Thanks Fran, for the info.
The tournament site's draw table is driving me nuts, it stuck at Alberto Martin and won't go down anymore, why can't they just post a pdf . Have to wait for the pdf to be posted on ATP site to see the complete picture.

P.S. I can see it now, have to shrink it to the smallest size to get to the bottom of the draw.

They had a live show for the draw ceremony on the local TV channel yesterday. They have quite a lot of things about the tournament on TLM during the week, if somebody has too much time on his hands:
http://www.tlm.fr/
Moretton (the tournament director) said that the situation is a bit like a few years ago, when Sampras was playing Lyon and clearly above the rest of the bunch. He was talking about Jo. I had to think of Gilles' last interview, I hope he saw it and will be in full "vous allez voir, bande de nazes!" mood. :p

But he'll need to reach the final to add points, I'm not sure how motivated he will be for that event, Valence and Bercy are more important for his ranking which seems to be his big goal for the end of the season.

Truc

Simone is not an easy opponent for Gilles, but he hasn't won a match since August, let's hope he won't get his act together now.
Their h2h: ^^

Please let him play the night session so I can watch him!!!

I've no TV coverage this week but I noticed Eurosport are showing "Live ATP Tennis" next Saturday, wonder if it's from Lyon?
There will be streams though, can someone do the honours and record his match for me? :)

I'm watching Jo's match now on Bet365 :)

turtle-rn

Jo's match was today's fourth on center court so there's hope for tomorrow no? :p

MsTree
10-27-2009, 09:00 PM
Erm thought his was the fifth? Todays OOP has a doubles match before (with a possible court change notice) and a not before time of 7pm for Jo's match. I'll be chuffed if Gillou gets a not before time of 7pm!

MsTree
10-27-2009, 09:24 PM
According to the "Big Match" bit of the front page of the Lyon tournie site they do have a not before time of 7pm :woohoo:
At least I think they do, I get sooooooo distracted by that ATP profile pic of Gillou :inlove:http://www.gptennislyon.com/templates/1/medias/joueurs/edition_2009/thumbnails/Simon_2009_167x204.jpg

lalaland
10-28-2009, 12:41 AM
Gilles' match is at 7pm indeed. Paulo's match, then Benny's follows by Seb in the day session. I guess they have to schedule "Big Match" at the night session then, but I'm not too fond of this kind of scheduling when Benny is playing his R2 before Gilles gets to play his R1 match. Oh well.

Why were they both smiling? Just before he won the game to 4-3?

Cloudygirl
10-28-2009, 08:58 PM
I think because of the call. Gilles had one called against him earlier which he thought was wrong and I think he thought that one was wrong too but it was in his favour so he just grinned. It certainly looked in to me.

Cloudygirl

lalaland
10-28-2009, 08:59 PM

Truc

They do that after each "big match", they give a sort of trophy to the guy who had the fastest serve. I'm not sure it's really the fastest serve because it's always the Frenchie who gets it (Julien, Jo, now even Gilles...) They said he served twice at 200 km/h tonight.

10-28-2009, 09:40 PM
Hey everyone :wavey:
I just saw the end of the match, good to see he is winning.

The "price/check" was given to him because today he was the one whe served the faster 200km/h 2 times in the match :worship:

And the on-court interview:
The guy told him he had a lot of trouble on the court tonight, he even screamed at one point during the first set: "I'm fed up with this match!" Gilles answered that Simone always gives him a lot of trouble indeed. He had always lost to him in straight sets, so he really didn't want their h2h to be 3-0 for Simone.
Then a question about winning the title in Lyon, surely a big goal of him like for all the French players, etc. He didn't sound so enthusiastic and answered that Lyon isn't the French tournament where he feels the best. But he's improving year after year.
Then he was asked about his game and said that even if he wasn't able to do everything he wanted to do tonight, he's definitely feeling better and better at the moment, he has a good feeling on the court.
And about his next opponent (Guez), he said he knows him very well from the Futures and Challengers tour and he was really happy for David when he won 1st match yesterday. He seemed genuinely happy for him, it was quite nice.

His h2h with Guez:
2004 Algeria F2 Futures FR Clay (O) G.SIMON 6-2 6-0
2005 Metz (Qualifying Draw) 32 Hard (I) G.SIMON 6-4 7-6(4)
2008 Marseille 32 Hard (I) G.SIMON 6-2 6-4

That round looks easy, but Bennet is tricky, he loves playing in Lyon (unlike Gilles) and seems in good form right now.

Truc
10-28-2009, 10:51 PM
His audio interview is up:
http://www.fft.fr/gptl/2009/?ID=5520
It's pretty much the same, of course.
He was expecting a difficult match anyway. And he talks again about his bad h2h against Simone, it would have gotten harder and harder to beat him after giving him a 3-0 lead in their h2h, so he badly wanted to win tonight.
He says he played the tiebreaks pretty well, but so did Simone.
The key today was his serve, he served very well. Even in the game he started with 2 DF, he managed to turn it around with 2 aces.
But he had trouble focussing today, he doesn't know why. It took a real effort for him to stay focused and as soon as his concentration was lapsing a bit, he was making silly UE.
It's normal for a first round, though, the point is to find one's bearings and more importantly to come through.
Guez is a counterpuncher, like him, with solid grounstrokes. And he says again that David is a great guy, so he's very happy for him he reached the 2nd round (it was his first win at ATP level at the age of 26, that's why it's such a big deal).

www.tlm.fr usually shows the night matches delayed. They're showing JWT at the moment, then there will be the news and then it should be Gilles. So if you want to follow it in "live" conditions, you can close the scoreboard and watch it in one hour.
It's not good quality, though - and I'm not completely sure they will show Gilles' match.

Not before 16:00.

I listened to his audio interview, he sounds delighted by his game tonight:
http://www.fft.fr/gptl/2009/?ID=5537
He had to save 2 BP in his first service game, which was a good thing because he immediately knew he would have to play very well - and he did. Good win, I was a little worry since Benny has been in great form lately, but so is Gilles.

His h-to-h against the remaining 3 aren't so good. 0-3 against Mika, that ought to change. 0-3 against Ljubo and never play Arno. About time to put some wins to those h to h. C'mon Gilles. Good luck tomorrow.

And tomorrow's BIG MATCH is Clement Vs Ljubo at 2pm. I wonder when's Gilles' match then? before or after?

I had made a complete summary of the interviews and the MTF servers just "swallowed" it. :fiery:

He says he didn't play as well as against Guez, it's too bad we can't find any video of yesterday's match because I found him quite impressive today!
He's not completely happy about his returns today, he finds them too short (it will be important tomorrow since Mika's first serve gives him so much trouble).
And he talks quite a lot about his bad h2h against Mika, he's very aware of it, as usual, he says he doesn't really feel like the favourite going into this match, even though he's far ahead of him in the rankings. But he also says there's not particular reason why he couldn't beat him. He finds interesting to play him here in Lyon where there's not so much at stake for him.

He says in his audio interview they both played well in his opinion, it was a 50-50 story. He never had a chance on Mika's serve, but he felt quite comfortable himself in his service games. But he obviously wasn't meant to win the tiebreak today.
It's so hard to hold your service games during the whole set to reach the tiebreak - to lose two points on your serve because of netcords then is very frustrating.
A journalist says everybody is having a fondness for S&V players like Mika, doesn't he feel that way himself? (What a terrible question to ask when you know how Gilles feels about Mika!) Gilles laughs and says that he doesn't feel like he's playing a S&V player when he plays against Mika, he feels like he's playing a big server. It's like penalty kicks. And that's not the kind of tennis he likes. Mika played some nice volleys today, but he must have had 10 - and 80 service winners.
Mika was so strong on serve today, especially on his 2nd serve, he took a lot of risks and hit very few DF, he knew he would need this shot today and he did it, so congrats to him.

In another interview he says that he's at least happy with his attitude today, Mika was hitting aces left and right and Gilles kept his composure, so that was a good point.

Fran, please shed some light here - I can't recall if there's any interviews/articles 'bout these two.I didn't mean anything in particular, sorry for the confusion. But the journalist used the word "tendresse" in French and that's really not the word which comes to my mind when I hear Gilles talk about Mika.

I like his answer and how he exposes the bias of this question. French journalists always are so insulting to big servers like Karlovic, accusing them of killing the game - but when Llodra is a serving machine, like he was yesterday, everybody is apparently supposed to go into raptures about it.

Truc

An interview he gave to the local newspaper before the start of the tournament:
http://www.leprogres.fr/fr/permalien/article.html?iurweb=2122590

Just a simplified translation since we already know most of the things he says:
- How is your knee?
Not worse than usual! There's not much I can do, I try to not think too much about it.
- Isn't it very frustrating to get injured after the terrific season you had in 2008?
Sure, but injuries are part of a tennis career. Everybody is having their own problems...
- Do you think it might be the consequence of your overloaded season last year?
Maybe, since my season was longer than I was used to. But the very best are able to cope with it. Up to me to improve in order to remain fit.
- You're still ranked at #12 despite of this injury. Are you proud of it?
Proud, I don't know. I play for myself, I have nothing to prove.... It just shows that I still had a good season, despite the injury and the confidence issues at one point. I improved in the Slams, especially because I took some time to rest before the start of the events... which might have harmed me too. But I haven't completely given up my hope to finish the season in the top 10. It will take a big run in Bercy.
- Would you say that you've improved in 2009?
Yes. On two points. First, my game forwards is much better than it used to be. I'm able to apply it in matches more often now. And I won matches in straight sets this year, which almost never happened to me when my strength and my weakness were to adapt to the level of my opponent, even to the bad ones!
- Were you surprised by your level of play in Asia?
No, not at all. I've been having a good feeling for 3 months already. But my knee hampered me a lot during the US tournaments.
- What are your expectations for the last part of the season?
I wanted to win a title. I've done it. My goal now isn't necessarily to play the Masters Cup, but to play well in Paris.
- And Lyon?
Lyon is a tournament I like, I've always improved here year after year. The surface is different this year and I'll try to go further this time. I'm in Lyon to win the title. I'm one of the few players who can still gain points at that stage.
- What will be your goal in 2010?
When you're in the top 10 or not far from it, you know you'll have to play well to progress. So the goal will be to win a Masters 1000 or a Slam.

First match of the day again huh , probably no livestream then? since the spanish crews are still sleeping at that time.

Good luck Gilles.

I was over at the ATP site looking at the stats. Gilles ranked 8th in the 2nd serve points won catagory . I'm a bit shocked, I always thought his 2nd serve is the weakest part of his game... I guess he defends his 2nd serve well. 51st on the 1st serve %, only 54% average. Anyhow, interesting stuffs over there, and expectedly, he's top 10 in saving BP as well as converting his BP. :)

I was watching a match from the end of last year and Gillou was #1 at winning matches from a set down

Allez Gilles! Enjoy the match folks! :)

He only says in L'Equipe that the surface is slow and the bouncing quite high, so they need to adjust, but he did it well.

And nothing to do with Valencia, but the main article is about Agassi and they quote his reaction to the whole story:
Always unpleasant when a guy who's been a tennis icon is telling you after the end of his career that he hated the game. Agassi played until the age of 35 telling us at the time that he was loving it. And now he says it was a load of hooey. I prefer a guy like Davydenko who sometimes admits that he finds his motivation in money. He, at least, is honest. When I heard about his drug story, I wasn't surprised. When I was told about Gasquet, I was staggered. I found it absolutely inconceivable. But not for Agassi.

Hi there, I hadn't seen you around here before. It seems that Gilles has a lot of thai fans, that's pretty cool.

He won the first set, hurrah! The stats are pretty funny and telling. One one hand, you have a guy who wins around 60% first serve (passing a mere 50%), 50% second, solid all around and especially on break points (and he has a lot to save!). On the other hand, a guy who wins 80%+ points on his first serve, gets 70% of them in, but is getting murdered on his second serve, and less solid on break points.

Apparently it pays to be the solid player, instead of the flashy guy who gets in trouble as soon as his first serve takes a break!

Of course I just have to write that for Gilles to become a serving machine.

Yes, Gillou has a shocking increasing number of Thai fan after his debut in Bangkok. Who can resist? ;) Hope he comes back to defend his title.
