Unfortunate. Hope that wrist injury isn't any more serious other than needing some extra time off.

Watch the Haas band Wagon gain steam only for Tommy to tank against some grass mug in the early 4 days. Or get an injury himself too. Overrated punk!

Hard luck on Monfils, but I'm delighted Haas has got his well deserved seeding. I hope he justifies it and reaches at least the R32.

Too bad Monfils couldn't play at Wimbledon. Now Boredo may pass him in the rankings. They should of gave Haas a seed before Monfils retired

Why Haas

What do you mean? He was next according to ranking and has a ton of points on grass compared to some above him, so he'll jump quite a few places on the seed list.

Nadal losing to Hewitt in exhos and not being able to bend knees and Monfils out. Gu, you must be in hog heaven. I'd say all you need is Gilles being injured for a trifecta, but he's playing so lousy lately no injury required.

I think his grass record is much better than the 8 player now behinf him (won halle, 3rd, 4th round at Wimbledon)
Lucky for him he didn't ended 25th

That's right....I think the most dangerous player that he may face now is Gonzalez.

bad decision, Tursunov would have been more deserving to climb up to 24
plus being seeded at all would have been positive anyway for Haas

Yes they can. The way Wimbledon seeds are calculated has been explained several times.

Ad Wim

I know, but why wasn't he seeded in the first place then?!

orangehat
06-19-2009, 07:54 AM
Changes to the seeds are only made if you are in the top 32 in the first place. Haas was 33th to be seeded (hence it didn't matter even if he had won wimbledon last year, he still won't be seeded). When Monfils withdrew, Haas moved up to 32, eligible to be seeded and have his seeding rearranged w.r.t his grass results, which then moved him up to 24.

Thanks for the info, but what a crazy way of doing things. Haas was around 74th on the entry list. What made them move him to 33rd? Is it sort of a reserve list for seedings if anyone pulls out? Then again, it's still crazy and so unfair that Haas moves to 24th then.

And if the rule is top 32 seeded and then calculate the grass results to make seedings, isn't it then very unfair that if someone of those 32 pulls out, not the 33rd comes in but the 74th?
If you decide to seed against the ranking and want to apply your own rules, do it properly and just make you own seedings, not looking at the ranking, like they did back in the days.

Entry lists are taken 6 weeks before i believe, but the actual rankings (before they seed) are the previous week's rankings. Well I'd rather have a crazy system than a boring one (as long as you don't get Roddick being seeded 1st on Clay or something like that)

entry list was done ages ago - hence it rightly has no bearing on seedings. haas was "33rd seed", but now he is in the top 32 seeds, he is eligible to have his grass perfomance taken into account. yes it's a bit odd but deal with it.

Thanks again, I see Haas is 35 on the ranking now, so that makes more sense.

Still, I think it is a crazy system, because why not take everyones grass court results into account so that people like Montanes and Andreev aren't seeded anymore.

But you're right, that's Wimbledon and they're known to be stupid. Like, even when there is a lot of rain all fortnight, not playing on the mid Sunday or keep starting play at 11AM instead of earlier.

Actually if I got it right he's now at #24 because someone(Monfils) from the top1-24 withdrew. If someone withdrew from the top25-32 Tommy would have been #25....

06-19-2009, 08:55 AM
No, surely that would be ridiculous. In that system if Nadal withdraws, you are saying Tommy would be in at seed 1. . .

I'm sure somebody said it before: The top 32 on the Monday before the tournament are the seeds; THEN they are rearranged taking into account grass records. If somebody just misses because although their grass results are good, the others aren't good enough for them to be in the top 32, then hard lines, a line has to be drawn somewhere.

Tommy was ranked 35 on Monday, 3 people ahead of him are out (Nalby, Gasquet and Monfils) which brings him into the top 32 and his grass record is taken into account. It is that grass record that brings him in at 24.

when I said that he would be seeded as #1 ? I clearly said if anyone from the top1-24 withdraw he'll be still at #24..So Monfils was from the top1-24 and Tommy is #24,as you can see he didn't replace Monfils seed..
