna a lesson, winning 6-3 6-0 in the final round of qualifying.
