The top seed this week in Lugano Challenger, Stanislas Wawrinka, is #18 in the ATP rankings, and the second seed is #99. This is kind of crazy, especially since he could've played Halle or Queens. Why does a player decide to do this?

Maybe he just wanted to and would make more points there than he would losing a 1st round at Halle or 2nd at Queens.
It's not like Wawrinka really likes the grass.

Stan is playing a challenger? He should try to improve on grass instead of going down the easy road... anyway, good luck to him!

Lugano = Swiss city
Wawrinka = Swiss player
This year Wawrinka's playing, maybe next year a few more play. This might be his way of promoting tennis in the country. He also played at Gstaad last year after Wimbledon.

Big fish - small pond, small fish - big pond?
Up to the individual player.

Gstaad is not a challenger (points and prize money). Did Stan play Lugano CH before?

Terrible decision by Wawamug to play this joke of an event...

The lake is nice there.
I guess Stan just gave up on the grass...
