Yay, glad I ask. C'mon Gilles, now take the 3rd set quick, please?

WarriorA
08-12-2009, 08:25 PM
Although boring, I'm glad that he stuck with the mostly counter-punching game to get through this set. I'm sure that took a lot of patience on his part. Hopefully he'll test the waters in the third to see if he can be a bit more aggressive.

Allez Gilles :D :D

I don't have any commentary on my stream, so I haven't heard anything about on-court temperature.

The fans aren't profusely fanning themselves - so it seems like it's probably more humid than hot.

Falla called trainer, why? cramp?
oh well, Gilles better stay focus. just 2 games away. C'mon now.

but-it's-ok
08-12-2009, 08:50 PM
Now Falla is a little injured,he could be dangerous,he's gonna hit freely by the looks of the 1st point!

WarriorA

That sucks that Falla's hurt - but no sympathy Gillou  Make him run!

but-it's-ok
08-12-2009, 08:54 PM
Falla is taking the ball on with more urgency, and striking earlier, just as I thought he'd do.

He won. What a relief.:)

Now it's the big gun he will face, he needs to serve better. But well done to get thru this tough one.

simplet
08-12-2009, 09:22 PM
Pheww, he won that. I only saw the beginning of the first set and the end of the match, what a contrast!

Jo now. There was a time (at the beginning of the year) when I was upset when two musketeers had to face each other, because I wanted all of them to go as far as possible in the tournament. Now I'm just relieved that one of them is guaranteed to win another round. It's been a difficult year for french tennis fans...

sammy01
08-12-2009, 09:26 PM

Truc
08-13-2009, 06:57 AM
Tulasne said after the match that Gilles is having a problem against lefties lately. He tries too hard to avoid the FH of his opponent, doesn't play his backhand cross and gets confused. Tulasne had told him before the match to just forget about all that stuff and play normally.
Gilles says that Falla wasn't missing in the 1st set and was annoying him with his serve. He wasn't in a very conquering mood. It was still tough in the 2nd set since he was 0-30 down at 2-2 at one point. But he played 2 great points then, which liberated him.
He says he knows what he has to do against Jo, the question will be to execute it properly.

No mention of the serve or the heat.

WarriorA
08-13-2009, 12:27 PM
Thanks for the report Fran. I'm glad to hear that his issues were mostly Falla-specific.

Heck, I wouldn't mention the serve either and pretend like it didn't happen.

The left/right issue is funny to me because I have that problem too; Thus, I empathize with him. Heck, I'm sure my problem is much greater though because I have trouble following left/right directions unless someone points along with it.

lalaland
08-13-2009, 08:53 PM
Thanks for the report, Fran.

I didn't even notice Falla is lefthanded :o , my stream was so choppy it seems I only get to see them walking around between pts and changeovers. Hopefully, today's stream will be better than that.

Jo is playing very well, he's running away with this, leading 3-0 now. I don't know what Gilles can do, maybe keep the ball deep and the rally longer so Jo don't get to dictate all the play? But Gilles looking very frustrated. Jo won 18/26 at net.

He is still #9 when the new ranking comes out next monday. Montreal and Cincy's pts are already off in July, this week the olympic pts came off (-100). Anyway, he lost 10 pts this week and no one gets enough to past him.

Au Revoir Montreal, bring on Cincy.

There is a bit of his video interview on http://www.cyberpresse.ca/sports/tennis/ on the right side, I don't know how to give the direct link of the video.
He says Jo is a good server, but he really was serving particularly well yesterday. 80% 1st serves, it felt for Gilles like he never had a chance to return a 2nd serve. Each serve was like a penalty kick, each rallye was beginning with "a thing coming at 210-220 km/h. Tirelessly, again and again, without slackening the pace once". Jo never started a game giving him a few 2nd serves to return. "And yet I thought I was returning well".

Then he can only gain points in Cincy. Hope he makes Top 8 seeds for the US Open.

He has to get to the QF to start gaining pts. If Kolya so much as win 1 match in Cincy, Gilles will have to get to the Final to past him. So 8th seed is possible but unlikely. But then, I'm hoping too, you never know. I wonder when's Cincy's draw coming out.

Thanks for the interview link, Fran.

lalaland
08-14-2009, 10:42 PM
Cincy draw came out:

He faces Wayne Odesnik 1st round, and then Kiefer/Andreev 2nd. R3 seed for his section is Davydenko and he is in Nole's QF. So if he gets to R3, beat Kolya and then proceeds to the Final, then he will past Kolya, that's the scenario anyway. Good luck in Cincy, Gilles.

Yes I recorded it from Sky (it worked!!!) and the file isn't too huge - I've yet to cut out the ads though and re-encode it but I was going to treat it as a learning process... I would only have eyes for Gillou though so it doesn't really matter what Odesnik was like! lol
There was a cute interview at the end with Gillou, he sounds so sweet when he speaks English!

Fran, if you've got the match ready to upload, maybe you could do that and I'll wrestle the technology to get the interview at the end :hearts:

Andreev must be developping a mental block against Gilles, it was the same story in Madrid, each time he had a chance to close it out he was missing shots with the court wide open.
Or does he do that against a lot of players? I don't like his game, so I don't watch him very often.

Gilles' comments about his knee:
http://www.sport24.com/tennis/atp/actualites/simon-a-souffert-289814/
«Je ne pouvais pas bouger exactement comme je l'entendais, j'avais l'impression que je le tenais bien en fin de deuxième set mais j'ai un peu lâché à un moment et ça m'a mis les boules. Il y a certains points où je ne peux pas me battre comme j'aime me battre.»
"I couldn't move exactly the way I wanted to, I had the impression that I had him in control at the end of the 2nd set, but I gave way a little bit and it drove me crazy. On some points I can't fight like I'd like to."

Truc
08-19-2009, 12:22 PM
Q. Is your knee a 100%? I noticed tape on it. Is it fine?
GILLES SIMON: 100%, no, but just trying my best anyway. I have to play these tournaments, so I feel like I'm able to play. I don't know, I just try to do my best on the court. And when I feel that I have a chance to win, like today, I just give the maximum.

Q. How do you feel about Davydenko or Kunitsyn?
GILLES SIMON: Well, it's two different players. Nikolay is playing really fast, as usual. I will need all my legs if I want to win against him. We played three times each other. Every time it was really hard match. I won twice and I lost one. But it was a good fight, so for sure I will have to be 100% if I want to defeat him.
Igor Kunitsyn is different. I played him only a single time in Nottingham on grass, so it's really different. I know he's playing from the baseline also, so anyway I expect a hard match. But I don't know against who.

Q. You've got a reputation as being one of the more mentally tough players on the tour. Did that help at all at the end of the second set? You had a match point, and he pulled the set out. Didn't seem to bother you. How were you able to move on?
GILLES SIMON: Well, the thing is, when you're a tennis player, each match is really hard to win. Sometimes you lose. You just do the maximum on the court and your opponent is just better than you and then you lose. So when I feel that I have the chance to win, I just want to play this chance 100% every time.
So today, even if I lost the second set, it was hard because I was not moving very good. I had the match point, so it's always hard. But I had the impression that I was still about to win the match, so I tried to forget everything and just to focus on that.

Q. How do you feel about the way you're playing in general? I think last summer you were one of the best players on the tour going into the US Open. Has it been more of a struggle this summer?
GILLES SIMON: The thing is, I think I'm -- actually, I'm playing good. I practiced a lot this times, but I have also some frustration on the court because I just can't do what I want. Just can't run as usual. It's not easy for me, because I like to fight. I like to feel that it's gonna be hard for my opponent to win every point. That's not the way I'm playing, actually.
So I'm playing good. I play sometimes beautiful shots. I feel like today I did a good match, because every time I had a chance to do something good in the first to break him, I did it.
But still, I think it could be a little bit easier.
