Troicki leading 4-1 in the deciding set! I'm actually rooting for Viktor because i don't think Gilles can beat Jo in the final...

edit: Viktor is actually playing some amazing tennis so now i have no idea who would be an easier opponent for Gillou.

Will his ranking change after a title tomorrow? Ranking points earned is small.

MsTree
10-03-2009, 03:40 PM
He might gain a few points but so will Verdasco and Davydenko as they've both made their final too. Jo loses most as he went out in SF. Davydenko is the defending champion in Kuala Lumpur so if you want you can cheer on Verdasco :)
So no ranking gain, only title glory at stake :)

Here are the articles in L'Equipe yesterday ("Défis de thaï") and today ("Banco à Bangkok") - he is the only top 10 player to not have won a title yet this year:

Truc
10-04-2009, 07:10 AM
A summary, but it's not very interesting:

He talks again about how hard it will be to qualify for the WTF, but on the other hand, each event will bring him points, so the idea is to not think about the knee and give 100% everywhere. And win a title, of course. It's not really a surprise he hasn't won any yet as he wanted to focus more on big events this year and didn't play well in the small tournaments.
He says about the match against Korolev: "He was making zero errors at the beginning, but really zero! He was hitting the ball as hard as he could and it was always in. I'm happy because I needed to play a big match to beat him. It was tough physically..."
As for the SF, Melzer hadn't lost his serve once before the match. But Gilles was much more solid from the baseline, forced him to play more and more difficult shots and finally broke him in the 8th game of the final. A clean victory: "I had really suffered against Korolev in the QF, but this time I could feel that I was able to move him around and the match was much easier."
Then a little review of his season and his bad patch after a decent start. The 2 weeks of rest after the USO seem to have given him a new boost: "The knee issue still is the same, it can come back any time, but the break did me good". He jokes about the fact that he's the only top 10 player without a title yet and that he really needs to win today. About Troicki (he played him twice on clay and always beat him in straight sets): "It's a quite surprising guy who alternates the very good and the not so good things. He still is inconsistent. It certainly is an easier task to master than facing a Tsonga in final."

Hi, all!

I know I disappeared from here, so hi again! I'd been keeping a certain distance from tennis in general and pretty much just keeping an eye on my faves from afar. I knew it was just a matter of time for Gillou to get his head back together and adjust, and I'm very hopeful now! I really think he can keep it up.

He was on fire today, and I'm really liking the "new" serve. But what I really loved to see was the old confident Gilles back!

In L'Equipe today:

Truc
10-05-2009, 06:36 AM
A summary:

Maybe it's the De Bakker effect. His win over Gaël in the first DC match seems to have given everybody a boost: Jo with the 3 wins in DC, Gaël in Metz and now Gilles in Bangkok, becoming the 4th French player with the most titles in the open area (after Noah, Forget and Leconte, tied with Santoro). Obviously, the winner of Tokyo will be Richard Gasquet.
Against Troicki, who looks like a boxer and whose game doesn't lack punch either, Gilles was excellent from the baseline again and didn't seem to be hampered in any way by this sinew fissure which has been bothering him since May. It might heal, but not necessarily; it can get worse, but not necessarily either. So he keeps playing with it and was actually moving very well on the court this week.
Above all, he looked more and more serene yesterday after having been broken in a silly way at 4-4, although he was the one with the 3 first BP of the match. Then at 5-4 30-30, when Troicki only needed to hit two more big serves, Gilles hit a FH passing-shot DTL and a cross BH passing-shot, both "made in France", and won 10 out of the 12 remaining points in that set. At 3-2 in the 2nd set, he managed to do what he hadn't been able to do in the 1st set: he broke on an easy smash missed by Troicki - it was the "real matchpoint".
7-5 6-3 in 1h15, only one set lost this week, the satisfaction to have won at least a title for the 3rd year in a row and a lot of pleasure: "The key was the passing-shot which allowed me to come back at 5-5. Before that passing-shot I was feeling a bit more tense than the other days, I even got a tad panicky when I was broken. Afterwards, I knew that I was going to win."
During his speech he thanked Tulasne for all the hard work done during the past few months. Why? "My level had slowly gone down after my injury in Roland-Garros. The clay tournaments of July were very laborious, I had two really bad losses there (Zverev and Brands). We really went down to work in training then and everything came back. I don't know if I will play like that every week, but the week in Bangkok has been very good..."
If only the knee was at 100%... "But I was at 100% this week! And anyway, I won't complain it's unfair because this injury has helped me to put a lot of things into perspective. I know it can happen again, and I also know it allowed me to enjoy myself again on the court."

Wow! Well done Gillou! :D I'm quite surprised by that wee stat!

If only the knee was at 100%... "But I was at 100% this week! And anyway, I won't complain it's unfair because this injury has helped me to put a lot of things into perspective. I know it can happen again, and I also know it allowed me to enjoy myself again on the court."

That's what we want to hear!

If anyone's wondering why I'm having a go at Oranges on the thread in GM (I got sucked in, couldn't help it) it's because he and sunnysmydelite were hoping Jo would smash Andy Murray's face in with his racquet during their match in Montreal in the cheering thread on Jo's forum. (It wasn't put quite like that but that's how I've taken it) Just so you know!

I won't complain it's unfair because this injury has helped me to put a lot of things into perspective.

I have a suspicion that this injury, while hampering his performance physically, has also been doing some good on somehow keeping him focus on the task. So it has done him some good. Now that he has refocus himself, knee injury please goes away now ;). Only 5 more weeks to go, if I can just hope he can continue to compete without feeling the knee, that would be great. I'm not hopeful of London and frankly I rather he gets some rest sooner rather than later.

And thanks Fran, as usual, for doing all those translations for us.

I am a tennis blogger (Japanese language). When I was at US Open, his knee looked quite painful. I asked his coach whether Gillou could come to Japan. His answer was "We hope so.". I'm thrilled to see him at Japan Open and his continuing winning.

Gilles Simon is unfortunately a not-so-well- known player in Japan despite his wonderful tennis and personality. I'm a big of his and learned a lot about him from this Forum. I just finished my article, "Simon Festival" with a lot of video and information about Gillou. http://newyork.blog.tennis365.net

I'll continue to write about him and hope he'll go all the way to final.

Two of my friends went to Japan to work in the anime industry. They told me that although the literal translation for "ganbatte" is indeed "do your best", in many contexts the actual meaning is more like "none of my business, I won't help you, good luck!" in a very smiling way. :p

I am a professional Japanese writer, so I know Japanese a little more than foreigners. Ganbatte is nothing to do with "none of my business'' Ganbareh! is more for men's expression and Ganbatte! is for women. There are many different forms of expression in Japanese language, mens, womens, children, polite, respect, humble.... you name it. It's a quite difficult language to master all these forms.

You're deflecting, I wasn't talking about any grammatical technicality but precisely about the perception from a foreigner perspective. When they asked their manager for information and got answered merely "ganbatte", they genuinely perceived it as a "none of my business/not my problem" sort of response.

Well, that's always a possibility although both of them are pretty good at speaking Japanese which was a prerequisite for applying to their job. That situation was actually a frequent occurrence and they ended up thinking it was a sort of cultural double entendre, like a polite and positive way of denying a request.

And in L'Equipe today:

He had to save two BP in the first game, but from then on it was a demonstration of returns and passings and a rough time for Suzuki and his attacking game. "It wasn't easy because the difference with Bangkok is brutal. The court here is 5 times as fast as in Bangkok. The fastest court I've played on this year. I need time to adjust." And the problem is that it's been raining since Monday, so the only court available to practice is the Center Court.

I'm turning blue.
It is painful to watch. Literally painful, I was feeling almost sick during the last games of the 2nd set.

But there's still hope, he's already had more winners in the first 2 games of the 3rd set than he has in the first 2 sets together.

And a great *overhead* shot now! He's on fire.

I'm starting to hate Youzhny now, whenever I want him to win he never does and when i want him to lose he always wins :o

Despite the close scoreline, Youznhy was clearly the better player today imo.

I'm glad I didn't watch this. There's nothing worse than losing these really tight matches. I'm traumatized, because my favourites just love to do that to me.

But anyway, better for Gillou to have some time to rest before Shanghai.

well, thats the good part of it- he'll get some rest! i didnt really get my hopes up for this match so its not so bad! i wouldve wanted him to win but still..he said he didnt feel the court very well and youzhny apparently doesnt suit him!

At least he fought.

I sighed with disappointment with the crowd when Misha missed that third MP :tape: :p

I felt sick following the livescore :bigcry: Don't think any of his matches has affected me like that before ~ put me all wrong for the rest of the day!
It seemed a really tight match but I'm guessing that wasn't the case from your commentaries :(

It was a tight match, I mean, tight in a sense that it can go either way.

Misha played very well, and I think the fact that he has never lost to Gilles just makes him all the more confident and relax, and Gilles was tight and grumpy :p. I wanted Gilles to win more because I don't want him to become a pigeon, but oh well. He fought hard to the bitter end, and at least I don't think he has a mental block like PHM does against Misha . Well, as the other said, at least he gets to rest and get ready for Shanghai to defend his final points. And now that Murray is out, he gets a bye too. I'm glad that he had fought hard to hang in there in the Top 10 and that at least benefit him a little in the most important week in the year :).

:awww::hug: And I only got to see the very end,so I'm only guessing at the stress that people here felt watching, and like you following the LiveScore:sad:

But with every loss comes the learning process. Gilles will get a little time to rest and extra time before he begins Shanghai,so its not all bad.;)

Allez Gillou, and a big:hug:for all of us here.

Oh, now that I think about it, maybe he does have a mental block against Misha. I thought some of the moves he made were so wrong, so unlike him, as if he just unsure of what he was doing. But then, those S&V moves at MPs (3 of them) were pretty classic Gillou's play.

Obviously next time he faces Misha we're going to have to take more desperate actions. The Tennis Gods demand virgin sacrifice.
