Murray struggles to

beat other top 3 players in a best of five match i.e the slams. In fact the one time he managed to do so was against a TIRED Nadal and it took him 2 days. His fitness was so poor that he lost the final to an inferior Federer. Unless Murray ups his fitness, he is never going to win a slam. Discuss.

His fitness/shape can't be that bad, look at that huge biceps of his

By my reckoning he's only played Federer once in a slam, in the US Open final, and Nadal 3 times, the one he won in the US Open (which took 2 days because of rain), once at Wimbledon where he got hammered, and once in Australia way back in 2007.

Hardly a lot to go on at this point.

What made you think Fed was inferior in that final? I may be biased, but I thought Fed played some of his best tennis of 2008 in the latter stages of USO (SF and F).

Djokovic's record is even worse, why not open a thread devoted to him as well.

He has only faced 2 of the other members of the top 4 in a GS since he matured (post Wimbledon last year). He won one against Nadal and lost one against Federer. That hardly constitutes a struggle.

But then again, Nadal was tired. He's always tired. Come to think of it, any time Murray beats a top player it's due to fatigue. It was Nole in Cinci 08 and Miami 09, Fed in Cinci 06, Rafa at USO 08, Del Potro at USO 08 and Miami 09.

These guys really need to work on their fitness, I think.

Muzza is probably one of the fittest on tour?

Yes, it took him two days to beat Nadal...which was why he wasn't 100% going into that US Open final with Federer.

Honestly his fitness is okay at the moment. He is probably the fastest of the top 4 right now. His problem is him wanting to run around his backhand to hit a forehand when his backhand is a lot better and being hesitant on too many occasions, not to mention his mental fortitude in big matches. Sure, he did win Queen's yesterday but at Wimbledon I predict another loss around the quarters again.

It depends on what mood he's in. A lot of the time he is the Ice Man to my Maverick, though.

He can be my wingman anytime.

Like Tarantino said once, that quote proves Top Gun is gay movie...
Back on topic, mental fatigue, "slam is a different animal" pressure...well we'll see how he deals with it on Wimbledon in 2 weeks. I think he may have some problems with slams, but it's too early to make some sort of a pattern. Expected from him to win USO last year but he faltered in final...it was an upset imo from a point of current form of both Murray and Federer...He was labeled as "clear favorite" in AO and failed again pretty early. You can't take anything from RG, it is his weakest surface. If he doesn't win Wimbledon or USO this year pressure will only start to grow. British press will be all over him after Wimbledon...Interesting slam is ahead of us, interesting summer with USO at it's end. It has been years since we had something like that, looking forward to it.

From being one of the weakest in terms of fitness, I am sure Murray is now one of the strongest, and well able to go 5 sets when required. We shall see.

There might be a case for this point of view if he'd faded at the end of a long match, but he got destroyed from the outset. If playing two sets on consecutive days renders him unable to compete on the third day, how does he survive the regular tour schedule?

andys game is effective but he is still a grinder-retriever that lacks offense. and it matters. sooner or later a player has to take matters into his own hands, and stop relying on other players mistakes, cause there might not be much.

good thing for him is that it takes less mental effort to sustain that sort of game in the long run (opposite case of djoker), but its still fairly 1d...
