OMG, what a goddamn joke this Simon :haha:

Pleeeeaaaasse let it be end of the year soon, then this mug will be where he is supposed to be, around # 25. My god, what a shame for the top ten this guy is...

Well done Mischa to bounce the pusher out.

Thank god this is around the time the pusher's big points from last year start coming up and he can finally drop out of the top 10.

Simon looked like a helpless balbasher at the biggining when I was watching. Zverev seems to have the right tactic (extreme pushing) against Simon.

expected win, as Simon is a total mug this year

Here is where the slide starts for Simon. I hope he enjoyed his brief spell in the top 10.

Yup - Ljubo showed the way at Indian Wells. It really annoys the hell out of Simon ...... now he knows what it feels like :-)

Good discipline from Zverev to stick to the battleplan though. He's never going to be an outright natural on clay so that won't have been easy (although the higher temperatures today probably made things a bit more comfortable for him, made it more similar to Rome).

Well done by Zorro.

Gilles better find his form on hard courts. Unless the knee is still troubling him I don't know why the hell he isn't following his schedule from last year.

Thank god this is around the time the pusher's big points from last year start coming up and he can finally drop out of the top 10.

I definitley think that Simon's ranking is higher than he as a player should have reached. However, one of the main reasons that he's not done well this year (and, considering his considerably easier draws due to ranking, he has not done well) is that he seems to think that he needs to smash past players now he's in the top 10. I never believed Simon to be an out and out pusher like he was said to be on mtf but he certainly didn't go for most shots. All too often this year he's been going for his shots and he can't do that.

Serve-volley tennis beats pushing. :D

Couldn't agree more.

Chakvetadze-itis.

When will players that know how to move the ball around ever learn they don't need to bash.

That said, Zverev does have the kind of pace-varying game to beat/trouble Gilles. Chinaski's right that the slice messes Gilles up.

Gilles has sucked on clay this year. It seems like his worst surface. Knee aside, I don't understand why he's returned to it.

Unless the knee is still troubling him I don't know why the hell he isn't following his schedule from last year. His schedule from last year was actually the exception because of the Olympics. He's always played the European clay events in the summer, he even plays Bucharest after the US Open every year. I know MTF has decided he sucks on this surface, but clay is his favourite surface. Check his ATP profile.

He sucks on all surfaces this year, he was playing horrible tennis too in Marseille, Dubai, Ostrava, IW...

zverev use his slice much? simon can't play it gnerallyIt's true Simon hates it (that's why I didn't get at all Petzschner's tactics in the 1st round!), but Zverev wasn't even slicing that much imo, just pushing, really.

His clay results this year have been the worst, though. On hard courts and grass he's played at or close to his ranking from time to time.

I know Olympics changed things up, and I know that he's done well at post-French clay events, especially last year. But unless his knee is bugging him I don't see the value of returning to clay before the USO. It just seemed like playing let alone winning Indianapolis gave him a considerable head start last year.

I'm sure there are valid reasons though.

That's the word of Zverev's game. Because he serves and volleys his not considered a pusher. Most of his matches that I've seen was him putting to ball back deep and standing way back near the lines people. If thats not pushing then what is  Simon can ballbash like Berdych and still be called a pusher

Did you watch it, Zverev was all in defense pushing Simon to do the UEs... Simon lost it after all the break opportunities he missed

how did this happen? I'm not a Simon fan but he's not supposed to lose against a guy who isn't even called to play singles for his DC team

He should feast on guys like him, but something on him isn't clicking the way it did last year

I've been saying that for nearly a year. Zverev on anything except grass is the biggest pusher around.

+ Simon is in very bad shape this year, while Zverev is having really solid season (for his standards of course, but hey, he reached top50)
why da fuck so many people call this result as a shocking surprise?

No surprise at all. These two know each other very well, practiced alot together. Its always been the case that Simon struggles to play as the aggressor, so Zverev got his tactics spot on. He has two decisive victories over Gilles now, he's obviously doing something right.
