There was thread about mentally toughest players, but how about mentally weakest ?

Kiefer is irrelevant, you could have done better and replace him with Crybaby Federer. And I mean Roger.

haas was mentally weak in eralier stages..nowadays he seems to be solid

fat dave isn't that much a choker...(the nadal match wasn't that typical for him) he turned around a lot of 0:2..

I would go for blake..I always have the feeling he coukd lose a match from a big lead

Out of them probably Blake.

Roddick in this list.:haha::haha:

HattonWBA

Dont understand why some are on the list, fair enough with guys like blake and Gasquet but Murray deals very well with pressure considering the british press and his record in big events regardless of not winning one. Djokovic has 4 masters series and a slam and Roddick has won a grand slam, also have you seen roddick and nalbandian davis cup records.

Anyway from the list i would say Mathieu maybe although Acasuso has lost very crucial matches in his time. Good thread though.

Murray is mentally weak , because he can't handle the pressure from british media, fans that claim that he will slam sooner or later etc.:o
Rodduck choked in the 2nd set tiebreak when he could have gone up 2 to 0 in sets, but he missed an easy volley sign of a mentally weak player.:o
Djoker is mentally weak because he couldn't win a match that would give number 2 position in the world several times. Once even losing to Gulbis.lol:o

While the discussion of mentally strongest player has at least some value and it involves proper arguments, this is nonsense. I´ll tell you who the weakest is. It´s someone no one has ever even heard about, he is that weak. Everyone on that list have won important matches and choked away some important ones, like everyone else. Any further discussion is pointless.

some of these players shouldnt be on the list.
Im not a fan of Roddick but his mental toughness is one of his main strengths, except when he plays Federer. Nalbandian has a great record against top players, and has beaten Federer 8 times. He won the Shanghai finals 2005 in 5 sets, I doubt any player could turn that game around after losing the first 2 tie breaks by netcords.
I'm not sure who the weakest player is in the top 100, theres a lot of them, to name a few Blake, Monaco, Acasuso.

Your just pin pointing rare occasions, im pretty sure there have been more ocassions where they have showed mental toughness rather than mental weakness, they are not ranked 3, 4 and 5 for being mental midgets.

Anyway, we all know that a player has to be half decent to get any sort of "Do you think this person is crap?" thread going on MTF. These players are mentally tough, maybe not all day every day but some of these mentioned are certainly not mentally weak.

Mathieu is pretty mentally weak, but in the way that he often loses the close ones or lets a 2 set lead slip way. I would vote Acasuso for his inability to hold big leads...I can remember quite a few times when he's been 5-1 up in a set and lost the set.

wait so that guy was serious? o k then i shall keep my head up for the next one :) a 7-13 record vs nadal is respectable fed fan, considering its 5-4 on hardcourts to federer, the clay h2h is poor, but come on... its rafael nadal were talking about, the greatest clay court player to ever play tennis, by some way too, 80+ winning streak on clay is just beyond rediculous.

SERVivor
07-25-2009, 05:21 PM
Of the list, I'd say Acasuso. I pick him because he not only chokes big leads, but gives up often when he's behind. PHM is weak in that he chokes big leads, but he seems to fight when behind, I.E. he sometimes wins matches after being way behind. For example, he won two matches this week from behind.

Yahoo, great PHM and Blake bashing thread.

Every top100 player must be mentally tough, you should pick another word for this. I mean, losing the match from 2-0 is not always due to choking or being mentally weak.

PHM is weak in that he chokes big leads, but he seems to fight when behind, I.E. he sometimes wins matches after being way behind. For example, he won two matches this week from behind.

Exactly. Mentally weak player would simply throw the match away after being broken for the first time - that's what you can see on futures and some challenger level, there you can see real mental midgets and mugs of the highest calibre. ;)

I would say Gulbis. He has all the weapons but no mentality (for now).

Asking who is the weakest at something is kind of pointless unless you specify something like "in the top 100." The mentally weakest player isn't going to be making a lot of ATP main draws presumably, so we probably wouldn't ever have heard of him.

Andi-M
07-25-2009, 10:23 PM
No player who has won multiple titles, any masters events and especially not players who have won GS should be on that list.

Your saying 3 of the current top 5 are mentally weaker than players ranked 200+? Or are Murray Djoker and Roddick soo ridiucolously talented that they win so often despite having no mental stength whatsoever???

Apparently getting tight or nervous in a match can actually cause you injury since your muscles are not relaxed. People hide behind injuries too often for my liking. It is easy to blame an injury for one's loss.

That's true, that could be what happened.
So you DO know how Nalby lost that AO06.
Being nervous and being mentally weak do not necessarily correlate.

If I had to choose one player off this list I would choose Haas. His temperament gets the better of him sometimes which I put down to a mental thing. A lot of his matches go the distance too so his mental toughness gets a regular workout.

Really though, none of these players should be in this list. There must be heaps others more worthy of this label in the top 100. Gulbis?

Nadal was the mentally weakest player in 2006. Just look at the way he blew the second set in the Wimbledon final of 2006. That immediately makes you the mentally weakest player of tour.

Goldenoldie
07-27-2009, 08:39 AM
Hard to believe that Murray is included in this poll, and even harder to believe that some people have actually voted for him.

His mental strength has won him a number of matches he ought to have lost. He hates losing points, let alone matches, and never gives up till the umpire calls "game, set and match".

Surely his self-belief cannot be questioned, even if that self-belief is sometimes misplaced.
