August 3-9, Washington, D.C., U.S.A.

Rogers Cup
August 10-16, Montreal, Canada

Western & Southern Financial Group Masters
August 17-23, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A.

U.S. Open

Bet365 will show Washington (or so it seems) for those who are interested. It begins at 22H00, french hour.

@Keijian: I feel for you. Watching tennis in france without sport+ is tough (watching public tennis is tough in france). Do you have Canal + for the grand slams ?

Keijan
08-05-2009, 02:54 PM
Thanks! I have Canal+ and Canal+ sport, which I both bought in hope of seeing more tennis (the only problem being that I also got to hear more Forget :p) But they only show the slams and the semi finals or finals of some tournaments, sport+ getting to show all the rest :o And of course this channel only comes with a hundred of others and you have to pay again and again, so I chose bet365.

There is tennis sometimes on paris première or direct 8 too, but it's extremely rare. Not to mention the public channels, or Eurosport which only shows WTA ! The french coverage majorly sucks, but I'm moving to Spain next month, it should be better with the wonderful TVE

Disappointing, but I think not that surprising in the end. He always got trouble with big servers and it's a come back tournament, he needs to find his pace. Not to mention that he already has two ATP 250 in the pocket for this year, so it's not like he badly needs another good result in a 250. I think Montreal will be another story ;)

MacArthur

He plays the winner of Schuettler/serra in the second round and Gilles in the next one (if it goes well for the two of them). Then it's Federer.

I honestly don't know what we should expect of this tournament : just one win or at least a quarter final ?

MacArthur

Gael screaming Jo's name behind the door :haha:

He confirms his difficulties with the big servers by the way. Maybe a way to work on his concentration.

http://www.cyberpresse.ca/sports/tennis/200908/08/01-890859-jo-wilfried-tsonga-veut-seduire-le-public-montrealais.php

I had to look up the word "tuque". He wears a wool bonnet in the middle of the summer?! Or is my dictionary wrong?
He says he loves Montreal, it's a very 'warm' place, it feels like at home, except for the accent which makes him laugh. He often plays better when he feels the support of the crowd. He doesn't know yet if the Montreal crowd will support him, but he will try to show some nice tennis to deserve their support.
Then some talk about the Tsonga-Simon-Monfils generation. Jo says the French system is very efficient because they're "recruited" at a very young age already. And from all the social classes, it's possible to play tennis even if you're not rich.
And as an illustration, his press conference is disturbed by Gaël screaming his name behind the door.
Etc.

Yes, he does wear such a hat, as I saw him leaving the Washington site wearing it after his loss to Isner. He was headed straight for the exit with his head down. Bonnet is not a word an American would use, but it's exactly right! It's sort of a jamaican-type/Scottish tam/beret/bonnet thingy!

Some line of reaction from Fed and from Jo on this match to come :

Fed :

I am excited at the sight of this match. Jo is still young and he's got lots of potentials. It's certainly going to be an exciting match to watch and also to play. He has an extremely powerful serve and he is a great athlete. I've played him only once in my career and I guess that it's going to happen again in the future. I am aware that it's going to be a very difficult match.

Jo:

Tsonga said that he doesn't want to be there to sparr. "I can play tennis too, did he say without any trace of arrogance. I am not as good as him when he is at the top, but I am able to play too."

Awesome match to come

Thanks for the work of your pen, Krystlel. Great article and great analysis. Much appreciated.

Jo has a good draw at cincinati. A seemingly easy win on Nadal would be perfect for their H2H, even if it's a long shot, that I can concur.
I think that Cincy is now more an affair of making the most possible points for the rankings, rather than preparing for the US open. He has had enough confidence with the Federer match.

The murray's loss doesn't seem as a big deal for me. Jo is always much more dangerous in slam, and in three sets paticularly. I predict a very different outcome if a rematch happens between the two at the USO.

Allez Jo at cincy

YOU BEAT THE WORLD NO 1 JO!!!! :yippee: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

This is late from me, but Jo's win against Federer was the highlight of last week for me. At 1-5 down in the 3rd set, I thought I should go to sleep but the masochist part of me wanted to see out match to the bitter end - at that point, Federer only had to put the final nail in the coffin. The end result had me totally stunned, exhilarated and above all, bursting with pride for him. He practically rose like a phoenix from the ashes. :worship: This is the kind of heart and passion I love to see in him, hopefully he will learn to fend off the hang-dog mentality when he's down.

As for the match against Murray, that was tight, and it really should have gone to a deciding set. But overall, Jo's performances in Montreal show encouraging signs of better things to come. The Cincinnati draw looks promising... good luck!!!

First round match against Guccione rather than Kohli. I'm actually a little worried now, he's a big serving lefty and Jo's really not had great results against the big servers of late. Crappy match.
Jo missed 3 BPs early in set 1. He served okay, but Gucci's return game was nothing to talk about. Jo's tactic was to serve to Gucci's backhand which was terrible. TB was on serve till 10-all, Jo had a few half chances, but his serve was untroubled. Then Jo hit a great forehand return that dipped low. Serving for the set, he got too passive with a backhand pass and Gucci was back in. He served bombs and Jo's wiiiiiild forehand made an appearance to help lose the TB 12-14.

2nd set was total implosion. Gucci got away with serving around 40%. I really hope Eric smacks Jo in the head a few times.

Still, he has shown us, from his performances in Montreal, of what he's capable of. He's a great athlete, a fantastic shotmaker and as long as he maintains his self-belief, he will be a dangerous contender at the US Open.

This is a pretty good draw for Jo.

His first round opponent, American Wildcard Chase Buchanan is currently ranked 914. He was born on 4-6-1991, which makes him barely 18 (and which makes me realize that kids born in the nineties are becoming adults!!!). According to the ATP website he plays mostly futures. Jo should win in straight sets.

Possible second round opponent Jarkko Nieminen is one of the guys I like on tour. He is 28 and a lefty. He had been injured for three months and recently started playing again in New Haven but lost in the first round. His H-H with Jo is 1-1. Both matches were on hard court and in Australia. There is also a w/o:
2009 Sydney Hard Q Nieminen, Jarkko W/O
2009 Brisbane Hard R16 Tsonga, Jo-Wilfried0-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(5)
2008 Adelaide Hard S Nieminen, Jarkko 6-2, 6-4
Jo should win in straight sets if he faces Jarkko.

The other possible 2nd round opponent, the Italian Fabio Fognini usually does better on clay so I don't think Jo will get in any trouble. Their H-H is 0-0 according to the ATP website.

Yeah, what's up with all those frenchies in the same quarter? By the way, I feel for Gasquet, the guy can't get a break.

Turquoise
08-28-2009, 12:18 PM
The draw is not easy but not that hard either. If Jo maintains his confidence and works to his strengths, there's no reason why he shouldn't go far. I think the first stumbling block will be Gonzalez in the 4th round, and then the real fun starts with Nadal, then Murray... if he can go up one notch at a time.

Although I am critical at times, I love Jo's offensive and exciting game style. I'd like him to keep his head up when he's pushed back against the wall and just fight for every point - he did that against Federer in Montreal and look what happened. All the best of luck Jo. I believe in you, just do it.

Boris Sobkin (Youzhny's coach) blogging for one of russian site. He wrote about training session and I do not like somethin he said about Jo - very rough translation:
Before our training Tsonga was on court, I saw it. He trained with David Ferrer, and he looked pallid. After all they sat with his coach ans had a very long discussion. Seems like something wrong with his game. But it is just a training, we cannot judge by it. I think Benneteau is very dangerous, he is on the run. He can spoil Tsonga's party.

Benneteau has done it before :(
I hope Jo's got his game together. I don't think I can settle for anything short of a 4th round appearance, plus I really want him to play Fernando Gonzalez. Could be an awesome match.

fabio fognini

Tsonga has a great draw guys :)
1st round should be easy, Chase Buchanan isn't going to trouble Tsonga.
2nd round Fognini/Niemenen. Would be surprising if either player beat Tsonga. Fognini would have to be at his best to give him a game.
3rd round possibly Triocki but he has injury problems pulling out of 3 of his last 4 matches.
4th round Gonzalez/Berdych, Apparently Gonzalez has tendonitis in his knee so maybe Tsonga will play Berdych. It's a difficult match never quite know how Berdych will play.
Quarter Finals Probably going to face Nadal. Difficult match but we've seen Jo can beat Nadal if he plays his best tennis.
Semi Finals Murray. Tough match up, possibly relying on Del Potro to beat up Murray a bit in the quarters, so Tsonga can finish off what ever is left of Murray/ Del Potro.
Final, he will probably face Federer. Jo was the last person to beat Federer, but beating him in a grand slam final is totally different as Murray found out last year.

Nieminen turn now. Always a tough customer for Jo, but he is coming back from injury, so a solid match should suffice. At least I hope

Funny how quick the memories of Guccione fade xD

Nice to see an easy win for Jo today; it seems it takes him a match to get into a tournament of late, so I'm glad he's got this under his belt. He really should make it to the 4th at least, I just hope he plays good tennis.

Nice match so far, both guys are playing pretty good tennis. Jo's had the upper hand so far, still no bp's though.

Also, the commentators are idiots.

They've had things with that guy a couple of times, there was one for Gael during his match with Chardy.

I was head in hands when they suggested Jo could look to the Williams sisters when it comes to getting to the net and dealing with the ball .___.

Bashak
09-04-2009, 05:25 PM
I know, they had way too long discussions about wta and if I'm not mistaken they drew parallels to football(??). They also completely forgot to mention Jarkko is coming back from an injury in the first set. I guess they did a little googling and mentioned it in the second.

Nice job, Jo :yeah: Nieminen is always enjoyable to watch playing imo, his backhand is something when it gets past the net. The first set was interesting as soon as Jo decided to try to break his serve, but the other two weren't holding much suspense.
So who's next ?

MacArthur
09-04-2009, 06:27 PM
It looks good for Benny right now against Troicki.

Great match from Jo. The third set went a little less smoothly, but the two first sets were great statistically speaking : 18 winners against 7 UEs in the second, 58% of first serve with 90% of success... and Jarko was doing his match with only two Ues in the second.

It annonces great things to come I think :)

Bashak
09-04-2009, 07:08 PM
Benneteau defeated Troicki 61 36 61 60. I didn't watch the match but -wow- impressive scoreline. So it will be an all-French 3rd Round match.
Benneteau is 27 years old and currently ranked 43rd. His highest ranking was 35 and 2 years ago. His best result this year is the final in Kitzbuhel as a LL!!! He also reached the QF in Cincinnati a few weeks ago.

Their H-H is 2-2 on the ATP circuit, with the only hard-court match won by Benneteau:
2009 Roland Garros, Clay, R128 Tsonga 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4
2008 Lyon, Carpet, S Benneteau 7-6(4), 7-5
2008 ATP Masters Series Miami, Hard, R32 Benneteau 6-3, 6-3
2007 Wimbledon, Grass, R128 Tsonga 7-6(4), 7-5, 6-4

I don't know how Benneteau is playing, I'm assuming well because of the recent QF in Cincinnati. But I belive Jo should win in 4 max.

^ pretty much; Jo decided not to close all the way to the net and take a low volley, instead letting it bounce and then hitting a winner off the following forehand. The commentator started criticising Jo for it (as if he doesn't take a lot of volleys anyway ><) and saying that he should be doing like the Williams sisters would and not letting it bounce ¬__¬

I'd like to repeat, they were idiots :/

Juju has had some good results of late, I'd much rather have seen Jo play Troicki, but hey, I think he'll win anyway ^^

Nice win, time to step it up and KO Gonzo

Bashak
09-06-2009, 11:10 PM
Jo will play Fernando Gonzalez of Chile next.
Gonzo is currently ranked 11 and he's one of my favorite players. He is 29 years old. I think he has been top 20 for five years now and he was as high as number 5. I was looking forward to this match. I really hope it will be a forehand-fest, if not forehand-porn.
Their H-H is 0-0.

I watched Gonzo against Berdych, and I am afraid he is looking good. His serve is huge, he can hit accelerating back to back forehands, it's scary. He retired once coming to the US Open but I see no injury what-so-ever. He is also an amazing fighter. All that said, Jo's got all these qualities too and he should be able to find a way to beat him in however many sets it takes. However, it will be difficult.

lisaplenske
09-06-2009, 11:22 PM
yeah jo:D great win and in straight.

Gonzalez is very good and what worries me the most is his heavy forehand that I m sure he will target on jo backhand :(
I think jo must play very smart and make the chilean move on his forehand side and come to the net quite often in order to disturbe his solid game
He really has to serve well

allez jo!you can!

I shouldn't have thought it'd overlap with Nadal/Monfils, it's still technically a day session match right? It might cross timeslots with Serena/Pennetta slightly though

Yes, I think you're right. Nadal should be playing later. Still, this probably means Serena will overlap and be on tv - which I don't mind but she better not take her time. I like Flavia too but I really want to see Kim vs Serena
