Thanks for the interview, Fran.

Kolya is next. He will need all his legs, so hopefully he gets them both working tomorrow ;).

Andy Murray was slated to give an interview at 10:30 AM, but the interview did not start until 11:05 AM. This is a common occurrence as John Isner also arrived 25 minutes late to his interview (Gilles Simon arrived 10 minutes early)...Gilles' a punctual guy, I like that :)

Gilles Simon vs. Igor Andreev

This match intrigued me as both players are willing to rally. The first set was close with Gilles Simon winning the tiebreaker 7-5. In a surprise tactic, Simon moved to the net on set point and hit a winning volley. The 2nd set saw some dicey service games, but both players held and pushed to another tiebreaker. Andreev jumped to a 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker in part by slicing his backhand and taking pace off of the ball. Simon feeds off of pace, but generating his own pace led to uncharacteristic errors. Simon fought back to take a 6-5 lead and hold a match point. Andreev hit a big serve, big forehand combination to save match point. Inspired by new life, Andreev powered through the next two points and leveled the match 7-6 (5), 6-7 (6).

Watching the #9 and #27 players in the world from close range at 7-6, 6-7 was awesome. These two guys are among the 30 best practitioners of their vocation in the world, and I was sitting 15′ away as they went toe to toe. Andreev’s forehand was bothering Simon, but Gilles’ ability to change the direction of the ball by hitting his backhand up the line also bothered Andreev. Simon hits both his serve and ground strokes harder than he did when I watched him win Indianapolis in 2008. As a fan, this is all I could ask for because 2 excellent players were dead even after fighting for 26 games.

The third set showed me why Gilles Simon is in the top 10. Never once did he look discouraged after losing the 2nd set and failing to convert a match point. Instead, he converted 2 of 2 break points in the 3rd set and saved 3 of 3 break points he faced. The 3rd set was a one sided 6-1 conclusion that easily could have been another tight set if Simon had not converted 100% of the break points he earned while saving 100% of the break points he faced.

Interviews

I asked Gilles Simon about his mindset after losing the 2nd set despite holding a match point. Simon’s answer was great. “… I had the impression I was still about to win the match.” Simon may never win a major, but his tidy play and fighting attitude are things average players can emulate. After answering questions in English, Simon took 15 minutes of questions in French. My French is beyond poor, but it was nice to hear nonetheless.

Thanks for Mr. Journalist's insight. :)
Meanwhile, still waiting for tomorrow's OOP, it's 10pm ET already but they still haven't post it.

lalaland

Only 20 mins before thurs came that the OOP for thurs finally comes:

Gilles plays the 3rd match on Grandstand, and the 2nd match on Ct 3 for the double (the first match on Ct 3 starts at 3pm, I'm sure they will wait for him if he got stuck in the singles).
Double good luck tomorrow, Gilles!

Global warming these days...

Gilles plays the 3rd match on Grandstand, and the 2nd match on Ct 3 for the double (the first match on Ct 3 starts at 3pm, I'm sure they will wait for him if he got stuck in the singles).
That's really a poor OOP; his single and double match are basically scheduled at the same time.

OMG, Gilles & Jim won their double match :eek::eek::worship:
It will totally boost their confidence, they must feel unbeatable now.

Thanks for the article, lala. Nothing new in L'Equipe, they confirm the knee is worrying ("pas fameux fameux"), but he seems in a good state of mind otherwise.
After his first round already he just said he felt "ultra-motivated". If there wasn't this knee problem, Cincy would be a great opportunity because we've seen so many half-hearted performances since the beginning of the tournament, Gilles' determination kind of stands out.

I won't be there tonight (I'm going to the Athletics World Championships :woohoo: ), it would be great if somebody could record the livestream.

That's really a poor OOP; his single and double match are basically scheduled at the same time.

It's looking more and more like it now that the 1st match on Grandstand is going to distance after taking 2 hrs to finish the first 2 sets . So what happened if Gilles' not available for the double at call time? They won't be forfeited, will they?

Oh, did I mention they saved a mp in the superTB to win it? Super cool.

Unfortunately it's outside ESPN2's coverage window, as always.

The only matches I want to see are the only ones they never show. But I'm sure ESPN thinks that seeing Murray spank Benneteau or Federer spank Llegs (again) is more entertaining than two ubertalented headcases slugging it out. Oh well.

Truc
08-21-2009, 01:48 PM
I'm keeping my expectations low, two of their matches have been quite a pain to watch so far.

It looks like he pulled out of New Haven. And no Gilles&Jim at the USO either.

lalaland
08-21-2009, 06:17 PM
I'm so trying not to expect anything, but this is so winnable (and I probably jinx him for saying that). Nole is just, unpredictable, some matches he played really well and lost (Olympics SF and Rome SF) and some matches he played really poorly but won (against Fed in Spring and when he beat Gilles in Dubai). Well, I guess it has everything to do with who he won or lost against, but still. Ideally, they both decide to put on a show and play great eventhough no one can see it on TV , and then Gilles wins it ;).

I think Gilles knows he can beat Nole more than any other top 4, that's why he got nervous and choke at both the previous matches, unlike when he played Rafa or Fed, he just felt he has nothing to lose.

But anyhow, I hope for a good match and Gilles gets to play over the weekend.

And OMG, Julien is leading Murray a set and a break up , so who knows.

MsTree
08-21-2009, 06:28 PM

Benneteau's been playing really well today, and he ran Nole close (I forget where but within the last few months).

until I jinxed him and he lost 3 games in a roll to down a break now :o, sorry Benny.
It would be funny to see Muzza gets beaten by a LL since all the commentators here thinks Muzza is invincible on hardcourt. But then, I want to watch him plays Fed in the next round, and I like Muzza too. So go Muzza.

MsTree
08-21-2009, 06:44 PM
I want to see Andy win but I also want to see him forced to play his best tennis rather than coast through his matches so I'm quite enjoying this. They had a good match at Wimbledon 2006 too. Benneteau doesn't get enough love imo

lalaland
08-21-2009, 07:01 PM
I'm with you, I want to see someone pushes Muzza to give him a little scare, it's too boring to see him cruising all the time. I'm quite sure he will get to the SF now. I love Benny when he beat Roddick long time ago in some small events in US, way back when Roddick won all those MM US events that he can get to. Haven't watch him much lately though.

lalaland
08-21-2009, 07:14 PM
It looks like he pulled out of New Haven. And no Gilles&Jim at the USO either.

Seems like he did, per Pilot's blog:

Ninth-ranked Gilles Simon, who would have been the No. 2 seed in the men's draw, has pulled out. Haven't heard the official reason but you don't need to be a genius to figure it out. He reached the third round in Canada and is into the quarterfinals in Cincinnati.

We'll see if there are any other of these "I have played enough tennis so I am pulling out" withdrawals. The candidates to keep an eye on are Sam Querrey on the men's side (although he was eliminated from Cincinnati) and Samantha Stosur and Agnieszka Radwanska on the women's side. Stosur is still alive in singles and doubles in Toronto while Radwanska will play Maria Sharapova in singles tonight.

When I said I'm keeping my expectations low, I was referring to the quality of play, not the result. The Marseille match was a total pain to watch, it's the match of Gilles I dislike the most. I prefer to get ready for some ugly tennis.

Q. You didn't win, but you played quite well and you had a great tournament. How are you feeling going into the US Open? Are you ready to do some damage?
GILLES SIMON: I don't know. (Laughter.) I have some damage. I'm not ready to make some.
But no, it's good for me to reach the quarterfinal. It's the first time this year in the Masters Series. I lost too many times in the last 16, so it was better than the other ones.
I had a victory yesterday against Nikolay. He's never easy to defeat, so of course it's good for my confidence. After I hope that I will be able to play as usual, to run better than that. If my body let me play as I want, I think I can be hard to defeat, yes.

Q. There was a couple points near the end of the match where there was a couple dropshots that you didn't go after, and a couple wide shots that you kind of just let them go by. Were you feeling okay out there?
GILLES SIMON: No, because normally I play these points. No, I still have my problems. That was not a good day, because I felt that he was -- he had some problems to breathing on the court. He was also tired.
I wanted to make him run, but every time I tried to I had to run too. Finally it was too painful to play these points. I prefer to keep playing in two shots, two or three shots, one good serve sometimes, and after I hit the ball.
But I think it's not enough to defeat a player like him. He's too good, too consistent. It's not easy to win in two shots against Novak Djokovic.

Q. Was it because of the weather, or are you just getting exhausted from the tour?
GILLES SIMON: No, it's my knee. No, I'm never exhausted. You should know that.

Q. What is the injury?
GILLES SIMON: Still my knee. Still my problem from Roland Garros. I am playing with this for three months now. Sometimes it's okay and sometimes not. This week it was harder. Finally I reached the quarterfinal, but it was harder than the other tournaments. I'm not moving as usual.
Well, when I'm -- I think it's my strength to move, usually to play some shot, to bring all the balls. When I'm not playing this way, then I'm not Gilles Simon anymore.

Q. You've been in the top 10 for a little bit now, most of the year. How has it been in the last year to be in the top 10, to reach that goal?
GILLES SIMON: Well, it was nice. It was very good, because I wanted to improve. I started the year like 30, something like this, and finally I finished the year 7. So I was a little bit surprised myself.
But finally after the season I just saw that I defeated all the best players, so that was a good reason to be in the top 10. I defeated the three best players in the world.
Yeah, I reached the top 10 faster than I thought, but I'm not complaining.

Q. Is life as a player different when you're in the top 10? Have you noticed any differences being on the tour this year?
GILLES SIMON: No. What is different is that everybody are -- people and journalists always think that you have to win every match. When you defeat the best players one time, everybody think that you're gonna do it every time. It's not working that way. We know that all the players are very hard to defeat.
In the first months I didn't allow me to lose some match. Sometimes I said, No, you don't have to lose this kind of match. Finally I was not playing good anymore.
I think that after Roland Garros it was much more easier for me. I changed my point of view. When I just come -- when I get into the court, I just want to win my match. I don't matter about who's my opponent. I try to win every match.
So even when I'm not feeling good, as this week, finally I reached the quarterfinal and it's better.

Q. We missed you in Indianapolis last month. Is there a reason you didn't go back? Once you saw how the draw ended up and Andy not being there, do you wish you would have been there?
GILLES SIMON: Well, it's a strange year for me, because the five very good tournaments I played last year I couldn't defend to this year. First it was Casablanca just before Roland Garros. I didn't want to play the week before the slam.
Then Indianapolis. The reason is I didn't want to stay -- not that I don't like United States, but I didn't want to stay for seven weeks in a row here. So I wanted to come only for four tournaments in a row. That's long enough. That's why I didn't play.
Madrid I had to defend on clay finally this year because it's not indoor hardcourt anymore. I think I won't play Bucharest. And I couldn't defend in Toronto.
No, no, it was a very nice tournament, Indianapolis. I think I'm gonna play this tournament. I don't know if it's gonna be next year or in two years.
But, no, this year I prefer to -- even I have my problem with my knee, so I had to rest a little bit.

Q. Are you playing next week or just resting up for the Open?
GILLES SIMON: No, I rest. I pull out from New Haven. I hope I will be ready and a 100% for the US Open.

Q. Is the knee getting better?
GILLES SIMON: No, it's worse actually. It's worse, but next tournament is in ten days, so good time to rest.

In L'Equipe today:
Simon dur du genou
Toujours handicapé par son inflammation, le Français est dans le doute avant l’US Open.

GILLES SIMON NE SERA PAS à New Haven la semaine prochaine.

He pulled out of New Haven in last minute on Friday. "I didn't feel like playing there!" he jokes. And then he admits with a grimace: "No, of course not, it's because of the knee..."
The inflammation of the subpatellar sinew has been like a "millstone around his neck" since Roland-Garros. Tulasne said to the journalist during the week: "He's having a really hard time when the knee hurts". Against Djokovic on Friday, it was hurting. Too much. "And at the end I hurt myself even a bit more", Gilles adds, explaining the last part of the match when he was limiping on the court. "It was funny because 'Djoko' didn't seem to feel very well either. I was playing on one leg and he couldn't breathe anymore, it was getting weird. So I said to myself: 'Allez, just try, keep playing, you never know, anything can happen with a misunderstanding...'"
He's been wearing all the time anti-inflammatory patches which are starting to leave bad marks on his skin, as if it was burnt, and he had to resign himself to taking anti-inflammatories orally too since the middle of the week, "which never is a very good sign".
"'Flushing' will be tough, sure! Complete rest now! Nothing until next Wednesday. No tennis, nothing! And then we'll see. Luckily Chris (Ceccaldi, the FFT physio) is here with me and it can get a lot better after 4-5 days. It's just an inflammation, after all, it can go the same way as it started..."

And this article is pretty much the same, I'm only posting it because of the last part:

"New York ?

http://www.letemps.ch/Page/Uuid/bb6cb96e-8eff-11de-a027-4e118beec50f/US_Open_-_Gilles_Simon_le_genou_en_question

It's all about his knee, he doesn't want to use it as an excuse, though, that's why he doesn't like being asked about it all the time, etc.
Was it reasonable to play in doubles too in these circumstances? "The first match helped me because I wasn't having a very good feeling after my 2nd round on Tuesday and I felt much better during the doubles. The 2nd doubles match, on the other hand, didn't help for sure."
"But that one wasn't planned, I usually play only one match in doubles!"

As for the Nole match, I didn't find the first set that bad either. I thought at first it was better than their other matches. But it's really not a match I would rewatch or recommend because of the ugly 2nd set when Gilles wasn't running anymore.

De rien, and welcome around!

There are some news in L'Equipe today, he practiced yesterday 2 hours with Rodgeur and didn't feel any pain in the knee. Tulasne says he wasn't hampered in his movements and he didn't mention his knee after the training session. They had fun with Fed, so he's in good spirits.
He will increase the training load a bit today: one hour with Tulasne, one hour with Cilic and one hour with Safin.

I can only agree with that. I really hope Misha can get back to his real tennis and meet Davydenko in third round action. He plays well against Kolya. Last time was his R4 match at the Australian Open last year. My only concern is that Mathieu seems to have overcome his terrible loss to Misha in Davis Cup as he defeated Misha a couple of weeks ago.

What's so bad about Gilles' draw? :o

lalaland
08-28-2009, 04:35 AM
I just thought about it again and concluded that it's not that bad. For R3 to face a 17-24 seed, worse would be Berdych or Ferrer, could have been better if he got Blake ;). R4, there's no good draw, except maybe Kolya who he just beat, but any of the other top 7 are gonna be tough. So I think it's not perfect but it's decent. DP is in great form and some will probably pick him as a favorite to get to the final, so that's tough for Gillou. My wish for him is a QF appearance by beating DP and I will be really happy. But I try not to expect too much cos you never know what's gonna happen to his knee, hopefully no long matches for him at least in the first 2 rounds.

The entire draw is bottom heavy, which is not good. I think some of us here are just upset about the bad draw for their other faves, like the Ferrero fans of us probably don't want to see him clashes with Gillou in R3 .

Now all of them are down a break .

Juanqui finally get rid of his headband , I hated his headband look, he is so much more suited to short hair, his hair is great.

BTW, I really doubt that Rafa would ask to start on Wed. He said he comes here to win, so he's expecting 7 matches. With his knee's condition, I would think more days in between matches will be better to not overload the knee. I was expecting he will get Tue and Murray gets Wed, just because Rafa has seniority over Muzza. But oh well. Players probably don't fuzzed about the schedule as much as their fans do :p.

It's been a year and a half now, I thought she would have gotten over that. But I guess it's a really traumatizing experience. Poor girl.

It's nauseating for sure. When Bolleteri first came and gave a brief analysis, the guy said something like it's the best comments he heard in the past 2.5 days . I guess he just haven't heard anything else except his own talking. But then, there's 5 courts and most of them are quite bad, except maybe Virginia Wade, as least she didn't talk out of her ass like the others seem to do. This other guy in the morning commenting Chardy's match said Jeremy hadn't perform in slam, and he gave an example that Jeremy was given a WC to RG last year and only got to R16, only? R16 in a slam for a WC is an accomplishment, not everyone is like Goran.

Sky just showed a great little interview with Gilles. Always love listening to him speak English.

Good luck tonight Gilles!

I haven't found anything that works with atdhe but Replay Media Catcher gets most other streams and youtube etc.

Can someone give me an ETA on when Gillou might start? The US Open site is too much to load on dialup  I can't even watch the livescore :bigcry: and I've only half an hour's worth of battery left :there.isn't.even.an.emoticon.that.describes.how.I .feel: :(

I agree about Virginia Wade; I like her commentating and her english is so much more understandable than the others'. And we have the same opinion about Bartoli's shadow boxing and her other odd things. Can't ask for more. :D
